Sample Book Insights: #1 I worked with James’s parents to help them reduce his exposure to world issues and information. They removed all television sets and computers from the house, and limited his exposure to politics, jobs, and concerns after he went to bed. #2 When you simplify a child’s world, you prepare the way for positive change and growth. The pressures of too much are so universal that we begin to feel normal oddness. Our instinct to protect our children will be what motivates us to change. #3 The idea of a one-minute story seemed perfect to Canadian journalist Carl Honoré. He thought about unanswered emails and other things he needed to do, and realized that he had become a speedaholic. What was this saying and doing to his kids. #4 I had been working with children in Asia for years, and I had noticed that they were jumpy, nervous, and distrustful of new relationships. Many had post-traumatic stress disorder.

The third edition has been thoroughly updated throughout to reflect developments of the past decade, and it is the only text of its kind that provides a serious and respectful treatment of substance dualism. This edition also includes two new chapters on the nature of consciousness and the status of consciousness. Improved readability and clarity has been one important aim of the new edition. Throughout the text, author Jaegwon Kim allows readers to come to their own terms with the central problems of the mind. Book excerpt: Since the dawn of creation, Rhuna has held a secret deep beneath the Temple of Osiris - a malevolent force capable of bestowing immortality and unimaginable power to whomever possessed it. The Gods, rather than destroy all of Mythos to stop it, imprisoned the ancient evil and the one who created it. They separated Rhuna from the rest of Mythos leaving the land—and its people— to fade into legend. Kian’Huard and Ko’Resh, heirs to the House of Rhuna, happen upon a mysterious cave while out on a morning ride. The lure of the cave is beyond natural, compelling the brothers to enter. Too late, they realize their mistake and are trapped. Their only hope is a perilous venture deeper into the mountain. Plagued with danger, the journey pits brother against brother, until the final trial—the awakening of the Sem Lukos Resh. But the struggle does not end there. Driven by the darkness that possesses them, their conflict continues until only one brother remains. Centuries pass. The barriers separating Rhuna from the world fall. Long since presumed dead, Ko’Resh returns to Rhuna. Once more brother battles brother. One fights to save his world, the other to conquer it.
Book Synopsis Structure and the Metaphysics of Mind by : William Jaworski
Download or read book Structure and the Metaphysics of Mind written by William Jaworski and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-03-04 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structure and the Metaphysics of Mind is the first book to show how hylomorphism can be used to solve mind-body problems—persistent problems understanding how thought, feeling, perception, and other mental phenomena fit into the physical world described by our best science. Hylomorphism claims that structure is a basic ontological and explanatory principle. Some individuals, paradigmatically living things, consist of materials that are structured or organized in various ways. Those structures are responsible for individuals being the kinds of things they are, and having the kinds of powers or capacities they have. From a hylomorphic perspective, mind-body problems are byproducts of a worldview that rejects structure. Hylomorphic structure carves out distinctive individuals from the otherwise undifferentiated sea of matter and energy described by our best physics, and it confers on those individuals distinctive powers, including the powers to think, feel, and perceive. A worldview that rejects hylomorphic structure lacks a basic principle which distinguishes the parts of the physical universe that can think, feel, and perceive from those that can't, and without such a principle, the existence of those powers in the physical world can start to look inexplicable and mysterious. But if mental phenomena are structural phenomena, as hylomorphism claims, then they are uncontroversially part of the physical world, for on the hylomorphic view, structure is uncontroversially part of the physical world. Hylomorphism thus provides an elegant way of solving mind-body problems.

Book excerpt: Intracerebral interventions raise particular ethical issues. For instance, attempts at replacing lost or altered brain cells with the help of stem cells or the therapeutic application of Deep Brain Stimulation would have morally relevant implications. Many medically relevant questions and ethical concerns need to be clarified before these intracerebral interventions can become routine procedure: If the brain is conceived as the carrier of an individual's personality or of the self then operations on the brain can be seen as intrusions upon one's personality. The book addresses historical, philosophical, social and legal implications of these new developments in the neurosciences and aims at resolving some of the dilemmas that go hand in hand with »implanted minds«.

Book Synopsis Biology and Subjectivity by : Miguel García-Valdecasas
Download or read book Biology and Subjectivity written by Miguel García-Valdecasas and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-26 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some may consider that the language and concepts of philosophy will eventually be superseded by those of neuroscience. This book questions such a naïve assumption and through a variety of perspectives and traditions, the authors show the possible contributions of philosophy to non-reductive forms of neuroscientific research. Drawing from the full range and depth of philosophical thought, from hylomorphism to ethics, by way of dynamical systems, enactivism and value theory, amongst other topics, this edited work promotes a rich form of interdisciplinary exchange. Chapters explore the analytic, phenomenological and pragmatic traditions of philosophy, and most share a common basis in the Aristotelian tradition. Contributions address one or more aspects of subjectivity in relation to science, such as the meaning and scope of naturalism and the place of consciousness in nature, or the relation between intentionality, teleology, and causality. Readers may further explore the nature of life and its relation to mind and then the role of value in mind and nature. This book shows how philosophy might contribute to real explanatory progress in science while remaining faithful to the full complexity of the phenomena of life and mind. It will be of interest to both philosophers and neuroscientists, as well as those engaged in interdisciplinary cooperation between philosophy and science.
