Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long before American Indian women’s literature achieved its current popularity, the writings of E. Pauline Johnson (1861-1913) pioneered the field. A mixed-blood of Mohawk-English descent, Johnson gained renown for literary recitals and theatrical performances in Canada, England, and the United States, being billed at the turn of the century as the "Mohawk Princess." Many of Johnson’s stories in The Moccasin Maker depict nineteenth-century Indian women caught between the forces of cultural continuity and the pressures of assimilation.

Book excerpt: Enter the world of E. Pauline Johnson's 'The Moccasin Maker', a collection of stories and an essay that explore the complexities of mixed-race relationships in 19th century Canada. While not considered great literature, Johnson's works hold historical significance as reflections of Canadian culture, racial ideologies, and popular tastes of the time. With a narrative style that may challenge modern readers, these tales delve into themes of love, family disapproval, cultural clashes, and the profound impact of colonization on indigenous traditions. Unveiling the struggles faced by interracial couples, Johnson presents a diverse range of characters, challenging stereotypes while occasionally reinforcing them.

The book features reports on the oral traditions of various tribes and topics such as the relation of the Bible, dreams, oratory, humor, autobiography, and federal land policies to Native American literature. Eight additional essays cover teaching Native American literature, new fiction, new theater, and other important topics, and there are bio-critical essays on more than 40 writers ranging from William Apes (who in the early 19th century denounced white society's treatment of his people) to contemporary poet Ray Young Bear. Packed with information that was once scattered and scarce, the Handbook of NativeAmerican Literature -a valuable one-volume resource-is sure to appeal to everyone interested in Native American history, culture, and literature. Book Synopsis Tekahionwake: E. Pauline Johnson's Writings on Native North America by : E. Pauline Johnson
Download or read book Tekahionwake: E. Pauline Johnson's Writings on Native North America written by E. Pauline Johnson and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2015-12-30 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: E. Pauline Johnson, also known as Tekahionwake, is remarkable as one of a very few early North American Indigenous poets and fiction writers. Most Indigenous writers of her time were men educated for the ministry who published religious, anthropological, autobiographical, political, and historical works, rather than poetry and fiction. More extraordinary still, Johnson became both a canonical poet and a literary celebrity, performing on stage for fifteen years across Canada, in the United States, and in London. Johnson is now seen as a central figure in the intellectual history of Canada and the US, and an important historical example of Indigenous feminism. This edition collects a diverse range of Johnson’s writings on what was then called “the Indian question” and on the question of her own complex Indigenous identity. Six thematic sections gather Johnson’s poetry, fiction, and nonfiction, and a rich selection of historical appendices provides context for her public life and her work as a feminist and activist for Indigenous people.

Book Synopsis American Indians and the American Dream by : Kasey R. Keeler
Download or read book American Indians and the American Dream written by Kasey R. Keeler and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2023-05-23 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the processes and policies of urbanization and suburbanization in American Indian communities Nearly seven out of ten American Indians live in urban areas, yet studies of urban Indian experiences remain scant. Studies of suburban Natives are even more rare. Today’s suburban Natives, the fastest-growing American Indian demographic, highlight the tensions within federal policies working in tandem to move and house differing groups of people in very different residential locations. In American Indians and the American Dream, Kasey R. Keeler examines the long history of urbanization and suburbanization of Indian communities in Minnesota. At the intersection of federal Indian policy and federal housing policy, American Indians and the American Dream analyzes the dispossession of Indian land, property rights, and patterns of home ownership through programs and policies that sought to move communities away from their traditional homelands to reservations and, later, to urban and suburban areas. Keeler begins this analysis with the Homestead Act of 1862, then shifts to the Indian Reorganization Act in the early twentieth century, the creation of Little Earth in Minneapolis, and Indian homeownership during the housing bubble of the early 2000s. American Indians and the American Dream investigates the ways American Indians accessed homeownership, working with and against federal policy, underscoring American Indian peoples’ unequal and exclusionary access to the way of life known as the American dream. Book Synopsis American Folk Art [2 volumes] by : Kristin G. Congdon
Download or read book American Folk Art [2 volumes] written by Kristin G. Congdon and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2012-03-19 with total page 789 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Folk art is as varied as it is indicative of person and place, informed by innovation and grounded in cultural context. The variety and versatility of 300 American folk artists is captured in this collection of informative and thoroughly engaging essays. American Folk Art: A Regional Reference offers a collection of fascinating essays on the life and work of 300 individual artists. Some of the men and women profiled in these two volumes are well known, while others are important practitioners who have yet to receive the notice they merit. Because many of the artists in both categories have a clear identity with their land and culture, the work is organized by geographical region and includes an essay on each region to help make connections visible. There is also an introductory essay on U.S. folk art as a whole. Those writing about folk art to date tend to view each artist as either traditional or innovative. One of the major contributions of this work is that it demonstrates that folk artists more often exhibit both traits; they are grounded in their cultural context and creative in the way they make work their own. Such insights expand the study of folk art even as they readjust readers' understanding of who folk artists are.
