He fights a nation and in the process uncovers and destroys three decades of clandestine Iranian operation to control ex-patriots. After graduating from college, a young man, the son of a prominent construction tycoon from Colorado, decides to tour the world. While in Iran, they kidnap him. ... A man and his daughter too are kidnapped in Iran. They are the family of an executive at the World Health Organization in Denmark. ... Then in Denver, Colorado, the county's head of Construction and Permits is threatened and asked to pay his gambling debts. ... Finally, in California, a young Stanford graduate is offered an amazing opportunity at a startup, focusing on mass inoculation technology. These four events are tied together by way of a plan to attack the U.S. on their soil. Jason Caius, a Farsi and Arabic language teacher at the Monterey Defense Language Institute, with a secretive past and a godfather to the kidnapped college student, is called upon to help. Jason uses his extensive network of relationships cultivated over years of working in Iran, Iraq, and across Europe, to do whatever is necessary to help save his godson and quash the ill-fated terror plot. His ordeal takes him across the U.S. and Europe, through Turkey, culminating in Iran and Iraq, with action and plot twists in every town. Reviews ... "A fantastic debut novel ... " - The Guardian "After reading this book I looked at every expat with whom I worked with a new sense of curiosity and worry." "The possibility that this really happens is frightening to think about. I hope Jason is real! The world needs heroes like him. Great book. If you like Dan Brown's novels you'll also enjoy Max Boroumand" From The Author ... If you're a fan of Mark Greaney, John Grisham, James Patterson, Jack Higgins, Tom Clancy, David Baldacci, Lee Child's Jack Reacher, Robert Ludlum's Bourne and Janson, then you'll love this page-turning Jason Caius political thriller. Jason is a combination of stealthy CIA agent and university professor. He is smart in his ways and brutal when the occasion requires it. And, Max Boroumand is an author whose life experiences working and living in the world's most volatile areas, dealing with governments and large multi-national corporations have introduced him to many of the characters in his books. His attention to detail is uncanny and make his work sei non-fiction. The truths to which he was privy are frightening.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Lazonick explores how technological change has interacted with the organization of work, with major consequences for national competitiveness and industrial leadership. Looking at Britain, the United States, and Japan from the nineteenth century to the present, he explains changes in their status as industrial superpowers. Lazonick stresses the importance for industrial leadership of cooperative relations between employers and shop-floor workers. Such relations permit employers to use new technologies to their maximum potential, which in turn transforms the high fixed costs inherent in these technologies into low unit costs and large market shares. Cooperative relations can also lead employers to invest in the skills of workers themselves--skills that enable shop-floor workers to influence quality as well as quantity of production. To build cooperative shop-floor relations, successful employers have been willing to pay workers higher wages than they could have secured elsewhere in the economy. They have also been willing to offer workers long-term employment security. These policies, Lazonick argues, have not come at the expense of profits but rather have been a precondition for making profits. Focusing particularly on the role of labor-management relations in fostering "flexible mass production" in Japan since the 1950s, Lazonick criticizes those economists and politicians who, in the face of the Japanese challenge, would rely on free markets alone to restore the international competitiveness of industry in Britain and the United States.

In the process of their adventures they meet multitude weird and wonder characters such as The Ancient Marina, The Triplets, The Doctor, The Real Soldier and The Lost Grocer. They encounter various unique problems on their way which they solve the use of fantastic machines crafted by Bill. This classic story is accompanied by 16 incredible colour illustrations many black and white woodcuts by W. Heath Robinson an English cartoonist and illustrator, best known for drawings of ridiculously complicated machines – for achieving deceptively simple objectives. Such was (and is) his fame, that the term ‘Heath Robinson’ entered the English language during the First World War, as a description of any unnecessarily complex and implausible contrivance. This book was originally published in 1912 and was later televised as a series during the 1980s. We are republishing it here as part of our ‘Pook Press’ imprint, celebrating the golden age of illustration in children’s literature.

Book excerpt: Martin Daunton provides a clear and balanced view of the continuities and changes that occurred in the economic history of Britain from the Great Exhibition of 1851 to the Festival of Britain in 1951.In 1851, Britain was the dominant economic power in an increasingly global economy. The First World War marked a turning point, as globalization went into reverse and Britain shifted to 'insular capitalism'.Rather than emphasising the decline of the British economy, this book stresses modernity and the growth of new patterns of consumption in areas such as the service sector and the leisure industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1979, this book looks at the subject of childminding in Britain at the time it was written. It is based on a national survey that was commissioned by the Social Science Research Council and on action to help childminders funded by the Wates Foundation at Manchester University, UK. Previous to this study it was calculated that more than one million children under the age of five had a working mother, but little research had been done into childminders themselves. This book evaluates the number and nature of the childminders in Britain that were looking after the nation’s children in the 70s. It argues that parents have a right to choose to work if society can guarantee loving and skilled care for their children. However, the authors suggest that this was not the case at the time and state that childminders were in need of better governmental support.
