Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Baptism, Its Subjects and Mode Scarcely ever hear the subject from our pulpits. There are hundreds of congrega tions in which the younger members never heard a sermon on Infant Baptism, and prob ably never more than a very hasty explana tion of our practice concerning the mode. The result is that, so far as such communities are educated at all on this subject, it is under other auspices than our own, and by no means friendly to our doctrines. I have thought that something of this character, in expensive and unpretentious, ought to be offered to those who lack time or disposition to study our more critical works; and with this view I send out these Discourses, be lieving they will measurably meet a real want, and contribute toward the removal of the more serious difficulties from the minds of. Though later than, most others in its origin, it has been behind but few in the danger or extent of its influence. While othen controversies have respected the great and fundamen-g tal truths of religion, and, as a consequence, have sep crated only those differing upon these points; this has, had for its immediate object an outward ordinance, and as a consequence, has seperated into dissociate bodies. The first edition was immediately taken up, and a second was so soon called for, that there was no opportunity for any alterations or additions, had any been deemed necessary. Since the publishers have informed me that another edition is now required, I have been led to reconsider the arguments, facts, and considerations of the original work. The writer hopes he is by no means insensible to the defects of the volume. The discussion of various topics treated of might be greatly extended, and new topics of grave importance might be noticed; but the introduction of much new matter would not comport with the design of the work, would increase its cost as Well as its size, and thereby diminish its usefulness as a popular treatise, intended for general circulation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Baptism: In Two Parts; Part First, Its Subjects; Part Second, Its Mode, Obligation, Import, and Relative Order It is well known to the student in church history, that few, very few, since the days of the apostles, have ever openly held to the damnation of any of those infants who die in infancy. The Calvinistic school forms the largest exception. There have been those who have held that all unbaptized infants, dying in infancy, go to a sort of middle state, between heaven and hell, as the reader will see in the fifth chapter of this work. Others, as St. Austin, (see pp. 209 with more consistency, held that where the want of baptism was not the fruit of any wicked and wilful disposition of the individual, he would be saved without it. The Protestant Episcopal Church, it appears, chooses, in regard to the state Of unbaptized infants hereafter, to observe entire silence. (see pp. 270, 271, of this work.) Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scripture Baptism: Its Mode and Subjects IT is well known that there is some di versity of opinion and practice in regard to the mode of christian baptism. The far greater part Of evangelical christians, amount ing to more than nine-tenths of the whole, content themselves with a simple application Of water by pouring or sprinkling, as the most scriptural and significant mode. On the other hand, a large and respectable divi sion of the Protestant church insist upon a dipping Of the Whole body, as essential to the validity of the ordinance. Another smaller division as warmly contend that the baptism is not valid, unless the dipping is thrice repeated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Baptism: An Examination of the Rev. Mr. Fowler's Lectures on the "Mode and Subjects of Baptism" Now I shall cheerfully leave my intelligent and candid fellow citizens to judge between me and the author, with regard to these charges of abuse, vulgarity, &c. After they have read my 'address' in reply to Concord', and my Response' to the First Congregational Church in Fall River; and especially when they shall have considered the course which Mr. F. And his people have taken with regard to this controversy. Still, as the author of these lectures aims his artillery at me, (though he has not used my name, ) it seems to devolve on me to examine his lectures And as I have from the first been willing that the light of day should shine on the whole of this controversy, I shall not now seek concealment, nor resort to artifice, but endeavor openly and fearlessly, and yet affectionately, to expose error and de' fend truth. In prosecuting the work before me, I intend to treat Rev. Mr. Fow ler and his people with entire respect; and I hope that I may yet live and have Opportunity to give them and the world substantial proof that I do not indulge any unkind feeling toward them as Chris tians. It would afford me sacred joy' to do them good - to promote their immortal welfare - to reciprocate every expression of Christian love.' I do sincerely, before God and men, publicly invite an inter change of kind offices with the Rev. Mr. Fowler and the members of his church, and I do hope that no unpleasant feelings arising from this controversy will be allowed to obstruct a friendly intercourse with each other. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Nature, Subjects and Mode of Christian Baptism The first edition of this little Treatise having been exhausted, and inquiries from different quarters hav ing been made for it, a second edition is now pre sented to the Christian public. The author had in tended to enlarge the work, by the introduction of additional matter, derived from the history of the Christian church; with a view to make it clearly evident, that infant baptism has prevailed from apostolic days. For this purpose, ample materials are at hand. On further reflection, however, it has been thought best to send it forth in its original form. It was designed to be a convenient manual, for the benefit of the disciple who desires to know the will of his Lord. And brevity, if combined with per spicuity, renders itmore suitable for the end intend ed. Arise, O Lord, plead thine own cause. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mode and Subjects of Baptism: Two Discourses Delivered Before the Cedar Creek Baptist Church, North Carolina, on Sunday, September 10, 1843 It is my purpose on the present occasion to show that immersion is the only christian baptism, and that it is contrary to all true eriti. Cism, and to the plain word of God, to introduce sprinkling, or pour. Mg, or anything else' into the place of immersion. And if I can prove th1s position, if I can convince you of its truth, I will call upon all believers here present, (who have not submitted to the ordinance, ) in the language of my text, why tarriest thou? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Doctrine of Christian Baptism: An Exposition of Its Nature, Subjects, Mode, and Duty The nature, design, obligation, and efficacy of Christian baptism should be carefully studied by all Christians, and especially by Christian ministers. This ordinance comes to us by Divine authority. When our Lord commissioned his disciples to go out and preach the gospel to all nations, he also commissioned them to baptize. The command to preach is no more authoritative than the command to baptize. They are joined together in the great commis sion. Here we date the divine origin of baptism as a standing, obligatory, and perpetual ordinance of the Christian Church. Here is the great charter from which the Christian ministry in all ages drew their Divine au thority for the administration of this ordinance. If it were not possible for us to know anything about the nature, design, and efficacy of this ordinance, this would not free us from the obligation, because the Lord commands it to be done. Abraham did not understand' the' design of the Allwise Father when he commanded him* to offer up Isaac as a sacrifice, but that did not prevent him from going forward. Obedience was his rule of action. Our Divine Lord says, If ye love me keep myf commandments. Every step the Christian takes along' the line of obedience will give him new strength and{ figor. The faultless Christ was careful to fulfill every, l righteous ordinance of the law, thereby teaching us the necessity and importance of obedience. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Baptism, Vol. 1: The Mode of Baptism Now, if the immersion here mentioned, was the actual Baptism, in the face of the whole Church and we know that Baptism was performed before the congregation - then all must admit that the progress of corruption had been fearfully rapid, and the sac rament of purity was perverted into an orgie of im modesty and shamelessness, only paralleled by some of the heathen abominations.
