Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular blogger Shannan Martin offers Christians who are longing for a more meaningful life a simple starting point: learn what it is to love and be loved right where God has placed you. For Christ-followers living in an increasingly complicated world, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed and unsure of how to live a life of intention and meaning. Where do we even begin? Shannan Martin offers a surprisingly simple answer: uncover the hidden corners of our cities and neighborhoods and invest deeply in the lives of people around us. She walks us through her own discoveries about the vital importance of paying attention, as well as the hard but rewarding truth about showing up and committing for the long haul, despite the inevitable encounters with brokenness and uncertainty. With transparency, humor, heart-tugging storytelling, and more than a little personal confession, Martin shows us that no matter where we live or how much we have, as we learn what it is to be with people as Jesus was, we'll find our very lives. The details will look quiet and ordinary, and the call will both exhaust and exhilarate us. But it will be the most worth-it adventure we will ever take. “This is a message the world needs. So often we overcomplicate ‘service’ or this elusive call to ministry when all the while ministry is right in front of us. Shannan reminds us of the simple, yet beautiful call to love our neighbor and what that could really look like today. We are reminded that extravagant love in ordinary moments does indeed lead to an extraordinary life.” --Katie Davis Majors, New York Times bestselling author of Kisses from Katie (I made up this attribution, so you may want to check on that) “This is the book we all need right now. If you’re longing for authentic community but aren’t sure where to begin, Shannan and this beautifully written book are the perfect guide. I truly believe when we stand together we stand a chance. I cheered along with every word.” —Korie Robertson, New York Times bestselling author “These are the days when we could all use a firm but gentle nudge to extend extra kindness to the people around us. Shannan reminds us to pay attention, look outside of ourselves, to lay aside our preconceived judgments, and stay put, bearing with each other, carrying each other‘s burdens, and finding Jesus at the center of it all.” —LaTasha Morrison, founder of Be the Bridge “Our nonstop consumer society seduces us into forsaking the ordinary. Even as believers, we are prone to aspire to do sexy ministry that garners headlines and warrants photo ops. But Shannan Martin helps us resist these impulses by calling the body to reclaim the sanctity and significance of ordinary places. Through personal stories, theology, and Scripture, she helps us discern God’s call upon our lives right where we are and illuminates why the most faithful ministry is oftentimes mundane, overlooked, and seemingly unimpressive. This book will help you thrive in your faith in practical and rooted ways!” —Dominique DuBois Gilliard, author of Rethinking Incarceration: Advocating for Justice That Restores “Sometimes when reading a book, I think ‘I’ll recommend this to that group’ or ‘this one goes go that community,’ but hand to heaven, I would put this book in every single pair of hands across ideology, camps, and tribes. Part storytelling, part prophetic, with dizzyingly wonderful writing, Shannan brings us back to the neighborhood, back to ordinary tables, back to a life we know in our deepest hearts is meant for us. I love her. I love this book.” —Jen Hatmaker, New York Times bestselling author of 7, For the Love, and Of Mess and Moxie

Excerpt: ... economy, purity, humility, liberality, perseverance and restfulness, which go a long way towards the production of a virtuous life. We may, I think, commence this branch of our study by observing the ECONOMY OF PLANT LIFE. The term economy is sometimes employed with reference to a system of rules and ceremonies, sometimes in regard to regular operations, as the economy of nature: but its most general use is that which concerns the management of affairs, the expenditure of money or material wealth, the nurturing and preservation of those qualities and materials which are of greatest importance with reference to the well-being of the person in its social or physical relations. One man who is of delicate constitution economises his strength, and to do so refrains from speaking in public, taking part in exciting debates, keeping late hours, spending much time in society. Another man of slender means economises his money by banking all he can spare, buying only such articles as are abso. lutely necessary, and adding to his little stock by further careful labours and judicious speculations. What we thus regard as a virtue and discretion in man we may witness also in the economy of nature, whether the provision be made by the plants themselves, or be regarded as a law which has been imposed upon them, which they are bound to obey. Begin with the root of plants, and, in order that your study may commence when the charms of the floral world are few and you have leisure for your work, take the hyacinth in your glass, or the crocus, tulip, snowdrop, among flowers properly so called, potato, yam, artichoke. onion, carrot among vegetables, and other plants of similar description famous for their bulbs or tubers. If asked why the onion or potato...

Caterpillars, Butterflies, Life & a real Hope Revolution THE WORLD HAS BEEN COCOONING; LET US EMERGE WITH HOPE. We have all lived through months of strange relationships with ourselves and the world around us. Virtual gatherings have become the norm, while the pain, uncertainty and injustice goes on. What will our new normal possibly become? What new work? How can we do our part to heal the world from whatever limited space we have? How can our United States truly be one nation under God with liberty and JUSTICE FOR ALL? “What might I do to help others during this global crisis? Is likely still your question as well as still mine. I will continue to offer my e-book for $2.99 with my hope that it can strengthen hope and courage in each of you and your children. We will need all we can get! If inspired, please join our Facebook group - Hope (For the Flowers) Revolution. Maybe we can inspire each other to build the better world that's possible. My hope for us is that, like our caterpillar heroes, Stripe and Yellow, we transform in the darkness of the cocoon to something new and totally unexpected. May we each find a way to use this time of darkness to light the way to justice and peace in the world. May we discover our own new beauty as we discover the beauty in our differences. May we each discover our purpose and live with passion this thing called life, while we still can. “How does one become a butterfly” Yellow asks pensively. “You must want to fly so much That you are willing to give up being a caterpillar.” I can't think of anything more transformational and radical than the change that happens when a lowly caterpillar worm becomes a flying beautiful butterfly. And it doesn't end with flying! They find their true purpose, to carry the pollen of love from one flower to another and receive in return the sweet nectar that keeps them alive. What wondrous exchange! Sharing is the answer to so much! I'm so grateful the story seems to reach every culture, and over 3 million have loved and shared the paper version in English and countless more in other languages for 50 years. May each of us and the world flourish after this strange dark cocoon of isolation.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ministry of Flowers: Being Some Thoughts Respecting Life, Suggested by the Book of Nature Every true lover of flowers must have been struck by the fact that these gems of earth are capable of imparting large stores of knowledge, if only the eyes are open to see, and the heart to receive them. We cannot understand the narrowness of mind which exists in some good people who love the sight of the flowers as they grow in copse and meadow, but cannot tolerate their use for charitable or Vreligious purposes. They allow wretched imitations to adorn their houses in the shape of wall-paper, and Chimney ornament they allow the sculptor to carve representations on the pillars of the sanctuary, and they do not protest against their symbolic use on stained glass or in the border of some painted panel, bearing the Paternoster or the Creed yet they will not admit the pure, innocent. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The debate over women's roles in the Southern Baptist Convention's conservative ascendance is often seen as secondary to theological and biblical concerns. Elizabeth Flowers argues, however, that for both moderate and conservative Baptist women--all of whom had much at stake--disagreements that touched on their familial roles and ecclesial authority have always been primary. And, in the turbulent postwar era, debate over their roles caused fierce internal controversy. While the legacy of race and civil rights lingered well into the 1990s, views on women's submission to male authority provided the most salient test by which moderates were identified and expelled in a process that led to significant splits in the Church. In Flowers's expansive history of Southern Baptist women, the "woman question" is integral to almost every area of Southern Baptist concern: hermeneutics, ecclesial polity, missionary work, church-state relations, and denominational history. Flowers's analysis, part of the expanding survey of America's religious and cultural landscape after World War II, points to the South's changing identity and connects religious and regional issues to the complicated relationship between race and gender during and after the civil rights movement. She also shows how feminism and shifting women's roles, behaviors, and practices played a significant part in debates that simmer among Baptists and evangelicals throughout the nation today.

Book excerpt: The story of how a church dying for more than two decades found its soul--and a new identity. In the foreword to this book, Tex Sample says: "The Christ who is Lord of the Church stands at the margins of the world. To forget either Christ as Lord or the Christ at the margins is to lose our ways as the church...In this faith-inspiring book, John Flowers and Karen Vannoy call the church again to the Christ who is Lord who appears at the margins of established, respectable life." Not Just a One-Night Stand is based on the ministry experience at Travis Park United Methodist Church in San Antonio, Texas. When you read the chapter titled "You're Under Arrest," you'll gain insight into the personality of Flowers and the ways in which he and Vannoy engage in ministry. Far more than a memoir, Not Just a One-Night Stand offers creative approaches to ministry with those who are marginalized.
