Book Synopsis The Mirages of Marriage by : William J. Lederer
Download or read book The Mirages of Marriage written by William J. Lederer and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 1968 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This helpful, incisive analysis of marriage in America discusses the false assumptions of modern marriage and how to make a marriage work. It is imperative to realize, the authors argue, that the marital relationship is an interlocked system in itself, not a function of individual partners. They offer techniques for appraising one's own marriage, discuss the use of counselors and the dangers of unilateral therapy, and outline the major elements of a satisfactory marriage.
Download or read book Mirages written by Anaïs Nin and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-15 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mirages opens at the dawn of World War II, when Anaïs Nin fled Paris, where she lived for fifteen years with her husband, banker Hugh Guiler, and ends in 1947 when she meets the man who would be “the One,” the lover who would satisfy her insatiable hunger for connection. In the middle looms a period Nin describes as “hell,” during which she experiences a kind of erotic madness, a delirium that fuels her search for love. As a child suffering abandonment by her father, Anaïs wrote, “Close your eyes to the ugly things,” and, against a horrifying backdrop of war and death, Nin combats the world’s darkness with her own search for light. Mirages collects, for the first time, the story that was cut from all of Nin’s other published diaries, particularly volumes 3 and 4 of The Diary of Anaïs Nin, which cover the same time period. It is the long-awaited successor to the previous unexpurgated diaries Henry and June, Incest, Fire, and Nearer the Moon. Mirages answers the questions Nin readers have been asking for decades: What led to the demise of Nin’s love affair with Henry Miller? Just how troubled was her marriage to Hugh Guiler? What is the story behind Nin’s “children,” the effeminate young men she seemed to collect at will? Mirages is a deeply personal story of heartbreak, despair, desperation, carnage, and deep mourning, but it is also one of courage, persistence, evolution, and redemption that reaches beyond the personal to the universal.

Download or read book Grown-Up Marriage written by Judith Viorst and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2008-06-23 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although marriage is for grown-ups, very few of us are grown up when we marry. Here, the bestselling author of Suddenly Sixty and Necessary Losses presents her life-affirming perspective on the joys, heartaches, difficulties, and possibilities of a grown-up marriage -- and no, that's not an oxymoron! Featuring interviews with married women and men, the findings of couples therapists, the truths offered by literature and movies, and a bemused exploration of her own marriage, Judith Viorst illuminates the issues couples struggle with from "I do" through "till death do us part." Examining marital rivalry, marital manners, marital sex (extramarital, too), marital fighting and apologies, what kids do for (and to) marriage, and the boredom and bliss of everyday married life, Viorst leaves no marital stone unturned. From the early years when we wonder "Who is this person?" and "What am I doing here?" to the realities of divorce, remarriage, and growing older (and old) together, Viorst offers insights and advice with honesty, humanity, and humor -- all the while recognizing how tough it is to be married and, when it works, how very precious it can be.

Book Synopsis The Mathematics of Marriage by : John M. Gottman
Download or read book The Mathematics of Marriage written by John M. Gottman and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2005-01-14 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Divorce rates are at an all-time high. But without a theoretical understanding of the processes related to marital stability and dissolution, it is difficult to design and evaluate new marriage interventions. The Mathematics of Marriage provides the foundation for a scientific theory of marital relations. The book does not rely on metaphors, but develops and applies a mathematical model using difference equations. The work is the fulfillment of the goal to build a mathematical framework for the general system theory of families first suggested by Ludwig Von Bertalanffy in the 1960s.The book also presents a complete introduction to the mathematics involved in theory building and testing, and details the development of experiments and models. In one "marriage experiment," for example, the authors explored the effects of lowering or raising a couple's heart rates. Armed with their mathematical model, they were able to do real experiments to determine which processes were affected by their interventions. Applying ideas such as phase space, null clines, influence functions, inertia, and uninfluenced and influenced stable steady states (attractors), the authors show how other researchers can use the methods to weigh their own data with positive and negative weights. While the focus is on modeling marriage, the techniques can be applied to other types of psychological phenomena as well.

Book Synopsis When One Wants Out And The Other Doesn't by : John F. Crosby
Download or read book When One Wants Out And The Other Doesn't written by John F. Crosby and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-24 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For anyone who practices marriage and family therapy the author says they have one kind of client population that seems to be a modal or predominating type. For three decades he has experienced more marital situations where one of the couple wants “out” of the marriage and the other wants to “stay in” than any other type. The idea for this collection of first-person therapy methodologies developed after two successive national meetings of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT), in New York (1985) and Orlando (1986). The cases that were discussed were characterized by the presence of alcoholism, and drug and other addictions, rather than presentations that dealt with a polarized couple wherein the marriage had simply become a devitalized, ho-hum relationship. This volume seeks to address the balance.
Book Synopsis Christian Marriage by : David Michael Thomas
Download or read book Christian Marriage written by David Michael Thomas and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book represents a theology of marriage. It is not intended as a manual for solving marital problems, or as a self-help guide on how to improve one's marriage. Rather, its basic goal is to bring forward into our time, with all its uniqueness and peculiarities, major insights of the Christian faith as they relate to married life . . . . "Through the love of wife and husband, woman and man, through loving words pronounced in public in formal ceremony and unfolded in the time that ensues, through the couple's collaboration with God's creative power in brining new life into the world, through the spirituality lived in transforming creation, the sacrament of marriage brings the Spirit of God into the world. Each couple has the power to block this process, but what is more important to affirm is their capacity to advance it. And it happens." -From Chapter 1
