Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Message of Isaiah 40-55 traces the argument of Isaiah 40-55 to show how the chapters bring a message of encouragement and challenge about God's intention to restore the Judean community, some of whose members are in exile in Babylon, others living in the city of Jerusalem that has lain devastated since it fell to the Babylonians in 587. The chapters hold before this community's eyes a vision of the nature of its God as the powerful creator and the loving restorer. In the course of following the argument, the reader becomes aware that the chapters have to deal with their audience's mysterious resistance to their message. It cannot give God the kind of response the message needs and deserves, nor can it fulfil the role as God's servant that is designed for it. God nevertheless remains committed to it. The prophet eventually becomes aware of a distinctive personal calling to embody that response, until the people are ready to do so. It is the prophet's willingness to do this (notwithstanding the suffering it brings) that embodies the kind of ministry that needs to be exercised to them so that they may be brought back to God and find a restoration of spirit, as well as a physical restoration.

Book excerpt: An inspiration to writers, musicians, and mystics, The Overture of the Book of Consolations summarizes and highlights all the major themes of Deutero-Isaiah. Its predominant theme is consolation - consolation of Israel after the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple and the depopulation of the kingdom of Judah. The Overture assures Judah that the past is forgiven and Yahweh is ushering in a New Creation, a future more glorious than the Exodus, the march through the desert, where Israel will once again be wedded to her husband: Yahweh, the Holy One of Israel.

Book excerpt: This multifaceted volume artfully blends the functions of an introduction and a commentary. Without overwhelming the student with details, it discusses a wide range of issues that are important for the interpretation of Isaiah. The book consists of three parts. In the first part, Herbert Wolf discusses the more traditional introductory questions: the world of Isaiah, the theories of multiple authorship, the structure of Isaiah, and Isaiah's poetry. The second part is a detailed paragraph-by-paragraph analysis of the prophecy itself. The last part of the book discusses Isaiah's christological and eschatological emphases. Detailed footnotes and an extensive bibliography facilitate further study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oystein Lund gives a new approach to texts in Isaiah 40-55 that deal with ways and desert transformation. Earlier exegesis has mainly read these texts in a literal way. In recent years, exegetes have pointed out that the so-called 'exodus texts' should rather be interpreted metaphorically. The author supports this, and accordingly seeks to continue this discourse by systematizing, intensifying, and deepening the argumentation for a metaphorical reading. He argues that most of the way-texts in Isaiah 40-55 are interrelated, and gradually contribute to explore questions regarding the way-situation of the people. The way-theme appears in the prologue, and in 40:27 a problem approach is established when the people is addressed: How can you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel, 'My way is hidden from the LORD, and my right passes by my God'? Several subsequent way-texts are related to this text, and together these draw a coherent picture in which the problematic way-situation of the people in the past and present is transformed. JHWH establishes new ways in which he leads his people through their difficult landscape. Oystein Lund argues that such a coherent reading of the way-texts gives good meaning, which is consistent with the over all message of Isaiah 40-55.

Book excerpt: For over one hundred years International Critical Commentaries have had a special place among works on the Bible. They bring together all the relevant aids to exegesis - linguistic, textual, archaeological, historical, literary, and theological - to help the reader understand the meaning of the books of the Old and New Testaments. The new commentaries continue this tradition. All new evidence now available is incorporated and new methods of study are applied. The authors are of the highest international standing. No attempt has been made to secure a uniform theological or critical approach to the biblical text: contributors have been invited for their scholarly distinction, not for their adherence to any one school of thought.

Book excerpt: The second part of a 2-volume work, this study combines recent approaches that treat the formation and early interpretation of the final form of the book of Isaiah with the more conventional historical-critical methods that treat the use of traditions by Isaiah's authors and editors. Studies investigate Isaiah's use of early sacred tradition, the editing and contextualization of oracles within the Isaianic tradition itself, and the interpretation of the book of Isaiah in later traditions (as seen in the various versions of the text and various communities). Contributors of this volume include virtually all of the major scholars of Isaiah and the leading scholars of biblical interpretation in the intertestamental, New Testament, and early Jewish periods.

Book excerpt: In this volume, the first of a projected series on the Hebrew Bible, de Waard aims to give translators better insight into the viewpoint of the textual critic to help them find a good base for translation. Though of primary interest for translators, students and scholars will also be pleased to find that de Waard summarizes the arguments and ratings of the Hebrew Old Testament Text Project. Because the final report of the HOTTP was published in French and was the work of textual critics rather than translation specialists, its valuable contribution was found to have practical limitations. DeWaard's work is also valuable because it examines three major Jewish versions in addition to the Christian versions selected by the Project for study. Future volumes are planned to cover other portions of the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament.

It brings together a variety of evangelical responses to the differing conclusions of mainstream and conservative scholars regarding the authorship and dating of the book of Isaiah. Some claim that multiple authors wrote the Book of Isaiah, while others believe an 8th-century B.C. Judean prophet penned the entire work. Offering a more nuanced view, a diverse group of evangelical scholars suggests that careful attention to the complex history of the text need not be a hindrance in accepting it as divinely inspired Scripture.

Book excerpt: Isaiah 4055 in dramatic voiceDeutero-Isaiah's work, which comprises Isaiah chapters 4055, has exerted its influence on testimonies of faith in both Jewish and Christian tradition down to the present day. Baltzer's magnificent commentary places the document in the new context after the Exile. The experience of catastrophe, the need to grapple with new problems, and hope for a peaceful future are linked in Deutero-Isaiah's composition. The work aims to establish accord between adherents of the Jacob/Israel tradition on the one hand and those committed to the Zion/Jerusalem tradition on the other the background being the tensions between the exiles and the people who had remained on the land. Along with masterful presentation of the book's themes, Baltzer also develops a creative hypothesis about the work's genre, identifying it as a "liturgical drama" in six acts, which makes it possible to understand the text's function in worship and its significance as a literary text of supreme artistry for a non
