Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Missionary Work of the Church in the West Among the favorable features are the open mindedness and open-heartedness Of our frontier people. The prairie winds and new environment seem to have swept away many Of their prejudices; and they are generally willing to give ideas and methods new to themselves a fair consideration and accept them on their merits. Far from the madding crowd and strenuous life Of cities, in close communion with nature and with nature's God they are more disposed to entertain and con sider religious matters. Again they are hospitable and generous according to their ability. They think lightly Of difficulties, and are extremely hope ful. These characteristics are favorable to the introduction Of the Church and her ways. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Missionary Work of the Church: Its Principles, History, Claims, and Present Aspects Dr. Stowell's "Missionary Church," which, in a somewhat modified form, is reprinted in the following pages, is like one of those works of ancient art, some time lost to the world by adverse events, and subsequently restored to the light of day and the appreciative gaze of mankind. Had the gifted and lamented author lived, he would have greatly enriched our Christian literature with the productions of his active and well-stored mind; and among these I cannot but think would have been fresh editions of this admirable book. I am thankful that the honour - for such indeed I deem it, alike because of the grandeur and importance of the subject, and that my name is thus associated with his to whom I am so deeply indebted - has been left to me of bringing this new edition before the public. A work so eloquent, so fervid, and dealing so admirably with the first principles which underlie all Missionary effort, should not be lost. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of a Missionary in the Great West When he could barely walk, I took him to the cathedral one afternoon when I went back for something I had left: after morning service. I left him down in the nave by the door, while I walked up to the chancel. I was busied there for a few moments, and when I turned to go out, he had advanced half-way up the middle aisle, and was standing where the declining sun, streaming through the great painted west window, threw a golden light around his curly head. And a tiny little oh jcet he was in that great, quiet church. It was very still. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from To the East by Way of the West Bishop Marvin could not have produced a work like this, if he had not possessed a mind of unusually clear perceptions, a sound judgment, poetic and imaginative powers of a high order, indomitable energy, and unquenchable zeal in the cause of Christ. The benefit conferred upon the Church by this missionary tour, thus faithfully and picturesquely reported, is incalculable. It has made the pulse of the Church beat higher - it has enlarged our view Of the mission field, and suggested plans for its culti vation - it has greatly strengthened the hands and comforted the hearts of our little band of missionaries in China, and those of other Churches in the lands visited by him, and the publication of his letters will do much to fan the flame of missionary zeal in the widespread Connection of which he was so bright an ornament and in which he labored with so much zeal and success. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great First-Work of the Church, Missions The author of this little volume has given us a great truth in its title - "The Great First-Work of the Church Is Missions." While most of us may not need anything further to convince us of this truth, we are all much in need of that more important thing - the dynamic of conviction that expresses this truth in the reality of service. If these chapters help to that end in any one of us, they will be fully worth while. The writer of this book needs no introduction in his own denomination. While his twenty-eight years in the mission work of western India; the faith and courage that led him to be the first to answer the call to pagan lands in the Church of the Brethren; his desire to maintain habits of study and investigation, which was expressed in his receiving a degree from Northwestern University, where he and his son Emmert spent a year in the graduate school, easily entitle W. B. Stover to honor and titles that would be the envy of most of us, yet he is best known and happiest as Bro. Stover, a friend of men, and a servant of the Lord. In these few chapters he has written well. He has called our attention to the more important things in missions - the things which he has learned and exemplified in his successful missionary service. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Planting of the Church, Vol. 1 of 2: A Compendium of Missionary History; In Two Parts; Pre-Reformation Missions and Missionaries Conscious of many more imperfections than those which obtrude themselves, to dedicate this volume to any of the many to whom it should be dedicated would be presumption. To acknowledge indebtedness is another matter, and in sending out its pages there must first be inscribed some of the names without whom it would probably not have been written. My Grandfather's memory and his unfinished history have been a household possession since my earliest memory, and it was first of all from Bishop Williams, his great pupil, that the encouragement came which tempted me to follow even at such distance, in his footsteps. For help in preparation I must also record my indebtedness to Miss Smiley and the S. H. S. H. S., whose helpfulness in the course I took will ever be an inspiration. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Apostle of the Western Church: Memoir of the Right Reverend Jackson Kemper First Missionary Bishop of the American Church, With Notices of Some of His Contemporaries; A Contribution to the Religious History of the Western States IN a note to his sketch of Jackson Kemper, in his Bishops of the American Church, Bishop Perry wrote His life is yet to be written. It will be the history of the founding of the Church in the middle West. No apology is necessary for a biography of Bishop Kemper; in fact, it is a reflection upon the church that she has not had one before. There is a certain vulgarity about a family, an institution or a nation that is ignorant of and indifferent to its past. Every church man old or young, but especially the young, and especially in the dioceses that have sprung out of Kemper's old juris diction, should be familiar with the facts in his career. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Missionary Papers: Published Originally in the Missionary Magazine We fervently congratulate the churches to whom we sustain spe cial relations on the large additions which so many have received to their membership. The distinctive principles of our denomination require us to take it for granted that the churches have been careful in the admission of members; that the yet uncounted thousands of the baptized have gladly received the word, and given credible evidence that they are new creatures by walking in newness of life. Born of God, they have Spiritual vitality, and are living to Him, and for Him, and upon Him. Bought with a price, they are his, and endeavoring to glorify Him with both the body and the spirit.. Christ liveth in them, and henceforth they are to live, not unto themselves, but unto Him who is their Life. Having received Him, they are walking in Him, doing his will, honoring his Headship. Such is the theory of Baptist membership; a scru tinizing world will watch for the practical illustration. Mere acc-retions to the quantity of a church are not always an augmentation of its true strength. Much depends upon their qual ity. Numerical additions are good only as they add to the mass of life, and enlarge the amount of working ability. The cases must be few where the favored churches do not find themselves strengthened by the numbers received, and feel that their increase of moral power brings with it a corresponding measure of responsibility to labor for the true end of a gospel chureh - the subjugation of the woe to Christ. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church's Marching Orders: Or Suggestive Thoughts on the Missionary Work "And the Lord said unto Moses, Wherefore criest thou unto me? speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward." (Ex. xiv. 15.) This language, spoken by the Almighty to Moses, and through him to the Israelites, may he regarded as both a reproof and a command, which the conduct of the children of Israel made necessary. They had just reached the Red Sea on their way from Egypt to Canaan; and with the sea in their front, impassable mountains on either side, and the Egyptians, from whom they were fleeing, immediately in their rear, their destruction seemed inevitable. In this the hour of their peril, instead of trusting God and calmly waiting his interposition as directed by Moses, they gave themselves to fault-finding, charging Moses with bringing them into the wilderness to die. Hence the reproof and command of the text - "Wherefore criest thou unto me? speak to the children of Israel, that they go forward."
