Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing upon ten years of research experience, the master scholar James D. G. Dunn presents a book on a major issue in the study of Christian origins: what were the attitudes toward Jewish law within earliest Christianity? This volume not only gathers the author's significant contributions to date but also includes new material. Divided into nine parts, it is set in the wider context of a living dialogue and debate. The introduction maps out Dunn's extensive work in Pauline and Markan studies. The final chapter, "The Theology of Galatians," serves as a summary of Dunn's current position on Paul and the law and brings the volume to a convincing conclusion.

Book excerpt: In this second volume, Dr. Cook provides a series of articles that are part of his morning meditations on Scripture. Meditation, in the biblical sense, is an intentional filling of the mind with divine viewpoint; specifically, God’s Word. The purpose is to saturate our thinking with Scripture so that it will permeate all aspects of our reasoning and guide us into God’s will. These articles touch on subjects such as soteriology, grace, worship, righteous living, and character studies of people such as Saul and David. The overall intent of the book is to inform and inspire believers to live righteously before God.

Book excerpt: Christ is Throughout the Bible. He is in the New Testament, but He is also throughout the Old Testament. He is in the Pentateuch; He is in the Writings; He is in the Prophets. He is in every verse of the Old Testament as well as the New Testament. We are to see Christ within the Bible and then within ourselves. We must also see Him everywhere outside of ourselves. We must not only see Him; we must hear His constant calling to us; we must feel His gentle touch as He holds us close in times of need; We must smell the pleasing sweet-smelling aroma of His Sacrifice; We must taste His Flesh and Blood when taking the Host and Wine. He is everything to us, and we are everything to Him. The Old Testament starts with creation. It presents the agreement that God made between Himself and mankind. The agreement was broken and began the long process of the covenants that culminated with the Messianic Covenant. It is God's Plan for our salvation and has many parts to it. The purpose of the Old Testament covenants is to foreshadow the numerous elements of the Messianic Covenant. The prior ones provide not only the elements but definitions for the last one. It lets us know why Christ did what He did. We wouldn't know what Christ's Commandment would mean in relation to sin. We wouldn't understand His Sacrifice in relation to salvation. We wouldn't know that the journey we make, as Christians, was acted out thousands of years ago to show us all the steps needed to reach the Promise. The prophets when put together provide a body of knowledge that is statistically so improbable to be coincidence that to deny that Jesus is the Messiah has no basis at all. This document shows that the Old Testament is all about Christ, from beginning to end. Christ is everywhere we look. He is in the numerous covenants, in the Law of Moses, in the Psalms, and in the Prophets. Christ is the fulfillment of the entire Law of Moses and the Prophets. The Old exist not for us to follow but for us to understand why we follow the New. Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. The Old Testament exists to teach us why.

Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking book, Michael Gorman asks why there is no theory or model of the atonement called the "new-covenant" model, since this understanding of the atonement is likely the earliest in the Christian tradition, going back to Jesus himself. Gorman argues that most models of the atonement over-emphasize the penultimate purposes of Jesus' death and the "mechanics" of the atonement, rather than its ultimate purpose: to create a transformed, Spirit-filled people of God. The New Testament's various atonement metaphors are part of a remarkably coherent picture of Jesus' death as that which brings about the new covenant (and thus the new community) promised by the prophets, which is also the covenant of peace. Gorman therefore proposes a new model of the atonement that is really not new at all--the new-covenant model. He argues that this is not merely an ancient model in need of rediscovery, but also a more comprehensive, integrated, participatory, communal, and missional model than any of the major models in the tradition. Life in this new covenant, Gorman argues, is a life of communal and individual participation in Jesus' faithful, loving, peacemaking death. Written for both academics and church leaders, this book will challenge all who read it to re-think and re-articulate the meaning of Christ's death for us.

Book excerpt: "How can you believe all this stuff? This is the number-one question Catholics get asked and, sometimes, we ask ourselves. Why do we believe that God exists, that he became a man and came to save us, that what looks like a wafer of bread is actually his body? Why do we believe that he inspired a holy book and founded an infallible Church to teach us the one true way to live? Ever since he became Catholic, Trent Horn has spent a lot of time answering these questions, trying to explain to friends, family, and total strangers the reasons for his Catholic faith. Some didn't believe in God, or even in the existence of truth. Others said they were spiritual but didn't think you needed religion to be happy. Some were Christians who thought Catholic doctrines over-complicated the pure gospel. And some were fellow Catholics who had a hard time understanding everything they professed to believe on Sunday. Why We're Catholic assembles the clearest, friendliest, most helpful answers that Trent learned to give to all these people and more. Beginning with how we can know reality and ending with our hope of eternal life, it s the perfect way to help skeptics and seekers (or Catholics who want to firm up their faith) understand the evidence that bolsters our belief and brings us joy" --

It deals with a topic which, as the author states in his preface, has been much neglected in spite of the fact that biblical scholars and theologians have always paid lip service to the importance of law in Jewish life. Poythress explores Genesis through Deuteronomy, demonstrating how the sacrifices and traditions of the Hebrews graphically foreshadow Christ’s relationship with his people. Dr. Poythress also explains how the penalties of the law prefigure the destruction of sin and guilt through Jesus. -- Publisher's statement

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An introduction to a complex theological issue that impacts our daily lives as believers in Christ: What is the relevance of the Old Testament Law to our understanding of the Gospel and how it should be lived? This book explores five major approaches to this important biblical topic as they've developed in Protestant circles: Non-Theonomic Reformed View – the law is the perfection of righteousness in Jesus Christ. Theonomic Reformed View – the goodness of the law is dependent on how it's used and does not offer a way to salvation. Heavily focused on Paul's discussion of the Law. Law as "Gracious Guidance" View – emphasizes the contrasts between the Mosaic law and the Gospel of grace, while still asserting the Law's value. Dispensational View – approaches the Law from a historical perspective to help us understand its presentation, treatment, and recipients. Modified Lutheran View – the Law of Christ as the fulfillment of the Law of Moses. This book allows each contributor to not only present the case for his view, but also to critique and respond to the critiques of the other contributors, allowing you to compare their beliefs in an open forum setting to see where they overlap and where they differ. The Counterpoints series presents a comparison and critique of scholarly views on topics important to Christians that are both fair-minded and respectful of the biblical text. Each volume is a one-stop reference that allows readers to evaluate the different positions on a specific issue and form their own, educated opinion.

Jesus showed how important this was on the Road to Emmaus; when revealing himself to the men as they walked; He explained who He was through the law and prophets. "He said to them; "How foolish you are; and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?" And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets; he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself" (Luke 24:25-27).Jesus proved who He was by the scriptures. It is imperative, as believers to understand these things; as it solidifies Jesus as the foundation of our faith. In the Bible there are over 60 major prophecies; Jesus fulfilled them all.
