Book excerpt: Dostoevsky called George Sand 'one of us, a Russian idealist of the 1840 generation', and The Miller of Angibault (1845) is Sand's 'arch-socialist' novel, according to the writer herself. But it is a rural socialism which makes the novel unique. Rejected by its original publisher as too violent an attack on property, The Miller of Angibault actually satirizes the utopian ideals of Paris reformers who try to put their naive plans into action among the country folk of Sand's native Berry. The novel reflects both the ebullient political movements of its period and the despairing conviction that the Revolution of 1789 had changed nothing. Yet it is also a love story, charged with Sand's self-effacing humour and filled with gentle lyricism.

When each shall labor for all, and all for each, how light will be the toil, how fair our life!" "Yes, my profession, in that case, would be one of the most elegant!" said the miller, with a smile of quick intelligence. "Grain is the noblest of plants; bread the purest of food. My function might well deserve some esteem, and on holidays a crown of wheat-cars and bluebells might be wreathed around poor Grand, -Louise, to whom no one pays any attention now; but what would you have? In these days of ours, as M. Bricolin says, I am only a mercenary in his employ, and he says of me; 'A man like him think of mv daughter! A wretch who grinds the grain, when it is I who sow the sepo and possess the earth!' A fine difference, nevertheless! My hands are cleaner than his are with turning over manure; that is all. So now, my boy, the work is done, let us make haste with the soup. I will warrant you will think it better than in the morning, though it should be ten times as sa

Book excerpt: One of the most notable novelists of the Romantic era, Amantine Lucile Aurore Dupin, best known by her pen name George Sand, achieved fame for her ‘rustic’ novels, drawing inspiration from her lifelong love of the countryside and sympathy for the poor. The familiar theme of her work was love transcending the obstacles of convention and class, all set against the backdrop of her beloved Berry countryside. Book Synopsis Gut, Brain, and Environment in Nineteenth-Century French Literature and Medicine by : Manon Mathias

This book was released on 2024-04-30 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gut, Brain, and Environment in Nineteenth-Century French Literature and Medicine offers a new way of conceptualizing food in literature: not as social or cultural symbol but as an agent within a network of relationships between body and mind and between humans and environment. By analysing gastrointestinal health in medical, literary, and philosophical texts, this volume rethinks the intersections between literature and health in the nineteenth century and triggers new debates about France’s relationship with food. Of relevance to scholars of literature and to historians and sociologists of science, food, and medicine, it will provide ideal reading for students of French Literature and Culture, History, Cultural Studies, and History of Science and Medicine, Literature and Science, Food Studies, and the Medical Humanities. Readers will be introduced to new ways of approaching digestion in this period and will gain appreciation of the powerful resources offered by nineteenth-century French writing in understanding the nature of connections between gut, mind, and environment and the impact of these connections on our status as human beings.
Book Synopsis Acts of Modernity by : David Buchanan
Download or read book Acts of Modernity written by David Buchanan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-01 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Acts of Modernity, David Buchanan reads nineteenth-century historical novels from Scotland, America, France, and Canada as instances of modern discourse reflective of community concerns and methods that were transatlantic in scope. Following on revolutionary events at home and abroad, the unique combination of history and romance initiated by Walter Scott’s Waverley (1814) furthered interest in the transition to and depiction of the nation-state. Established and lesser-known novelists reinterpreted the genre to describe the impact of modernization and to propose coping mechanisms, according to interests and circumstances. Besides analysis of the chronotopic representation of modernity within and between national contexts, Buchanan considers how remediation enabled diverse communities to encounter popular historical novels in upmarket and downmarket forms over the course of the century. He pays attention to the way communication practices are embedded within and constitutive of the social lives of readers, and more specifically, to how cultural producers adapted the historical novel to dynamic communication situations. In these ways, Acts of Modernity investigates how the historical novel was repeatedly reinvented to effectively communicate the consequences of modernity as problem-solutions of relevance to people on both sides of the Atlantic.
