Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Organ Music Anything like a complete history of the rise and de velopment of organ music would require a far larger book than this, and would probably extend to several volumes, to say nothing Of a collection of examples of the various schools and epochs, which would be necessary. The reader must therefore expect to find nothing more than an outline of the subject, in which a few of the works of some of the leading representa tives are briefly described. The new material in Parts I and II comprises the development of the Pneumatic and Electric Actions, with drawings from Key to Pallet, and, as far as possible, the latest inventions have been described. In Part III little has been done except the grouping of 4-foot and 2-foot stops under the correct heading of Foundation stops, and, where stops are known by two different names, the old and the new terms are given for completeness. A list of stops for the Solo and Echo or Celestial Organs, with the character of tone of each stop, together with a complete list of Couplers to be found on Modern Organs, have been added. The section Hints on Organ Accompaniment for the church service is not intended to be a complete guide to this important subject, but to serve merely as an introduction to a fascinating and almost endless study. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Organ as Musical Medium IT IS gratifying to witness the tremendous growth of interest in the organ since World War II, not only as an instrument of the church but also as an artistic musical medium. The paths to historical or gans throughout Europe have become crowded with curious young musicians eager to seek an instrument which will justify the musical demands of its great literature. We have seen how the modern organ as it emerged in the early years of the 20th century dan gerously forsook its heritage. It all but lost its shape and sound, and its muddy tones turned away many gifted students who hast ened to seek out a more sympathetic musical medium to fulfill their urge for expression. Happily, this era is fast passing on, and the organ is regaining its former artistic stature. Organists and students everywhere will be grateful for this vol ume, which is one of the first in modern times to set forth a true description of the organ and the traditional principles which un derlie its design and construction.' The obvious enthusiasm of the author, together with the photographs of great organs, should prove an inspiration to the reader. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Organ The object of this little work is to give an outline of the history of that wonderful outcome of human ingenuity and skill known as the organ, from documentary evidence, apart from the vague speculations of Kircher and others. The known history of the organ begins with the machine of Ctesibius, of Alexandria, in which air was forced into a trumpet by the efforts of water to "rise to its own level." In mediaeval times the force of gravity replaced that of water, weights being placed on a bellows, from which the air was thus driven into the pipes with the requisite strength. Speculations as to the nature of the organs mentioned in Genesis and elsewhere in the Scriptures have no bearing on the history of the instrument, for when, during the Reformation, the Bible was translated into various modern languages, the translators, knowing nothing of the instruments there mentioned, simply made use of musical terms familiar to them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Recent Revolution in Organ Building: Being an Account of Modern Developments Some years ago the elder and deacons of a Scotch church were assembled in solemn conclave to discuss the prospective installation of a pipe organ. The table was piled high with plans and specifications and discussion ran rife as to whether they should have a two-manual or a three-manual instrument - a Great and Swell or a Great, Swell, and Choir organ. At last Deacon MacNab, the church treasurer and a personage of importance, got a chance to speak. "Mr. Chairman, said he, "I don't see why we should have a Great, a Swell, and a Choir organ. I think that one organ is quite enough." Now, Deacon MacNab was a master tailor, and a good one at that; so the musical man who was pushing the thing through appealed to his professional instincts in explaining the situation by saying: "Surely, Mr. MacNab, you would not say that a man was properly dressed with only a coat on! You would expect him to have on a coat, waistcoat and trousers!" And the day was won for the three-manual organ. Of course there had been no organ in this church before, or the worthy deacon might have known more about it. If he had! read the second chapter of this book, he would have known all about it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most books dealing with the history of the organ have confined themselves to a single period, area, or even country. This invaluable new work is the first complete survey of the organ ever to have been made in any language. The author firmly bases his interpretations and judgment on extant documents whenever possible, on his practical experience in playing organs all over Europe, and on his close examination of a great variety of instruments at different stages of restoration or transformation. Eight chapters are devoted to the early period and four to the Renaissance. Then individual chapters consider the French classical organ, the organ of Bach, the Spanish baroque organ, the Italian baroque organ, the English organ before 1800, and the northern European organ. The final eight chapters discuss developments in the 19th and 20th centuries. Supplementing the text are a glossary and plates illustrating a full range of organs that are typical of their kind. The eminent English musicologist, organist, and harpsichordist, Peter (Fredric) Williams ranks among the foremost authorities on the organ.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Organ Registration IN planning a work of this character, which requires the expression of a great deal of personal opinion, it is evident, at the outset, that the author renders himself a target for considerable criticism, from those organists who happen to entertain different opinions on any branch of the subject. I am not unmindful of the fact that the success of the work would perhaps be assured, if it were possible to pronounce opinions with which every organist would agree. From the nature of the subject itself, and from a great diversity of personal tastes, any one can see that such a course is absolutely impossible.
