Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transcribed and edited by Mark Harris, this book contains the daily entries of the four missionary journals kept by his father Edward Daniel Harris, who as a young man spent three and one-half years ministering to the Maoris in New Zealand. From 1917 to 1920 Elder Harris traveled throughout the Wairarapa and Manawatu districts of New Zealand's North Island. Following the unique missionary pattern of the Mormon Church, Edward traveled from village to village, living with Maori families. Oft times he stayed in a different home each night. Besides encouraging them to have faith in God and live correct principles, he also worked in their homes and fields, played with their children, cared for their sick and poor, prayed with them, buried their dead and in every way tried to meet their needs. Much of his writings tell of the difficulty traveling by bicycle throughout rural New Zealand, often on hot summer days or cold and rainy winter days. The country roads could be extremely dusty or extremely muddy. In recalling some of his missionary experiences, Edward Daniel Harris wrote "I learned the [Maori] language well enough to explain the gospel to them. I really got along with them, eating on the floor or having dinner in wealthy and well-kept homes."

Download or read book Mark's Little Joke Book written by Mark Harris and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2007-11-06 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of Popular American Humor. Mark Harris likes to tell jokes and stories. He is part of the large Harris Family that thrives on story-telling. This collection of about four hundred jokes and stories are the best that Mark has heard. Many of the stories are very old and have been told and retold through the years. They have been changed or modified to fit current times or the needs of a particular story-teller. Some of the jokes are of fairly recent origin, but in most cases, a story or joke--whether old or new--cannot be attributed to its' creator. None of the stories originated with Mr. Harris: he is first a story collector and then a story-teller. At any reunion or gathering of the Harris Family, stories are told by those of the current generation. This art is now a family tradition, started generations ago. Perhaps the story that can best be told is that story-telling in the Harris Family will continue long into the future.

Book excerpt: CHINGLISH: the amazing English that is written and spoken by Chinese citizens who have studied English as a second language. CHINGLISH is expressive, colorful and often poetic as depicted in the photographs and verse contained in this book. Of the thousands of photographs Mr. Harris took during his two years in China, those of business and tourist signs in CHINGLISH are most unique. Impressed with the quality of his students' essays, he collected the most expressive CHINGLISH sentences. In both photographs and verse the reader is invited to TAY ATTENT ION to CHINGLISH.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selected by Choice magazine as an Outstanding Academic Title Land ownership was not the sole reason for conflict between Indians and English, Jenny Pulsipher writes in Subjects unto the Same King, a book that cogently redefines the relationship between Indians and colonists in seventeenth-century New England. Rather, the story is much more complicated—and much more interesting. It is a tale of two divided cultures, but also of a host of individuals, groups, colonies, and nations, all of whom used the struggle between and within Indian and English communities to promote their own authority. As power within New England shifted, Indians appealed outside the region—to other Indian nations, competing European colonies, and the English crown itself—for aid in resisting the overbearing authority of such rapidly expanding societies as the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Thus Indians were at the center—and not always on the losing end—of a contest for authority that spanned the Atlantic world. Beginning soon after the English settled in Plymouth, the power struggle would eventually spawn a devastating conflict—King Philip's War—and draw the intervention of the crown, resulting in a dramatic loss of authority for both Indians and colonists by century's end. Through exhaustive research, Jenny Hale Pulsipher has rewritten the accepted history of the Indian-English relationship in colonial New England, revealing it to be much more complex and nuanced than previously supposed.
