Download or read book Boundaries written by Maya Lin and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2016-04-26 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renowned artist and architect Maya Lin's visual and verbal sketchbook—a unique view into her artwork and philosophy. Walking through this parklike area, the memorial appears as a rift in the earth -- a long, polished black stone wall, emerging from and receding into the earth. Approaching the memorial, the ground slopes gently downward, and the low walls emerging on either side, growing out of the earth, extend and converge at a point below and ahead. Walking into the grassy site contained by the walls of this memorial, we can barely make out the carved names upon the memorial's walls. These names, seemingly infinite in number, convey the sense of overwhelming numbers, while unifying these individuals into a whole.... So begins the competition entry submitted in 1981 by a Yale undergraduate for the design of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. -- subsequently called "as moving and awesome and popular a piece of memorial architecture as exists anywhere in the world." Its creator, Maya Lin, has been nothing less than world famous ever since. From the explicitly political to the un-ashamedly literary to the completely abstract, her simple and powerful sculpture -- the Rockefeller Foundation sculpture, the Southern Poverty Law Center Civil Rights Memorial, the Yale Women's Table, Wave Field -- her architecture, including The Museum for African Art and the Norton residence, and her protean design talents have defined her as one of the most gifted creative geniuses of the age. Boundaries is her first book: an eloquent visual/verbal sketchbook produced with the same inspiration and attention to detail as any of her other artworks. Like her environmental sculptures, it is a site, but one which exists at a remove so that it may comment on the personal and artistic elements that make up those works. In it, sketches, photographs, workbook entries, and original designs are held together by a deeply personal text. Boundaries is a powerful literary and visual statement by "a leading public artist" (Holland Carter). It is itself a unique work of art.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Yahweh-Elohim: The Memorial Name Expositions concerning this name, in all the beauty and accuracy, which a deep knowledge of the original languages, and the law and the testi mony could give, are contained in the writings of Dr. Thomas. To his valuable aid, we are indebted, for the true light of the Scriptures, concerning this glorious name yahweh-elohim. In his Pha nerosis, we find these words: The Memorial Name, exhibited in Moses' writings, is not Simply a word of four letters, given to an abstraction, as men give names to their children: but a name memorial of a future manifestation of the Eternal Spirit: which manifestation will not be of One, through One only: but of one in and through ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands: that the Name covers them all; and consequently, the thousands of thousands are but One Yahweh (p. Book Synopsis 9/11 Memorial Visions by : Lester J. Levine
Download or read book 9/11 Memorial Visions written by Lester J. Levine and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-08-04 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than a billion people watched the 9/11 World Trade Center destruction unfold on television, making it the greatest shared event in world history. Reflecting this fact, the 2003 World Trade Center Memorial Design Competition was open to anyone, drawing 5,201 entries from 60 countries, all of which were posted online. Most designs were the greyscale hardscape of typical memorials. A few were radically imaginative. Some engaged memory with sound, color, movement, technology or visitor participation. Others reached across the globe, cyberspace, even outer space. These imaginings stirred questions about their creators. Who were they? What were they thinking and feeling? How did the concept develop? This book, based on a first ever review of the entries, tells the personal stories of more than 180 designers whose creative perspective translated an horrific event, giving deeper thought to the relation of memorial spaces to history, geography, technology and cultural diversity.

Book Synopsis Vietnam Veterans Memorial by : Joseph Ferry
Download or read book Vietnam Veterans Memorial written by Joseph Ferry and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-11-25 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Vietnam War was more divisive than any conflict in U.S. history. Between 1958 and 1975, more than 58,000 young Americans lost their lives in Southeast Asia. Because the war was unpopular at home, the American servicemen who returned home were often shunned or rejected. To heal these divisions, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial was constructed on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The aim of "the Wall," as the memorial is sometimes called, was to recognize the service all who served in Vietnam. Dedicated in 1982, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial is among the most-visited monuments in the capital, and a powerful reminder of the sacrifices that a generation of Americans made for their country.
