Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some secrets were never meant to be uncovered... Maggie May Martin hasn’t always been the most reliable woman in the world, and she isn’t the friendliest either, but she tries her hardest to be a good mom. Most days, she falls short on that too, but her three girls mean the world to her and she genuinely tries to do the best by them—so when she goes missing, they’re the first to notice and the only ones who seem to care... Meghan Marie Martin hates the small town she was born and raised in and she can’t wait until she leaves for the Air Force after graduation. Her only concern is leaving behind her irresponsible mother and her two little sisters. Meghan has practically raised them on her own and she only hopes that when she leaves for the military, her mother will finally pull it together. The problem, of course, is that her mother likes to party, so when Maggie May goes missing, Meghan not only has to take care of everything at home, but she also has to search for her mother, because Maggie May has a bad habit of disappearing, so no one else is officially looking. That is until Meghan begins to receive mysterious messages, almost as if someone or something is guiding her to a haunted hotel in Manhattan, where people say an elevator game will take riders to the mysterious 13th floor. Some say it’s an entrance to hell, others a portal to another dimension. Either way, Meghan must brave the game in hopes of discovering the truth behind her mother’s disappearance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tsunami of laundered drug money surging through the US financial system has a profound corrupting effect on everyone it touches. Fuelled by Americas unquenchable thirst for cocaine, more than $500 billion dollars of laundered money is present in the system, according to FBI estimates. DDM recounts the intrigue and human tragedy that results when Mexicos ruthless cocaine cartel collides with Americas white-gloved world of private banking. Chris Callen, the protagonist is a thirty-year-old investment manager with Goldman Sachs New York office. After five years with the firm, he is on the fast track, destined to make partner. But the rarified environment of college, business school and Wall Street while equipping him with technical skills and polish has not taught him street-smart survival skills and savvy. He arrogantly but mistakenly believes he is a match for one of Americas premier entrepreneurs. When Jorge Ruiz, a wealthy Mexican businessman is found murdered on a deserted road in Northern Mexico, a tale of coercion, betrayal and manipulation unfolds. Ruiz, faced with the certain bankruptcy of his auto dealerships by nervous Mexican banks, turns to a shadowy Mafia-controlled finance company to bail him out. The drug lord Carlos Jimenez, who needs to launder his drug profits, controls the finance company. In return for bailing out Ruiz company, Jimenez coerces him to launder his drug money through Ruiz US investment management account with Stafford Securities (SS). The founder and owner of SS is Bill Stafford, Ruiz oldest and closest friend and one of San Franciscos most successful entrepreneurs. Stafford Securities is the leading investment management firm on the West Coast. Stafford, 56, built the business single-handedly through his own drive, cunning, determination and intelligence. He is a self-made centimillionaire used to getting his own way. Stafford discovers his firm has laundered millions of dollars through the account, unwittingly. Convinced that the FBI wont believe he was unaware of the laundering operation at his company, Stafford and his socialite wife Elaine, fear they will be jailed and their company seized by the Feds. The prospect of forfeiting their wealth, power, social standing and prestige spurs the couple to seek a solution. But in todays very stringent regulatory environment, where US courts have convicted private bankers of money laundering based on the notion that they OUGHT TO HAVE KNOWN THEIR CLIENTS TRUE SOURCE OF WEALTH, Stafford concedes that pleading ignorance is no defence. Further, once rumors circulate among his wealthy San Francisco clientele that he and his firm are under investigation for laundering money, he fears his clients will desert him. Stafford and Elaine craft a plan to shift blame to Chris Callen whom they hire as a partner at SS on the pretext of setting up the international division. Chris Callen struggles with accepting the rich offer, but eventually succumbs to Staffords aggressive wooing. Originally from San Francisco, the lure of a partnership interest in Stafford Securities and a generous compensation package, cause him impulsively to accept the job offer. A love interest, Ming Chan, a San Francisco fashion designer, is another motivation to accept the job in San Francisco, leaving New York. Chris is smart, materialistic and driven to succeed, though impulsive and arrogant. Once he takes the new job, Stafford manipulates Chris weaknesses (impulsiveness, materialism and arrogance) to position him to take the blame for the money laundering operation.

Book excerpt: In Psychedelia and Other Colours, acclaimed author Rob Chapman explores in crystalline detail the history, precedents and cultural impact of LSD, from the earliest experiments in painting with light and immersive environments to the thriving avant-garde scene that existed in San Francisco even before the Grateful Dead and the Fillmore Auditorium. In the UK, he documents an entirely different history, and one that has never been told before. It has its roots in fairy tales and fairgrounds, the music hall and the dead of Flanders fields, in the Festival of Britain and that peculiarly British strand of surrealism that culminated in the Magical Mystery Tour. Sitars and Sergeant Pepper, surfadelica and the Soft Machine, light shows and love-ins - the mind-expanding effects of acid were to redefine popular culture as we know it. Psychedelia and Other Colours documents these utopian reverberations - and the dark side of their moon - in a perfect portrait.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My Ordeal in Canada is a narration of my tragic plight as a black man in Canada. I have been incarcerated five times by the police force and for no valid reasons whatsoever. I was also condemned to a psychiatric facility, admitted forcibly, without my consents and in violation of my rights as a Canadian citizen. Since I came to Canada in 1985 I have been subjected to many denials and deprivations by the prejudiced Canadian justice system which I have enumerated in my book in greater details. Since 2005 I experienced a number of discriminatory impediments imposed on me by the systemic racism that is prevalent in the Canadian justice system. I was prohibited from having access to my children for a total of more than ten years even though I committed no offense against any of them whatsoever. The Toronto police and the justice system treat black men like myself differently and impose their racially biased verdicts without any repercussions. This book highlights the various racist ordeals I was subjected to especially by the police and the Canadian justice system and by my employers. My deplorable and dismal predicaments, however, are not unique to me alone. They are paramount manifestations of the pathetic and pitiful trends and discriminations black men especially have to endure in racially biased Canada. It is my hope that by writing my story and experiences in Toronto I will influence and bring the required changes and to highlight the discrepancies customary and prevailing in the Toronto police and the Canadian justice system. I feel that I have a story to tell that will make Canada a better place to live in for all its citizens when the required changes are instituted.

Book excerpt: The author came to United States, for the first time, in 1943. He was then ten years old. A US Navy ship brought him to San Diego, California, straight from a concentration camp. Unfortunately, the United States government did not let him remain. So he went to Mexico, where he lived in a refugee camp for five years. When the camp was terminated, he was compelled to struggle. In order to survive, he held many jobs. At fifteen he worked as a roofer, a logger, and a sawmill helper, neglecting his formal education because of lack of time and opportunity. He immigrated to USA in 1951. This time he was allowed to stay. Here, because of his Polish origin, he suffered rejection, degradation, and discrimination. Here for the first time in his life, he was called a Dumb Polak and a White Nigger. Here he was subjected to the so-called offensive Polish jokes. This plus discrimination, rejection and degradation made his life a never-ending torment, a hell on earth! This autobiography was written in the form of a novel, and it is a continuation of author's first book: A Journey Into Exile-the first part of his life.

Book excerpt: A Gathering of Promises is a history of acid rock and psychedelic music in and from the state of Texas, focusing largely on its mid-1960s origins with the 13th Floor Elevators and contemporaries such as the Golden Dawn, the Red Crayola and Bubble Puppy, and following its development to the present day and the popularity of the annual Austin Psych Fest. Grounded in a strong social, cultural and historical context, the book asks how Texas produced some of the most extreme and influential psych of any era despite a prevailing social ethos of Christian conservatism and the strictest drug laws of any American state. It looks at how this environment shaped and affected the music, alongside the Texan frontier spirit and its championing of expansion, freedom and individualism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music exhilarates, enchants, fires, liberates, calms, comforts, heals. Like hardly any other medium, it lets us take off into a world beyond time and space. How does that work? What is the mystery of sound? There are theories, suppositions and hunches from the most diverse fields, but in no epoch has it been possible to lift the veil definitively. Tenaciously, playfully and at times ironically, Swiss musician and book author Richard Koechli searches for answers as to how and why music touches us and, in the sense of transcendence, even takes us beyond ourselves. What processes are going on there, in the brain and in the soul? How has all this influenced the history of humanity? Meticulously, Koechli examines explanations from musicology, natural science, psychology, music therapy, sociology, literature, philosophy, mysticism, spirituality and metaphysics. He passionately quotes legendary stars as they experience the magic. Worried, he also asks why, since time immemorial, the «drug» of music is often not enough for us, why we believe we can top the high with some substance or occult practice. Last but not least, Richard Koechli ends the 200-page book with a fascinating foray through the history of «Psychedelic Rock», because it was this music from the hippie era that taught him how to take off. And in his role as a multiple award-winning blues musician and singer-songwriter, he complements it all with a very personal album: «Transcendental Blues» (download link in the book), a complex musical trip through the ups and downs of being human. For anyone involved in music in any way. A relevant book because it multiplies respect for the mystery of sounds. A stirring one, because it takes the love for music to infinity.

Book excerpt: Advances in science and technology have provided mere mortals with God-like powers. Satellites have given us the vision of eagles. High-speed computers have provided planners insights into future events through data analysis and simulation. Ancient civilizations made sacrifices to Gods that had less perceived power than the average American now takes for granted. What would be the outcome if an average American, well schooled in the use of modern tools, used them in the pursuit of a criminal objective? Could the "Law of Unintended Consequences" be repealed by the rigorous application of logic and system design? Is the "Perfect Crime" within the grasp of your typical neighbor who desires economic freedom? Would governmental agencies be the motivation behind the quest, defenders of the "status quo" or victims of the results? These questions and additional issues are explored with drama, suspense, and humor throughout the pages of Yellow Snow.
