Book Synopsis I Thought You'd Never Ask by : Steve Spracklen
Download or read book I Thought You'd Never Ask written by Steve Spracklen and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2020-04-05 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These are the recollections of "Ragtime Bob" Darch (1920-2002) told in his own words and transcribed by his longtime friend Steve Spracklen. Bob begins by recalling his life from childhood in Detroit through his college years and then service in World War II as an army paratrooper and in the Korean conflict as an Alaskan post engineer. Then he recounts his nearly six decades as an itinerant ragtime piano player sharing stories as only Bob could tell them of the many celebrities with whom he worked and the countless tales of his experiences "on the Ragtime Trail." Bob entertained his audiences with music and stories of ragtime, past and present. He was not encumbered by facts...he had a story to tell. Bob died in 2002 at the age of 82 and he is buried in Sedalia, Missouri where he often said his style of classic ragtime music began. March 31, 2020 marked the centennial of his birth and like he said of ragtime, Bob's legacy isn't dead, it isn't even sick.
Book Synopsis Joseph F. Lamb by : Carol J. Binkowski
Download or read book Joseph F. Lamb written by Carol J. Binkowski and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joseph F. Lamb (1887-1960) composed with enthusiasm and was influenced by a variety of sources, all kinds of music, cultures, traditions and the everyday. Although he is considered one of classic ragtime's "big three"--along with Scott Joplin and James Scott--he did not fit the usual profile. He was musically self-taught, held a corporate job, and composed in his spare time, yet wrote piano rags Joplin enthusiastically championed and returned to composing and well-deserved recognition long after the end of the ragtime era. This biography focuses on his music and his world, and is drawn from family and research sources. It includes a foreword by two of Lamb's children.

Download or read book Ragging it written by H. Loring White and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ragging It takes the reader on a lively, historical journey back to the days of vaudeville, fancy women, amusement parks, lynch mobs, saloons, and cabarets--a time when the upbeat music of ragtime was a craze that permeated our culture. Author H. Loring White, a former history professor, focuses on the vastly contrasting biographies of Theodore Roosevelt and Scott Joplin, while showcasing the uniqueness of ragtime--the first popular syncopated music of the masses. In 1900, times began to move more quickly. With citizens no longer isolated on farms, ragtime was eagerly accepted by the world's first generation of popular culture, which also reveled in cakewalks; coon songs; and animal dances, such as the Grizzly Bear, Turkey Trot, and Bunny Hug. White recounts true stories about show business, political events, the repression of African-Americans, the world's fairs, and the triumphs of technology. Although ragtime disappeared abruptly in just a few years with the emergence of jazz, White never lets you forget the vital role that ragtime played in the Progressive Era of American culture. With its new and vital interpretation of the Roosevelt era, he will take you back to a lively time in history when everyone was Ragging It!

Book Synopsis A Language of Song by : Samuel Charters
Download or read book A Language of Song written by Samuel Charters and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2009-05-06 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In A Language of Song, Samuel Charters—one of the pioneering collectors of African American music—writes of a trip to West Africa where he found “a gathering of cultures and a continuing history that lay behind the flood of musical expression [he] encountered everywhere . . . from Brazil to Cuba, to Trinidad, to New Orleans, to the Bahamas, to dance halls of west Louisiana and the great churches of Harlem.” In this book, Charters takes readers along to those and other places, including Jamaica and the Georgia Sea Islands, as he recounts experiences from a half-century spent following, documenting, recording, and writing about the Africa-influenced music of the United States, Brazil, and the Caribbean. Each of the book’s fourteen chapters is a vivid rendering of a particular location that Charters visited. While music is always his focus, the book is filled with details about individuals, history, landscape, and culture. In first-person narratives, Charters relates voyages including a trip to the St. Louis home of the legendary ragtime composer Scott Joplin and the journey to West Africa, where he met a man who performed an hours-long song about the Europeans’ first colonial conquests in Gambia. Throughout the book, Charters traces the persistence of African musical culture despite slavery, as well as the influence of slaves’ songs on subsequent musical forms. In evocative prose, he relates a lifetime of travel and research, listening to brass bands in New Orleans; investigating the emergence of reggae, ska, and rock-steady music in Jamaica’s dancehalls; and exploring the history of Afro-Cuban music through the life of the jazz musician Bebo Valdés. A Language of Song is a unique expedition led by one of music’s most observant and well-traveled explorers.

Book excerpt: Brun Campbell, a 15-year-old piano-playing fool, hears Scott Joplin's Maple Leaf Rag played one 1898 afternoon in Oklahoma City. It's destiny calling. Asking for ragtime lessons, he's told, No, Ragtime is colored music. So Brun runs away from the family farm to Sedalia, Missouri, to persuade Joplin to take him on as a pupil. What Brun doesn't expect is to trip over the body of a young woman. He thoughtlessly picks up a couple of items before he rushes away from the murder scene. When Edward Fitzgerald, a man who befriended Brun his first night in town, is arrested for the woman's murder, Brun is certain he's innocent. But if the boy shows anyone the things he pocketed at the scene - things he now knows belonged to Scott Joplin - he'll point the finger at the composer ... and himself. Brun decides to get Fitzgerald, Joplin, and himself off the hook by finding the real killer, but for that he eventually needs some help from Dr. Overstreet, the alcoholic town mayor; and John Stark, a man pushing sixty, who's been employing Brun at his music store. Sedalia is rife with suspects, some of them opportunists bent on stealing Joplin's music. And then there are the girls and women - mysteries to Brun - like a teenager seized with religious fever, a couple of mischievous prostitutes, and an attractive, ambitious young woman with a hint of scarlet in her past, who further complicate his pursuit of the killer.

Download or read book The Melting Pot written by Elsia Kelly and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2008-11 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Book is written out of frustration and anger. This is the Twenty First Century and segregation and racism are still alive and being practiced and tolerated all across America. People of color are being treated with discrimination and injustice. They are being beaten and sometimes chased to their deaths for simple things. They are the target of the Police Officers. They are being shot down on the streets for no reason. The judicial system is not acting in a manner that treats each individual fairly regardless of race or color. Instead the men are thrown into jail until a trial date is set. Then they are tried and sent off to prison for a long time. When they are returned to society the better part of their youth is over. For the same offence the other skin color will receive a much lighter sentence. The time has come for a change in this diverse nation of America. Therefore, the American Congress should pass the law that anyone who practices and tolerates racism and discrimination should be punished. African Americans need to get themselves involved with other blacks from other countries of the world and stop being prejudiced against them. Black people originate from one land and there should not be prejudiced among them. It is time for black people to open their eyes to the legacy that has been laid down by their founding fathers and mothers and accept the challenge. Know what you want to be in life and work towards your goal. Never let anyone or racism get in the way of preventing you from being what you would like to be in life. Your future is in your hands.
