Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Karamo Bohannon, who had been given asylum from the war-torn Congo to become a top echelon professor at a Big Conference university, is found dead in his office on the last day of his contract. Less than twenty-four hours before, he had announced his candidacy for a hotly-contested seat in the U.S. Congress. Was his death due to natural causes resulting from a lifetime of Type A stress on a depleted body and soul? Or was it murder? Before the question could be answered, all trace of the man--his past, his present, and his projected future had not been just redacted from the world-wide cyber memory banks, but completely erased. All university web pages, faculty rosters, and catalog listings had been sterilized--there was no listing of any man by that name having held an esteemed teaching Chair for ten years. The scrubbing extended to all pertinent government vital statistics in all agencies and bureaus. The man was not just mortally dead, he virtually had never been born. "In addition to being a cracking good techno-murder mystery, Jeane Heimberger Candido's newest book affords what prestigious editor John W. Campbell of 'Astounding Magazine' later 'Analog' called 'a diagonal slice through society's culture of the day.' This book ought to be a shot across the bow. If you think the world she describes does not actually exist, the politicos and pundits have done their job. Jeane's book adds another level of complexity to the world as it is. Read between the lines." H.J. Popowski, Author & Historian "I was one of the first fans allowed to read this mystery. It was well thought out for timeline and characters. I enjoyed especially the insurance investigators. I read until my eyes were tired not wanting to put the book down more than once." Stephen Davis, Cyber Security Analyst, MIS

Everyone who lived in the village of Larkwood and in the Ladys manor feared Amber. Everyone except Allon, Vivians son, who was born the same night Amber was found; Allon was Ambers only friend. As the story enfolds, Ambers life is in great danger and he is forced to flee. His greatest adventure begins with that night of escape, an adventure that leads him to his father. Along the way he must battle giants, monsters in the forest of the fairies, the Saxons and even his friend Allon in King Arthurs court. Download or read book Unshed Tears written by Edith Hofmann and published by Mereo Books. This book was released on 2019-01-18 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This true-life novel was written in the aftermath of the Second World War and the author’s terrible experiences in a Nazi death camp. Only now has it been published for the first time. Edith Hofmann is a survivor of the Holocaust, born in Prague in 1927 as Edith Birkin. In 1941, along with her parents, she was deported to the Lodz Ghetto, where within a year both her parents had died. At 15 she was left to fend for herself. The Lodz Ghetto was the second-largest ghetto to Warsaw, and was established for Jews and Gypsies in German-occupied Poland. Situated in the town of Lodz in Poland and originally intended as a temporary gathering point for Jews, the ghetto was transformed into a major industrial centre, providing much needed supplies for Nazi Germany and especially for the German Army. Because of its remarkable productivity, the ghetto managed to survive until August 1944, when the remaining population, including Edith, was transported to Auschwitz and Chelmno extermination camp in cattle trucks. It was the last ghetto in Poland to be liquidated due to the advancing Russian army. Edith was only 17, and one of the lucky ones. For the majority, it was their final journey. A small group of them were selected for work. With her hair shaved off and deprived of all her possessions, she travelled to Kristianstadt, a labour camp in Silesia, to work in an underground munitions factory.

Book excerpt: The Arthurian legend is one of the most enduring and powerful of myths, and Mary Stewart's classic The Merlin Trilogy is one of its most beloved and acclaimed retellings. In prose that is as vividly, achingly real as it is poetic, New York Times bestselling author Mary Stewart brings to life the man behind the myth: Myrddin Emrys ... Merlinus Ambrosius ... Merlin. The Crystal Cave The Hollow Hills The Last Enchantment Born the bastard son of a Welsh princess, Myrddin Emrys -- or, as he would later be known, Merlin -- leads a perilous childhood in The Crystal Cave, haunted by portents and visions. But destiny has great plans for this no-man's-son, taking him from prophesying before the High King Vortigern to the crowning of UtherPendragon ... and the conception of Arthur -- king for once and always. Keeping watch over the young Arthur Pendragon in The Hollow Hills, the prince and prophet Merlin Ambrosius is haunted by dreams of the magical sword Caliburn, hidden for centuries. When Uther Pendragon is killed in battle, the time of destiny is at hand, and Arthur must claim the fabled sword to become the true High King of Britain. In The Last Enchantment, Arthur Pendragon is king at last. Unchallenged on the battlefield, he melds the country together in a time of promise as Merlin works to keep safe the once and future king. But sinister powers plot to destroy Camelot, and when the witch-queen Morgause -- Arthur's own half sister -- ensnares him in an incestuous liaison, a fatal web of love, betrayal, and bloody vengeance is woven. Extensively researched and beautifully written, The Merlin Trilogy is the epic culmination of an acclaimed career, a legend in and of itself.
Book Synopsis English Magic and Imperial Madness by : Peter D. Mathews
Download or read book English Magic and Imperial Madness written by Peter D. Mathews and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2021-11-09 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regency England was a pivotal time of political uncertainty, with a changing monarchy, the Napoleonic Wars, and a population explosion in London. In Susanna Clarke's fantasy novel Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, the era is also witness to the unexpected return of magic. Locating the consequences of this eruption of magical unreason within the context of England's imperial history, this study examines Merlin and his legacy, the roles of magicians throughout history, the mythology of disenchantment, the racism at work in the character of Stephen Black, the meaning behind the fantasy of magic's return, and the Englishness of English magic itself. Looking at the larger historical context of magic and its links to colonialism, the book offers both a fuller understanding of the ethical visions underlying Clarke's groundbreaking novel of madness intertwined with magic, while challenging readers to rethink connections among national identity, rationality, and power.
