Book excerpt: Human beings need creation stories. Each culture has one, and is defined in part by its unique explanation of how things came to be. Despite the many differences in the creation stories of various cultures, each seems to serve much the same purpose: to answer questions about humanity's role in the larger whole. The people of the United States are no exception. Since the late-19th century, however, the country as a whole has not been able to agree on a common creation story. Part of the discord stems, of course, from the growing cultural and religious diversity of the USA. But Karl W. Giberson and Donald A. Yerxa explain that most of it flows from the reality that Americans rely heavily on two competing, very distinct, worldviews: modern naturalistic science and traditional Judeo-Christian religions. The interplay of these two ideals is at the base of America's ongoing search for its origins. Giberson and Yerxa delve into this search and America's diverse creation myths, myths that the authors dub the species of origins.

Book excerpt: Christians today - especially in America - are woefully ignorant about the Bible, and what impact it can have on a world of darkness. This despite the words of 1 Peter 3:15: "But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have." Thankfully, scholars like Henry Morris have seen fit to provide us with good answers for questions posed by Bible critics...and by multitudes of Christians, for Christ himself has provided us with many infallible proofs (Acts 1:2-3). Christians will be strengthened with these topics: Problems in verbal inspiration Fulfillment of prophecy The structure of Scripture Alleged Bible contradictions The Bible and science The Bible and ancient history The unique birth of Christ

BUT THE TRUTH IS that many of the major scientific contributions were made by scientists who were dedicated men of God. In Men of Science, Men of God, Dr. Henry Morris presents 101 biographies and Christian testimonies of scientists who believed in the Bible and in a personal Creator God - scientists who were pioneers and "founding fathers" of modern scientific disciplines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Christians, the issues raised by the different views on creation and evolution are challenging. Can a "young earth" be reconciled with a universe that appears to be billions of years old? Does scientific evidence point to a God who designed the universe and life in all its complexity? Three Views on Creation and Evolution deals with these and similar concerns as it looks at three dominant schools of Christian thought. Proponents of young earth creationism, old earth creationism, and theistic evolution each present their different views, tell why the controversy is important, and describe the interplay between their understandings of science and theology. Each view is critiqued by various scholars, and the entire discussion is summarized by Phillip E. Johnson and Richard H. Bube. The Counterpoints series provides a forum for comparison and critique of different views on issues important to Christians. Counterpoints books address two categories: Church Life and Bible and Theology. Complete your library with other books in the Counterpoints series.

Book excerpt: Creationists have acquired a more sophisticated intellectual arsenal. This book reveals the insubstantiality of their arguments. Creationism is no longer the simple notion it once was taken to be. Its new advocates have become more sophisticated in how they present their views, speaking of "intelligent design" rather than "creation science" and aiming their arguments against the naturalistic philosophical method that underlies science, proposing to replace it with a "theistic science." The creationism controversy is not just about the status of Darwinian evolution—it is a clash of religious and philosophical worldviews, for a common underlying fear among Creationists is that evolution undermines both the basis of morality as they understand it and the possibility of purpose in life. In Tower of Babel, philosopher Robert T. Pennock compares the views of the new creationists with those of the old and reveals the insubstantiality of their arguments. One of Pennock's major innovations is to turn from biological evolution to the less charged subject of linguistic evolution, which has strong theoretical parallels with biological evolution, both in content and in the sort of evidence scientists use to draw conclusions about origins. Of course, an evolutionary view of language does conflict with the Bible, which says that God created the variety of languages at one time as punishment for the Tower of Babel. Several chapters deal with the work of Phillip Johnson, a highly influential leader of the new Creationists. Against his and other views, Pennock explains how science uses naturalism and discusses the relationship between factual and moral issues in the creationism-evolution controversy. The book also includes a discussion of Darwin's own shift from creationist to evolutionist and an extended argument for keeping private religious beliefs separate from public scientific knowledge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible is Indeed a Book of Science, Revealed By God. We live in a “scientific age,” and the proliferation of scientific knowledge and the resulting technologies seem almost endless. Scientific discoveries and developments, however, can be a danger as well as a blessing to mankind. The modern world is desperately in need of God’s own wisdom concerning the purpose and meaning of true science. When you move beyond modern assumptions and false preconceptions, the Bible is found to not only reveal a thoroughly modern perspective on the real facts and principles of science but also to provide wisdom and guidance concerning its proper role in human life. Biology is the science of life, and Christ himself is “life.” Geology is the science of the earth, and He is the Creator of the ends of the earth. We also could speak of other sciences, but all must ultimately be ascribed to Christ. True knowledge of any component of His creation must depend ultimately on the knowledge of Christ and His Word. Reveals biblical insights for cosmology, astronomy, physics, thermodynamics, chemistry, geology, paleontology, biology, anthropology, and more Brings to light how scientific and statistical evidence, rationally evaluated, favor God over evolution

Book excerpt: A unique chronology with entries describing the key events in the 3,000-year conflict between religion and science over the explanation and definition of life on Earth. Exhaustively researched and authoritative, Chronology of the Evolution-Creationism Controversy does what no other work does: it examines the conflict between the religious and scientific views of life on Earth in its full 3,000-year historical context, showing readers how this roiling debate has played out over the centuries. With hundreds of entries, Chronology of the Evolution-Creationism Controversy describes specific cultural, religious, and scientific events relevant to the evolution-creationism controversy from the first notions of creationism in ancient Egypt to the present. Within this historical approach, it identifies a number of recurring themes that have shaped the debate through the ages, including famous court cases, the recurrence of the "intelligent design" argument, disagreements over the age of the Earth, and the impact of technological advances on both the scientific and faith-based viewpoints. While approaching the subject globally throughout, the book's second half focuses on tensions between science and religious thought in the United States since the early 1900s.
