Book excerpt: In this fascinating account, leading Australian military historians tackle 10 of the most enduring historical zombies, or national myths, that have staggered their way through the halls of military history for more than 200 years. From Aboriginal resistance and invasion to Australia’s recent involvement in East Timor, this record disproves the incorrectly memorialized and so-called gallant deeds of past Australian servicemen. Provocative and opinionated, this record attempts to correct the historical record.

Book excerpt: In this collection of new essays from the Liminal & Pantera Press Nonfiction Prize longlist, First Nations writers and writers of colour bend and shift boundaries, query the past and envision new futures. They ask: How do we write or hold our former selves, our ancestries? How does where we come from connect to where we are headed? How do we tell the stories of those who have been diminished or ignored in the writing of history? How do we do justice to the lives they lived, or to the people they were? From the intricacies of trans becoming, to violences inflicted on stateless peoples, to complex inheritances and the intertwining of tradition, politics and place, this prescient collection challenges singular narratives about the past, offering testimony and prophecy alike. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this 10th volume of the economic history of colonial NSW, the matter of population growth is reviewed, with population gains coming from favorable economic drivers and economic cycles, exploration, immigration, natural increase and British investment. The historical approach to Statistical Data gathering, its origins and reliability, is outlined as are the statistics used and their interpretation. The early musters (of convicts) is discussed together with commentary on the supporting datas derived from the numbers of convicts 'on the store'. With the Aboriginal economy outperforming the white colony from 1788 to the early 1820s, the operation of the Aboriginal economy is also discussed and the circumstances of its depopulation. Adding to the population history is a statement that traditional reporting of the history is: *Britain settled the continent for ;'strategic' advantages and to find a source of raw materials for its industries, as well as being an outlet for its trading and a takeover of local resources under its expanding economic system. *Economic development took place in their new colony, beneficial mainly to British interests including, industry, trade, insurance and investment. As important as trade and investment became to the new colony, the main aspect of the population history is the transfer of human capital in the form of over 160,000 convicted persons under a transportation program from the United Kingdom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Any economic history written in the 21st century of colonial Australia, will highlight the economic gains made by Governor Macquarie, especially in the broad planning approach to efficiently and effectively use convict labour for economic improvement in the colony. Whilst Macquarie tried to make the colony safe and attractive to investors and entrepreneurs, he used the various Government business enterprises, such as the Lumber and Timber Yards, the Stone Quarry and the naval yard, to supplement the gains already accomplished by the Government Farms and the Government Store (the Commissariat) to underpin outstanding economic growth and impressive GDP in the colonial economy. The various aspects of the colonial economy make interesting reading not to mention the comparison of the Aboriginal economy of 1788 with the white economy. The study is a different approach to the colonial economy and is the first of an impressive series of studies of each of the aspects of the economy between 1788 and 1835.

The Hawkesbury district in Sydney¿s west was once home to many Australians and in the early 19th century had the second highest population in the colony. In the first few decades of the 1800s the Hawkesbury region was one of the major settlements alongside Sydney and Parramatta. Indeed many Australians can trace their origins (both convict and free) to this district. In the Hawkesbury history suburbs extending from Bilpin, Colo, Ebenezer, Kurrajong, Mount Tomah, Richmond, Windsor and Wiseman¿s Ferry are represented in a wide range of black and white photographs. The book includes the historic areas of Cattai, Riverstone, Londonderry and Yarramundi. With over 190 rare and interesting photographs it is a fascinating overview of the history of the area from Aboriginal to modern times.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Known affectionately as ‘Padres’, chaplains have been integral to the Australian Army for a century. From the legendary William ‘Fighting Mac’ McKenzie, whose friendships with diggers in the trenches of Gallipoli and France made him a national figure in 1918, to Harold Wardale-Greenwood, who died caring for the sick while a POW on the brutal Sandakan ‘death march’ in July 1945, this book assesses the contribution of Australian Army chaplains in conflicts and peacekeeping missions, in barracks and among service families. Drawing on a wealth of original archival material and little known published sources, Captains of the Soul represents the first comprehensive account of Australian Army chaplains. It surveys their changing role and experience from the Great War of 1914–18 to the recent conflict in Afghanistan; charts the evolution of the Royal Australian Army Chaplains’ Department across its first century; and addresses the significance of Army chaplaincy for Australia’s military, religious and cultural history. It is a story of personal conviction and selfless devotion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook examines key aspects of the development of the global history of warfare and the changing patterns of warfare over time. Although scholarship has long eschewed a chronological narrative of the evolution of warfare that privileges the Western experience, global histories of warfare have had difficulty avoiding an overemphasis on the West. The present volume is a collection of themes rather than a history per se; it provides important perspectives on the emergence of warfare as a global historical experience from the ancient past to the present day. Drawing together numerous experts, it tells a broader, more inclusive story of the global, human experience with wars and warfare. The 35 cahtpers are organised in eight thematic parts: Part I: Origins of Warfare Part II: Polities and Armed Forces in the Pre-Modern Era Part III: Steppe Nomads of Eurasia Part IV: Naval Warfare and Piracy in the Pre-Industrial World Part V: The Impact of Gunpowder Part VI: Transition from Industrial to Total War Part VII: Wars of Decolonisation and Cold War Part VIII: Postmodern/New Wars These Parts offer an overview of the global experience of warfare to help readers understand how the wars and the militaries we see today have been shaped by historical developments across the globe. This handbook will be of great interest to students of military history, naval history, strategic studies and world history in general.
