Book Synopsis The Pictorial Story of Walt Disney's First Superstar by : Edward Bergen
Download or read book The Pictorial Story of Walt Disney's First Superstar written by Edward Bergen and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This series of Pictorial books enables readers worldwide to share images selected from the author's collections of extremely rare Disney-related memorabilia that is generally shown only at formal philatelic exhibitions. Walt Disney's humble little character, Mickey Mouse, was first presented to motion picture theater audiences in 1928-just one year prior to the infamous Wall Street stock market crash that resulted in what is referred to as The Great Depression, which continued until 1941 and was followed by World War Two which lasted until 1945. For the better part of two decades, for countless millions of families, there were few moments of joy and little means of escape from the world's dismal, disheartening economic conditions. Two items not directly related to either Depression or World War came together to provide moments of relief and escape from the grim news of the day. One was the creation of short animated cartoons and another was the development of motion pictures with synchronized sound. Walt Disney and his brilliant creative team became pioneers in these entertainment advances, and their work resulted in the introduction of a small mouse who would quickly become the world's most beloved motion picture star. Even Walt was caught unprepared for the global popularity of Mickey Mouse. Printed items featuring Mickey's likeness were quickly churned out in many countries, much of which was crude to the point of vulgarity. Some examples of these images have survived to become part of Ed Bergen's collection, along with examples of Disney's own successful marketing activities which are presented in this Pictorial series-postcards, greeting cards, books and magazines, toys, wristwatches and other novelties, and ultimately even feature films. Ed Bergen's delightful collection of unusual and seldom seen memorabilia begins with Mickey's motion picture introduction and his immediate rise to unparalleled entertainment fame. It is an insightful glimpse of the early beginnings of Mickey Mouse, who would become America's most welcome ambassador to the entire world.

Book Synopsis Super Power, Spoony Bards, and Silverware by : Dominic Arsenault
Download or read book Super Power, Spoony Bards, and Silverware written by Dominic Arsenault and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2017-09-01 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the Super Nintendo Entertainment System embodied Nintendo’s s resistance to innovation and took the company from industry leadership to the margins of videogaming. This is a book about the Super Nintendo Entertainment System that is not celebratory or self-congratulatory. Most other accounts declare the Super NES the undisputed victor of the “16-bit console wars” of 1989–1995. In this book, Dominic Arsenault reminds us that although the SNES was a strong platform filled with high-quality games, it was also the product of a short-sighted corporate vision focused on maintaining Nintendo’s market share and business model. This led the firm to fall from a dominant position during its golden age (dubbed by Arsenault the “ReNESsance”) with the NES to the margins of the industry with the Nintendo 64 and GameCube consoles. Arsenault argues that Nintendo’s conservative business strategies and resistance to innovation during the SNES years explain its market defeat by Sony’s PlayStation. Extending the notion of “platform” to include the marketing forces that shape and constrain creative work, Arsenault draws not only on game studies and histories but on game magazines, boxes, manuals, and advertisements to identify the technological discourses and business models that formed Nintendo’s Super Power. He also describes the cultural changes in video games during the 1990s that slowly eroded the love of gamer enthusiasts for the SNES as the Nintendo generation matured. Finally, he chronicles the many technological changes that occurred through the SNES's lifetime, including full-motion video, CD-ROM storage, and the shift to 3D graphics. Because of the SNES platform’s architecture, Arsenault explains, Nintendo resisted these changes and continued to focus on traditional gameplay genres.
Book Synopsis His Bat Is His Calling Card by : George Gilliam
Download or read book His Bat Is His Calling Card written by George Gilliam and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2017-02-21 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is George Gilliams informative account of how he combined discipline, physical fitness training, tennis principles (which were fine-tuned while he was in the air force and working at E. R. Squibb & Sons), as well as techniques learned from reading different baseball books to help teach his son Isiah how to play baseball. He also read books and magazines about great players, like his cousin James William Junior Gilliam. Learning about past and present Major League players, especially the Negro league players, helped to serve as an example to help motivate Isiah to study players, especially switch hitters that had similar characteristics and played similar positions as Isiah. The game of baseball mirrors our society, and working hard every day is one of the main keys to success. The journey Isiah has traveled revolves around several important key points that help to make the game of baseball more than just a game. First, His Bat Is His Calling Card shares with the reader how the game of baseball has helped Isiah to build bridges with other nations. Learn the value of cultural diversity, the importance of staying in shape, being a proactive citizen, staying focused in school, having short- and long-term plans to achieve success, taking into consideration the decline of African American baseball players in professional baseball. These taught Isiah the importance of understanding the past and present history of Major League Baseball as it pertains to African Americans; this was one of main goals as he ascended from playing T-ball and started playing for the NY Yankees organization. I felt compelled to share his journey with parents and kids who also have dreams of someday playing baseball in high school, college, or the Major Leagues.

Download or read book Leaving Eden written by Anne LeClaire and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The promise of beauty—the kind of real, personal beauty that can transform a person’s life—arrived in Eden, Virginia, on the fourth Thursday in June.” That’s the day Tallie Brock sees the sign at the Klip-N-Kurl, the beauty parlor where she works part-time, sweeping the floor and refilling shampoo bottles, among other chores. (What she really enjoys is listening to the women chat, gossip, and buzz like a beehive.) The sign in the front window announces GLAMOUR DAY. For twenty dollars, a woman can receive a complete professional makeover—and a glossy nine-by-twelve-inch picture of the result. For Tallie, the glam shot just may be her ticket out of Lovettsville. She dreams of someday going to Hollywood and becoming a Star. Her mother, who was the spitting image of Natalie Wood, used to say “the sky’s the limit.” In fact, her mother once left home to make a movie in Los Angeles. But she returned six months later without whispering a word about it—and tried to pick up her life right where she left off. Tallie noticed something different, though. And her mother’s best friend, Martha Lee, the plainest woman within miles, knew the secret that soon the whole town would discover. At the time, Tallie was just afraid her mother would get antsy and disappear again. She was only half right. But that was four years ago, and now Glamour Day is fast approaching. While jotting down observations in her Rulebook for Living (such as “Women with fat faces shouldn’t wear bangs” and “Beetles signify change”), Tallie finds herself changing in unexpected ways—as she tests the limits of trust, explores her growing attraction to a boy from a family as rich as her imagination, and reaches for the sky like she has never done before. By turns funny and tender, joyous and poignant, bestselling author Anne LeClaire has written a winning, stylish novel of small-town Southern life— and what it means to be a mother, daughter, best friend, wife, and lover.

Book Synopsis Infancy to Early Childhood by : Robert N. Emde
Download or read book Infancy to Early Childhood written by Robert N. Emde and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2001-04-19 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Behavioral genetics is a fast-growing, multidisciplinary field which attempts to explain the influence of genetic and environmental factors on behavior through the lifespan. The preferred investigative technique for teasing out the differences between genetics and the environment is the longitudinal twin study. This book is the first complete publication from the MacArthur Longitudinal Twin Study (MALTS) that is by far the most ambitious and comprehensive longitudinal twin study to date. The goal of such an in-depth study was not to merely provide thorough descriptions of developmental change between the ages of one and three years, but to offer an original theoretical framework that explains how change occurs in different domains and how genetics and the environment influence those changes. This rigorous study will set the agenda for developmental psychology and behavioral genetics for decades to come.
