Book Synopsis General E.A. Paine in Western Kentucky by : Dieter C. Ullrich
Download or read book General E.A. Paine in Western Kentucky written by Dieter C. Ullrich and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When General E. A. Paine assumed command of the U.S. Army's District of Western Kentucky at Paducah in the summer of 1864, he faced a defiant populace, a thriving black market and undisciplined troops plagued by low morale. Guerrillas pillaged towns and murdered the vocal few that supported the Union. Paine's task was to enforce discipline and mollify the secessionist majority in a 2,300-square-mile district. In less than two months, he succeeded where others had failed. For secessionists, his tenure was a "reign of terror"--for the Unionist minority, a "happy and jubilant" time. An abolitionist, Paine encouraged the enlistment of black troops and fair wages for former slaves. Yet his principled views led to his downfall. Critics and enemies falsified reports, leading to his removal from command and a court-martial. He was exonerated on all but one minor charge yet historians have perpetuated the Paine-the-monster myth. This book tells the complete story.
Book Synopsis States at War, Volume 5 by : Richard F. Miller
Download or read book States at War, Volume 5 written by Richard F. Miller and published by University Press of New England. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While many Civil War reference books exist, there is no single compendium that contains important details about the combatant states (and territories) that Civil War researchers can readily access for their work. People looking for information about the organizations, activities, economies, demographics, and prominent personalities of Civil War States and state governments must assemble data from a variety of sources, with many key sources remaining unavailable online. This crucial reference book, the fifth in the States at War series, provides vital information on the organization, activities, economies, demographics, and prominent personalities of Ohio during the Civil War. Its principal sources include the Official Records, state adjutant-general reports, legislative journals, state and federal legislation, federal and state executive speeches and proclamations, and the general and special orders issued by the military authorities of both governments, North and South. Designed and organized for easy use by professional historians and amateurs, this book can be read in two ways: by individual state, with each chapter offering a stand-alone history of an individual stateÕs war years; or across states, comparing reactions to the same event or solutions to the same problems.

Book Synopsis The Saints and the Union by : Everette Beach Long
Download or read book The Saints and the Union written by Everette Beach Long and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 1981 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long, noted Civil War historian and long-time research assistant to the late Bruce Catton, reveals a neglected but fascinating chapter in American frontier, Mormon, Indian, and Civil War history. His lively portrayal of two volatile personalities -- Mormon leader Brigham Young and U.S. military commander General Patrick Connor -- depicts events which helped shape the "opening up of the West." While the Civil War raged in the East, the Mormons in Utah zealously continued to guard their cultural identity and church practices from federal control. At the same time, however, they lobbied hard for statehood, but were continually thwarted by a series of inept or antagonistic federal authorities. Drawing upon seldom-used archival material from the Mormon Church, Long's astute study depicts the earnest nature of this Mormon-federal conflict by focusing upon the battle of wills and words beteen Young and Connor. - Jacket flap.
