Book Synopsis Toward the Millennium by : Peter Schäfer
Download or read book Toward the Millennium written by Peter Schäfer and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-09-24 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of 16 articles represents a selection of the papers delivered in the course of a seminar (1995-1996) at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton and its concluding joint symposium held at the Institute and Princeton University. Wide-ranging in scope, the volume covers messianic expectations from biblical times up to modern and contemporaneous adaptations, whereby the focus lies on the messianic concept within Judaism: diversity and variety of messianic expectations in antiquity; messianic movements at the time of the Crusades and around the fifth millennium (1240); the 'Pseudo'-Messiah Sabbatai Avi in the early modern period; the philosophers Hermann Cohen, Franz Rosenzweig and Walter Benjamin with respect to their thinking about messianism as well as the Lubavitch movement. Also included are investigations on pagan Graeco-Roman writings and messianic strands in the medieval and baroque Christian context. The section on the modern period contains contributions dealing with the Ahmaddiyya movement in India, messianic currents in the socio-political culture of the Weimar Republic as well as certain messianic aspects in the very recent so-called Branch Davidian community in Waco, Texas. The broad spectrum of stimulating analyses provides a fresh re-evaluation of an apparently timeless phenomenon.

Book excerpt: From Orhon inscriptions to Orhan Pamuk, the story of Turkish literature from the eighth century A.D. to the present day is rich and complex, full of firm traditions and daring transformations. Spanning a wide geographic range from Outer Mongolia and the environs of China through the Middle East all the way to Europe, the history of Turkish literature embraces a multitude of traditions and influences. All have left their imprint on the distinctive amalgam that is uniquely Turkish. Always receptive to the nurturing values, aesthetic tastes, and literary penchants of diverse civilizations, Turkish culture succeeded in evolving a sui generis personality. It clung to its own established traits, yet it was flexible enough to welcome innovations—and even revolutionary change. A Millennium of Turkish Literature tells the story of how literature evolved and grew in stature on the Turkish mainland over the course of a thousand years. The book features numerous poems and extracts in fluid translations by Halman and others. This volume provides a concise and captivating introduction to Turkish literature and, with selections from its extensive “Suggested Reading” section, serves as an invaluable guide to Turkish literature for course adoption.

Book Synopsis A Message for the Millennium by : K. Martin-Kuri
Download or read book A Message for the Millennium written by K. Martin-Kuri and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As we prepare ourselves for the next century, we will either expand our freedom in such a way that we can cooperate with heavenly thought or we will lose our identities by becoming automatic response mechanisms for the rebellious forces opposing God." --K. Martin-Kuri K. Martin-Kuri has a special connection to the realms of heaven. Now, in A Message for the Millennium, she is compelled to remind us that we are living in troubled times, and that we are being called to make a critical choice. Neglect of our children, political and personal terrorism, random and calculated violence, addictions, deadly new diseases, and other evils have brought us to the edge of the abyss. As a new millennium approaches, she warns, we must either gather ourselves to soar into a better future or stumble and fall to the depths. In A Message for the Millennium, Martin-Kuri translates into actual living practices the things we can do to avoid disaster. She illumines the path of transformation that can allow our guardian angels to work more effectively in our lives and lead to change on a personal and cosmic level. Every time we think a negative thought or commit an act of jealousy, greed, or hatred, we are holding the angels at bay. The angels want to help us, but they are powerless, except in extreme cases, if we do not create an atmosphere of love and kindness in which they can intercede on our behalf. When God gave us free will, he gave us the opportunity to determine our fate. Only by hearing the messages from the angels can we come closer to God. Martin-Kuri shares with us special techniques for taming our inner dragons and defusing the powerful negative energies of society. She revealshow, through prayer and helping others, we can help ourselves and save our planet. A Message for the Millennium is a thought-provoking book that asks and answers tough questions. It calls upon us to begin the hard work that can usher in an era of good will. Most important, it tells us what each of us must do in our daily lives. The choice is ours. Time is running out. The angels are calling. Will we hear their message? Will we make the right choice?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ancient Africans, perhaps around 5500 BC, established a tradition based upon truth, goodness, beauty, and other immaterial and intangible aspects of things of worth. Believing all of God’s creations were forever linked, they focused on having good relations with and behaviors toward fellow human beings and with nature – both for the purpose of reaching a heaven afterlife. Out of these concepts arose the sense of community, including the practice of no person being left behind. Echoes of Ancient African Values discusses who Ancient Africans were as a people; their genius and creative ways of thinking; their philosophical and spiritual foundations; and their world shaping achievements. Unfortunately, peoples throughout the world have failed to realize or acknowledge the fact that Ancient Africans have produced the most brilliance civilization and culture the world has ever known. This applies whether the measure is by significance, greatness, or numbers. The fashioning of such brilliance inside high morals not only transcended space and time but also designed sublime echoes. A major premise of this book is that these echoes were extremely instrumental in enabling Ancient African slaves to survive their hellish situation as well as having ongoingly contributed to the recovery of Black Americans from the effects of slavery. Numerous examples are given. Otherwise, what is stressed to all peoples in the world is that Ancient African Values contain workable answers for solving every type of problem concerning humanity.

Download or read book The Inner Circle written by Mari Jungstedt and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2008-11-25 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Inner Circle opens with an international group of young archeology students sweating on a dig on the island of Gotland, uncovering a Viking fortification dating back over a millennium. They are a fun-loving lot, partying together every night, but the good vibe turns to horror when one of them, twenty-one-year-old Martina Flochten, disappears. Her body is found a short while later, naked, bled out, and hanging from a tree. Her injuries indicate that she is the victim of a ritual killing. Inspector Anders Knutas investigates Martina's acquaintances. Who was the mysterious lover she was supposed to have been meeting in secret and whom none of her fellow archaeologists have actually seen? What do the marks on Martina's body signify? Is there possibly a connection between Martina's death and the recent and unsolved brutal beheading of a Gotland pony? The pony was also bled out, and its head was missing---until it appears mounted on a stick outside the next victim's house. Inspector Knutas and his team work feverishly to catch the killer, but before long there are more victims, all of whom have been killed and mutilated the same way. Mari Jungstedt integrates a healthy dose of Scandinavian mythology in this installment of her critically acclaimed series, and also addresses current issues on Gotland, while keeping up a fast-paced and intricate plot as Knutas closes in on the killer and the secret that connects the victims. This is Swedish crime fiction at its best: dark, atmospheric, and character-driven.
