Book excerpt: This collection of 16 articles represents a selection of the papers delivered in the course of a seminar (1995-1996) at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton and its concluding joint symposium held at the Institute and Princeton University. Wide-ranging in scope, the volume covers messianic expectations from biblical times up to modern and contemporaneous adaptations, whereby the focus lies on the messianic concept within Judaism: diversity and variety of messianic expectations in antiquity; messianic movements at the time of the Crusades and around the fifth millennium (1240); the 'Pseudo'-Messiah Sabbatai Avi in the early modern period; the philosophers Hermann Cohen, Franz Rosenzweig and Walter Benjamin with respect to their thinking about messianism as well as the Lubavitch movement. Also included are investigations on pagan Graeco-Roman writings and messianic strands in the medieval and baroque Christian context. The section on the modern period contains contributions dealing with the Ahmaddiyya movement in India, messianic currents in the socio-political culture of the Weimar Republic as well as certain messianic aspects in the very recent so-called Branch Davidian community in Waco, Texas. The broad spectrum of stimulating analyses provides a fresh re-evaluation of an apparently timeless phenomenon.

The chapters reflect the diversity of current research topics in psychology, where old boundaries have become obsolete and subdivisions from the past merge to form new objects of study. Volume 1 addresses cognitive, biological, and health perspectives. It includes sections on the neural mechanisms underlying psychological processes; the core areas in experimental psychology, perception, attention, learning, and memory; the multiple aspects of psychological health; the interaction between cognitive and emotional processes; and higher cognitive processes with special focus on decision-making and language. Volume 2 deals with social, developmental, and clinical perspectives. The sections highlight human development across the life span; basic and applied issues in personality, emotion, and clinical psychology; social psychology, ranging from experimental work through social constructivism; and gender.

Book excerpt: "As we prepare ourselves for the next century, we will either expand our freedom in such a way that we can cooperate with heavenly thought or we will lose our identities by becoming automatic response mechanisms for the rebellious forces opposing God." --K. Martin-Kuri K. Martin-Kuri has a special connection to the realms of heaven. Now, in A Message for the Millennium, she is compelled to remind us that we are living in troubled times, and that we are being called to make a critical choice. Neglect of our children, political and personal terrorism, random and calculated violence, addictions, deadly new diseases, and other evils have brought us to the edge of the abyss. As a new millennium approaches, she warns, we must either gather ourselves to soar into a better future or stumble and fall to the depths. In A Message for the Millennium, Martin-Kuri translates into actual living practices the things we can do to avoid disaster. She illumines the path of transformation that can allow our guardian angels to work more effectively in our lives and lead to change on a personal and cosmic level. Every time we think a negative thought or commit an act of jealousy, greed, or hatred, we are holding the angels at bay. The angels want to help us, but they are powerless, except in extreme cases, if we do not create an atmosphere of love and kindness in which they can intercede on our behalf. When God gave us free will, he gave us the opportunity to determine our fate. Only by hearing the messages from the angels can we come closer to God. Martin-Kuri shares with us special techniques for taming our inner dragons and defusing the powerful negative energies of society. She revealshow, through prayer and helping others, we can help ourselves and save our planet. A Message for the Millennium is a thought-provoking book that asks and answers tough questions. It calls upon us to begin the hard work that can usher in an era of good will. Most important, it tells us what each of us must do in our daily lives. The choice is ours. Time is running out. The angels are calling. Will we hear their message? Will we make the right choice?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each of us has felt the energy shift as the planet transitions into the fifth dimension. We have felt time speed up and felt energies that are at times so chaotic and unpredictable that we have been thrown off our usual course. Some of us have been rocked to our very core. We are asking ourselves “what is this and why is this happening?” We each have chosen to come to earth during this time of great transition. We are all here sharing our lives with each other, helping Mother Earth move into the Golden Age, the spiritual Age of Aquarius. This transition will complete on the date that the Mayan civilization predicted some 26,000 years ago, December 21st, 2012. There is much work to be done as we realize the need for the shift that must occur in our personal lives so that we can be in sync with the new fifth dimensional energy on this planet. As our world resets itself, so too must we reset ourselves. What this means to each of us is that it is time to understand the meaning of how to live more fully in the fifth dimension. Each of us must identify where we currently stand and where we need to go in order to experience the wonderment of fifth dimensional living. Why? Many of us may be existing as a two or a three dimensional person. The energies that sustain those dimensions no longer exist on this planet. So, the old ways of thinking or operating that produced success at one time no longer exist. It is now necessary for us, if we are to exist in harmony with our planet, to transition as well. If we choose not to transition, then frustration and anger will become paramount in our lives. The choice is up to us. To live in the fifth dimension is not only to experience the energy of magic and miracles but to learn that we can create all the perfection we desire in our lives by simply shifting our thinking into fifth dimensional thinking. We are able to see the perfection where formerly we saw the illusion of imperfection. This new vantage point allows us to become the center of our own reality and easily navigate through difficult individuals and challenging events while maintaining a state of balance and harmony. We are then able to turn possibilities into probabilities and probabilities into actualities! This journey begins with describing and identifying all of the unseen, but certainly not unfelt, influences in our lives that have been given to each of us to help us live our life on earth in the best and easiest manner possible. Each reader will be able to identify their birthright gift as well as the other gifts available to tap into and expand one’s energy thereby allowing this innate knowledge to grow and develop. All of the necessary techniques and tools are explained in detail in this book so that you can easily make the transition from your current dimension into the fifth dimension, allowing you to create a new future. You are able to learn and make friends with each of your bodies of consciousness and their respective inner child and together you begin a journey of healing. You, as parent of these inner children, learn how to set the stage and the rules so that everyone is playing by the same playbook. You learn that you may win as a team or you may lose as a team, but you are all on the same team working together to achieve that balance that allows you to maintain your newly found center. By removing fears one by one, each of us can transition from a place of fear into a place of love, learning to live from the heart. As we work towards this goal, we isolate and identify the negative emotions that have been growing and harvesting within. These negative emotions equate disease. This book is your guide to help acknowledge these fears, recognize and release them one by one creating a new you, a lighter you. We then experience a new energy, a more evolved energy, a higher vibrating energy, as we invite the energy of excellent health and balance into our bodies. It is here that

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Bellinzoni has written a thoughtful and challenging book which must be taken seriously by all those who take the continued influence of Christianity for granted. A part of this challenge is to acknowledge the discrediting of central elements of the gospel history. But the other challenge, just as important, is to identify those parts of that tradition which might be reformulated for a future in which the role of Christianity in ethics, society, and culture is greatly diminished.--R. Joseph Hoffmann, Chair, Committee for the Scientific Examination of Religion at the Center for Inquiry; Professor of Religion Emeritus, Wells CollegeChristianity has endured for two thousand years, weathering the challenges of clerical corruption, religious wars, internal schism, and scientific criticism. Today, however, there is increasing evidence that institutional Christianity is succumbing to the growing secularism of contemporary society. Both church attendance and the number of clergy have noticeably declined. Will Christianity survive for another thousand years, or even a hundred years? In this probing assessment of the state of Christianity, biblical scholar Arthur J. Bellinzoni boldly asserts that Christianity must break with the past and offer a new vision of the future if it hopes to survive. Addressing four issues of central concern, Bellinzoni advocates a radical rethinking of the Christian message. First, he suggests that the God concept must move beyond obsolete notions of a personal God and take its inspiration from such diverse sources as science, Taoism, Moses, Thomas Jefferson, and Martin Buber. Second, Bellinzoni urges a more sophisticated approach to the Bible, one that values its timeless elements but is not afraid to discard its many antiquated features. Third, he recommends a new emphasis on Jesus' social ethic, arguing that this could lead to a dramatic redistribution of the world's wealth and greater respect for the planet. Fourth, Bellinzoni criticizes the persistence of obsolete myth in Christianity, demonstrating that, without its mythical embellishments, Christianity still offers a relevant understanding of the meaning of human existence.A work of erudition that is also completely accessible to the lay reader, The Future of Christianity provides a stimulating critique that forward-thinking Christians will welcome.Arthur J. Bellinzoni (Aurora, NY) is professor of religion emeritus at Wells College; the author of The Future of Christianity: Can It Survive?; The Old Testament: An Introduction to Biblical Scholarship; The Sayings of Jesus in the Writings of Justin Martyr; and the editor of The Two Source Hypothesis and The Influence of the Gospel of Saint Matthew on Christian Literature Before Saint Irenaeus.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An illuminating story of a Sufi community that sought the revelation of God. In the Afghan highlands of the sixteenth century, the messianic community known as the Roshaniyya not only desired to find God’s word and to abide by it but also attempted to practice God’s word and to develop techniques of language intended to render their own tongues as the organs of continuous revelation. As their critics would contend, however, the Roshaniyya attempted to make language do something that language should not do—infuse the semiotic with the divine. Their story thus ends in a tower of skulls, the proliferation of heresiographies that detailed the sins of the Roshaniyya, and new formations of “Afghan” identity. In Singing with the Mountains, William E. B. Sherman finds something extraordinary about the Roshaniyya, not least because the first known literary use of vernacular Pashto occurs in an eclectic, Roshani imitation of the Qur’an. The story of the Roshaniyya exemplifies a religious culture of linguistic experimentation. In the example of the Roshaniyya, we discover a set of questions and anxieties about the capacities of language that pervaded Sufi orders, imperial courts, groups of wandering ascetics, and scholastic networks throughout Central and South Asia. In telling this tale, Sherman asks the following questions: How can we make language shimmer with divine truth? How can letters grant sovereign power and form new “ethnic” identities and ways of belonging? How can rhyme bend our conceptions of time so that the prophetic past comes to inhabit the now of our collective moment? By analyzing the ways in which the Roshaniyya answered these types of questions—and the ways in which their answers were eventually rejected as heresies—this book offers new insight into the imaginations of religious actors in the late medieval and early modern Persianate worlds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemplative experience is central to Hindu yoga traditions, Buddhist meditation practices, and Catholic mystical theology, and, despite doctrinal differences, it expresses itself in suggestively similar meditative landmarks in each of these three meditative systems. In Yoga, Meditation and Mysticism, Kenneth Rose shifts the dominant focus of contemporary religious studies away from tradition-specific studies of individual religious traditions, communities, and practices to examine the 'contemplative universals' that arise globally in meditative experience. Through a comparative exploration of the itineraries detailed in the contemplative manuals of Theravada Buddhism, Patañjalian Yoga, and Catholic mystical theology, Rose identifies in each tradition a moment of sharply focused awareness that marks the threshold between immersion in mundane consciousness and contemplative insight. As concentration deepens, the meditator steps through this threshold onto a globally shared contemplative itinerary, which leads through a series of virtually identical stages to mental stillness and insight. Rose argues that these contemplative universals, familiar to experienced contemplatives in multiple traditions, point to a common spiritual, mental, and biological heritage. Pioneering the exploration of contemplative practice and experience with a comparative perspective that ranges over multiple religious traditions, religious studies, philosophy, neuroscience, and the cognitive science of religion, this book is a landmark contribution to the fields of contemplative practice and religious studies.
