Book excerpt: THE USA TODAY BESTSELLER Heather Webber's Midnight at the Blackbird Cafe is a captivating blend of magical realism, heartwarming romance, and small-town Southern charm. Nestled in the mountain shadows of Alabama lies the little town of Wicklow. It is here that Anna Kate has returned to bury her beloved Granny Zee, owner of the Blackbird Café. It was supposed to be a quick trip to close the café and settle her grandmother’s estate, but despite her best intentions to avoid forming ties or even getting to know her father’s side of the family, Anna Kate finds herself inexplicably drawn to the quirky Southern town her mother ran away from so many years ago, and the mysterious blackbird pie everybody can’t stop talking about. As the truth about her past slowly becomes clear, Anna Kate will need to decide if this lone blackbird will finally be able to take her broken wings and fly. Book excerpt: The lunatic cafe: The zombie-raising business gets slow in December, so Anita Blake is starting to see some oddball cases. She's got a neatly typed list of eight missing lycanthropes given to her by Marcus, the leader of the local werewolf pack, who wants her to find them. The trouble is, Anita's occasionally furry boyfriend Richard is locked in a power struggle with Marcus. Jean-Claude, master vampire of the city and Anita's other love interest, is getting jealous as well. To top it off, Anita has to solve some horrific murders and keep her bounty-hunting friend Edward from killing Richard and Jean-Claude. Bloody bones: When Anita Blake's boss at Animators, Inc., informs her that she's expected to raise 300-year-old zombies from a field of jumbled bones just to settle a land dispute, she's understandably annoyed. But as soon as she arrives in Branson, Missouri, to do the deed, the job gets more interesting. A psychotic sword-wielding vampire starts committing multiple murders in the area, and Anita must call on Jean-Claude, her powerful fanged suitor, for help. As always, Anita prevails over the undead, keeping Jean-Claude at arm's length, clearing the cemetery land of an ancient enchantment, and nailing the vampiric killer in one fell swoop. The killing dance: Anita Blake, vampire hunter, is now herself a hunted woman. Who put the $500,000 price on her head--a man or a monster? It's not just her own skin she needs to save; the rivalry between her werewolf boyfriend, Richard, and Marcus, the other alpha werewolf in his pack, has come to full boil. And there's always Jean-Claude, the vampire who's been waiting for just the right moment to slip inside Anita's head and heart.

Book excerpt: “If McBride is trying to prove—that if you change one life, you change the world—she succeeds magnificently.”—Booklist From the author of the acclaimed novel We Are Called to Rise comes a “jewel of a novel” (BookPage) about four vivid and complicated women in Las Vegas whose lives become connected by secrets, courage, tragedies, and small acts of kindness. Fun-loving and rebellious, twenty-one-year-old June Stein abandons the safe world of her New Jersey childhood for edgy 1950s Las Vegas. For the next 60 years, June will dare to live boldly. She will upend conventions, risk her heart and her life, rear a child, lose a child, love more than one man, and stand up for more than one woman. June’s story will intertwine with those of three unlikely strangers: a one-time mail order bride from the Philippines, a high school music teacher, and a young mother from Mexico working as a hotel maid. Knit together around June’s explosive secret, they forge a future that none of them foresee. This jubilant, compassionate novel explores the unexpected ways that life connects us, changes us, and even perfects us. A powerful story of lust and of hope, of redemption and of compassion, In the Midnight Room is a smart, sagacious novel about womanhood, family bonds, and how we live in America now.

Book excerpt: Written like a detective story, this book explores the spirituality of one of the world's most beloved artists, Vincent van Gogh, through one of Western art's most mysterious paintings, The Night Café. Done in almost garish colors, the work depicts a late night in a café serving a poorer element of society, and Van Gogh himself saw both destructive forces and gaiety in the work. With author Cliff Edwards, we follow a trail of clues from a Yale art gallery to a neighborhood in Arles, from a novel by Émile Zola to a largely forgotten image of Jesus that hung in Van Gogh's bedroom. We enter the imagination of Van Gogh through the books he read, the art he admired, and the people with whom he identified, and arrive at startling conclusions that include a new and deeply spiritual understanding of a café after midnight and the "night prowlers" who inhabit it.

Book excerpt: A high-intensity light into the dark, dangerous corners of international drug trafficking—with a bizarre twist The rampant avarice and treachery in New York, Leningrad, Romania, and Colombia spill over from both sides of the law—with another bizarre twist. In Condemned, Colombian drug lords, Russian thugs, Mafia soldiers, street junkies, law enforcement, rampant corruption, behind-the-scenes courtroom intrigue, jail cells, luxury cars, millions in cash, and sex for drugs spin together in a tight vortex that reveals today’s society repeating what President Franklin Roosevelt described as the “stupendous blunder” of Prohibition. Laws intended to eliminate or control undesirable substances have actually created an entire industry of criminality, corruption, and violence, permeating the very fibers of everyday life.

Book excerpt: Alaska's fermented legacy retains the fiercely independent spirit that propelled the state's beer drinkers through the gold rush and sustained them through Prohibition. Today, craft brewers produce outstanding suds in some of the harshest and most remote locations on the planet. And while the beer scene in Alaska has roots that trace back to days when spirits had to have "medicinal, mechanical, and scientific purposes," the contemporary crop of breweries can thank industry pioneers like the Alaskan Brewing Company for staying on the cutting edge of beer-making technology. Join beer columnist and historian Bill Howell on an exploration through this hop-filled history of the Last Frontier.

Book excerpt: was so easy to make, Clifford thought of the strange dramas that had their beginnings in the Grand Alcazar and establishments of its kind. Thus much had the dancing craze, though now receded from its earliest frenzy, and the practice of dining and eating midnight suppers in the showy restaurants, achieved: it had brought all sorts of persons, so long as they were well dressed, under the same roof and had set them down at the same or adjoining tables. Hardly since time began had that important requisite of great drama been so nearly perfect as in these restaurants—for people of different ideas and interests and moral standards to meet naturally upon a common ground.... A little man, swart of face, his mustache tightly waxed, and in the smartest evening dress that convention permits the male, paused and spoke to Clifford—a gentleman whom most of the patrons of the place knew, if they knew him at all, as Monsieur Le Bain. Though the master of this ornate pleasure palace, he spoke obsequiously....FROM THE BOOKS.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea for this novel was conceived in the spring of 1996, at Casa Bonita Restaurant in Denver, Colorado; the title derives from a political tract circulating in that city at that time titled The Fourth Declaration of the Jungle. The forgotten heart of the homeland is a line from that tract. Casa Bonita---also known to fans of TV's South Park as Cartman's favorite restaurant---occupies a large cavernous space decorated to look like a Mexican village, with grotto-like nooks in the walls for a cozier dining experience and high cliffs from which athletic young people dive into limpid turquoise pools. I was having lunch there with my friend Diana, the first time I had been in that place. What struck me as more than a coincidence was its remarkable similarity to a place I had dreamed of, just days earlier. So it came as no surprise when she said: Douglas, we need to come up with something that'll make us some money...a project we can work on together. What did she have in mind? I asked, though an idea was already burbling around in my brain. Since we both did some writing, why not co-author a book? Hey, if Larry McMurtry and Diana Osana can do it, why not us? What kind of book? And sitting there in the warm light of tiki torches, working on a plate of enchiladas, I had a sudden inspiration. In my younger days I had enjoyed travels in Mexico. Also, I'm a history buff, and have always been interested in the era of the Mexican Revolution. And as the unrest that spurred the 1910 revolution persisted up until our own time, the conflict was still relevant in the year 1996. Many volumes have been written on the subject; but---what if a person from our time (a woman, in our case) could travel back into the past and experience it first-hand. It would be the story of a young woman, an investigative journalist, who travels into Mexico in search of the truth, and finds more than she bargained for. It would be a historical romance/science-fantasy epic, part recorded history and part fiction. The deal we agreed upon went like this: I would research and write the book; she would give me the woman's point of view, what a woman would think and feel and how she would react in any given situation; so that whenever a woman speaks in this novel, it comes from a woman's mouth. Once we had agreed on the subject matter for our opus, we paid a visit to the Tattered Cover Bookstore, where Diana purchased two volumes, John Womack, Jr.'s Zapata and the Mexican Revolution and Pancho Villa the Mexican Centaur, by Oren Arnold; these books would be my main source of information about Zapata and Villa. I also made extensive use of The Wind that Swept Mexico and 500 anos del Pueblo Chicano, a pictorial history, to get more of an overview and a flavor of the era. In time I read entries from the diary of Rosa King, owner and proprietress of the Hotel Bella Vista, an important person in this book. I read the stories of the Generals, of rich landowners, of artists and writers and engineers, politicians and radical reformers, and all these have their say. I took stories from each of these and included them in a single volume, my own panoramic picture of the Mexican Revolution. This book is a work of fiction within a true historical context. Wherever possible I have retold the history as I found it, only changing the wording around some to avoid outright plagiarism. In only one instance did I use an author's exact words to describe a person: when John Womack described Pablo Escandon as the last frail twig of his line---I wracked my brain searching in vain for a better way to put it but in the end found the line too delicious to resist. My apologies and thanks to Mr. Womack. I should add that the ideas of the very clever Mr. Dooley are not mine at all but the intellectual property of Chicago-based humorist Finley Peter Dunne (1867-1936). In regards to historical authenticity, there are things whic
