Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Missions and Missionaries of California, Vol. 2 The field covered by this work has proved so vast that it was found necessary to treat what is of general interest separately from that which is of but local concern in order to avoid confusion and endless repetitions. The result is the division into General and Local History. The General Account fills this and the next two volumes. The Local History with the biographical notes on all the missionaries will require two more volumes. Although great pains have been taken to insure accuracy, it is quite possible that errors have crept into the narrative. We are but human. If kindly pointed out, whatever may be amiss will be corrected at the first opportunity. It is but just to remember those gratefully who have lent their assistance in any manner; but their number is so large that it is not practicable to mention them all. May they rest assured that we are deeply sensible of their kindness. We herewith cordially thank each and all for the interest manifested and for the aid so generously given. We are under special obligations to Dr. Herbert E. Bolton, now of the State University at Berkeley, for the use of all the documents quoted under Museo Nacional and Archivo General y Publico, as well as for many other acts of kindness which literary men know how to appreciate; to the Rev. Fr. Guardian Novatus Benzing, O. F. M., of Mission Santa Barbara, for much assistance in the translation of Spanish documents; to the Rev. Florian Zettel, O. F. M., for the tedious labor of photographing numerous autograph signatures and a great number of mission views; and to our youthful assistant, the Rev. Fr. Fernando Ortiz, O. F. M., for translating numerous Spanish documents and for patient aid in revising the manuscript and reading the proofs. Dios los bendiga a todos! Book excerpt: This copious collection of reminiscences, reports, letters, and documents allows readers to experience the vast and varied landscape of early California from the viewpoint of its inhabitants. What emerges is not the Spanish California depicted by casual visitors—a culture obsessed with finery, horses, and fandangos—but an ever-shifting world of aspiration and tragedy, pride and loss. Conflicts between missionaries and soldiers, Indians and settlers, friends and neighbors spill from these pages, bringing the ferment of daily life into sharp focus.

Book excerpt: With a strong social emphasis and succinct narrative, COMPETING VISIONS: A HISTORY OF CALIFORNIA, 2E chronicles the stories of people who have had an impact on the state's history while presenting California as a hub of competing economic, social, and political visions. It highlights the state's cultural diversity and explicitly compares it to other Western states, the nation, and the world--illustrating the national and international significance of California's history. Its chronological organization and thematic approach enables readers to keep track of events and fully understand their significance. Telling the full story, the text concludes by discussing such current events as immigration and demographic changes, the Occupy Movement, energy challenges, and more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Christianity in the West has often been told, but the history of Christianity in the East is not as well known. The seed was the same: the good news of Jesus Christ for the whole world, which Christians call "the gospel." But it was sown by different sowers; it was planted in different soil; it grew with a different flavor; and it was gathered by different reapers. It is too often forgotten that the faith moved east across Asia as early as it moved west into Europe. Western church history tends to follow Paul to Philippi and to Rome and on across Europe to the conversion of Constantine and the barbarians. With some outstanding exceptions, only intermittently has the West looked beyond Constantinople as its center. It was a Christianity that has for centuries remained unashamedly Asian. A History of Christianity in Asia makes available immense amounts of research on religious pluralism of Asia and how Christianity spread long before the modern missionary movement went forth in the shelter of Western military might. Invaluable for historians of Asia and scholars of mission, it is stimulating for all readers interested in Christian history. --

Book excerpt: Over nearly three centuries, Jesuit, Franciscan, and Dominican missionaries built a network of churches throughout the “new world” of New Spain. Since the early twentieth century, scholars have studied the colonial architecture of southern New Spain, but they have largely ignored the architecture of the north. However, as this book clearly demonstrates, the colonial architecture of Northern New Spain—an area that encompasses most of the southwestern United States and much of northern Mexico—is strikingly beautiful and rich with meaning. After more than two decades of research, both in the field and in archives around the world, Gloria Fraser Giffords has authored the definitive book on this architecture. Giffords has a remarkable eye for detail and for images both grand and diminutive. Because so many of the buildings she examines have been destroyed, she sleuthed through historical records in several countries, and she discovered that the architecture and material culture of northern New Spain reveal the influences of five continents. As she examines objects as large as churches or as small as ornamental ceramic tile she illuminates the sometimes subtle, sometimes striking influences of the religious, social, and artistic traditions of Europe (from the beginning of the Christian era through the nineteenth century), of the Muslim countries ringing the Mediterranean (from the seventh through the fifteenth centuries), and of Northern New Spain’s indigenous peoples (whose art influenced the designs of occupying Europeans). Sanctuaries of Earth, Stone, and Light is a pathbreaking book, featuring 200 stunning photographs and over 300 illustrations ranging from ceremonial garments to detailed floor plans of the churches.
