Book Synopsis The Medieval Experience, 300-1400 by : Jill N. Claster
Download or read book The Medieval Experience, 300-1400 written by Jill N. Claster and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 1982-02 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This general survey of medieval European economy, society, and culture is intended as a first guide to the subject for college students. In writing The Medieval Experience, Jill Claster has been particularly concerned to demonstrate the vitality and diversity that the world of the Middle Ages achieved, despite the fact that "the physical aspects of life were exceedingly difficult." This very usable and accessible textbook is enhanced by illustrations and source quotations which help convey a sense of the period's historical texture. The range of topics explored is extensive. Economic factors such as progress in agriculture and the growth of commerce are thoroughly examined, as are the political and social histories of feudal Europe. Claster loks particularly closely at monasticism, the cultural influence of religion, and the revival of learning. She probes the problems faced by Jews in a predominantly Christian society, and contemplates as well the problems faced by women.

Book Synopsis Cultures of Eschatology by : Veronika Wieser
Download or read book Cultures of Eschatology written by Veronika Wieser and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-07-20 with total page 1181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In all religions, in the medieval West as in the East, ideas about the past, the present and the future were shaped by expectations related to the End. The volumes Cultures of Eschatology explore the many ways apocalyptic thought and visions of the end intersected with the development of pre-modern religio-political communities, with social changes and with the emergence of new intellectual and literary traditions. The two volumes present a wide variety of case studies from the early Christian communities of Antiquity, through the times of the Islamic invasion and the Crusades and up to modern receptions, from the Latin West to the Byzantine Empire, from South Yemen to the Hidden Lands of Tibetan Buddhism. Examining apocalypticism, messianism and eschatology in medieval Christian, Islamic, Hindu and Buddhist communities, the contributions paint a multi-faceted picture of End-Time scenarios and provide their readers with a broad array of source material from different historical contexts. The first volume, Empires and Scriptural Authorities, examines the formation of literary and visual apocalyptic traditions, and the role they played as vehicles for defining a community’s religious and political enemies. The second volume, Time, Death and Afterlife, focuses on key topics of eschatology: death, judgment, afterlife and the perception of time and its end. It also analyses modern readings and interpretations of eschatological concepts.

Book Synopsis The Story of Us Humans, from Atoms to Today's Civilization by : Robert Dalling
Download or read book The Story of Us Humans, from Atoms to Today's Civilization written by Robert Dalling and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2006-03 with total page 726 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Story of Us Humans explains human nature and human history, including the origins of our species, emotions, behavior, morals, and society. It explains what we are, how we got here, and where we are today by describing the origin, history, and current ways of our neighborhoods, religion, government, science, technology, and business. Written in plain language, it explains what astronomy, physics, geology, biology, chemistry, anthropology, history, religion, social science, and political science tell us about ourselves. Most everyone feels that human success is measured in terms of healthy and happy children and communities. Human thoughts and actions involve little besides love and children, spouse and family, community and justice because we are parenting mammals and social primates. Each of us simply wants to laugh and joke with our family and friends, pursue life, raise children and strive to be a valued and contributing member of our community. We have made incredible progress building civilization in just a few hundred generations using nothing except our animal minds. Have you wondered: * What are the laws of nature and how many laws are there? * How did molecular life begin and then evolve into worms fish, amphibians, reptiles, mammals, primates, and humans? * What are the differences between these animals? * How did we get from the Big Bang to bacteria and on to Christianity, democracy, and globalization? * What is life like for gatherer-hunters? * When did we first become farmers and first build cities, and what was life like at those times? * What was life like in Ancient Mesopotamia, Ancient Athens, 13th-century Cahokia, Medieval China and Europe, 19th-Century New England, Yoruban villages, and in the U.S. during the 1920s? * What was the Industrial Revolution and how has it changed our lives? * What are the Hindu, Muslim, Confucian, Jewish, Christian, Buddhist, and Humanist religions and world views? * How have our wages, infant mortality rates, lifespans, crime rates, and poverty and inequality rates varied through the ages? * What are the biggest economic and social secrets in the U.S. today? * What are some meaningful goals and priorities for our civilization and how can we measure the success of our attempts to reach those goals? Includes questions, index, bibliography, and 1,200 internet links taking you to images, videos, and discussed documents.
Book Synopsis The Past And Future Of Law by : E.O. Blunsom
Download or read book The Past And Future Of Law written by E.O. Blunsom and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-04 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in our nations, but what other nations do may affect us, and sometimes immensely. We are all members of the world community of people living in our dangerous world. The purpose of the following book is to consider the laws and practices that govern our nations and, through them, our world. It builds on the premise that unless we change and improve our laws, the human race may not survive in the future. It is not about any particular nation, but about all nations. Many citizens believe their nations are ideal, providing freedom and justice, and with governments representative of the people. This may be true in their minds and according to their beliefs, but the dangers and sufferings of the world continue. They are the concern of us all because they affect all people. The world has changed vastly from the past. It is technically more advanced, but also more dangerous because of nuclear and other deadly weapons and widespread poverty and diseases in overgrown populations. The past, in spite of its myriad wars and premature deaths, has survived. Can our present world, using the same instruments power nations, "positive laws" strictly enforced, retaliations, and harsh punishments also survive? The answer may be an unequivocal no reverberating through future power wars. We need a fresh outlook, different laws, and a new phase of global society to replace the past. Legal philosophers have proclaimed many varieties of laws, including "eternal laws" provided by God and "natural laws" according to human nature. Most are nonenforced laws that they say, "Ought to be." "Positive laws" are those that exist, made and enforced by nations.
Book Synopsis This Is My Body by : Michal Andrzej Kobialka
Download or read book This Is My Body written by Michal Andrzej Kobialka and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2009-12-22 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recipient of the annual Award for Outstanding Book in Theatre Practice and Pedagogy from the Association for Theatre in Higher Education, This Is My Body realigns representational practices in the early Middle Ages with current debates on the nature of representation. Michal Kobialkai's study views the medieval concept of representation as having been in flux and crossed by different modes of seeing, until it was stabilized by the constitutions of the Fourth Lateran Council in 1215. Kobialka argues that the concept of representation in the early Middle Ages had little to do with the tradition that considers representation in terms of Aristotle or Plato; rather, it was enshrined in the interpretation of Hoc est corpus meum [This is my body] -- the words spoken by Christ to the apostles at the Last Supper -- and in establishing the visibility of the body of Christ that had disappeared from view. Michal Kobialka is Professor in the Department of Theatre Arts and Dance at the University of Minnesota.

Book Synopsis Charlemagne, Muhammad, and the Arab Roots of Capitalism by : Gene William Heck
Download or read book Charlemagne, Muhammad, and the Arab Roots of Capitalism written by Gene William Heck and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2008-08-22 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presented in six principal analytic chapters with supporting appendices, this book explores the role of Islam in precipitating Europe’s twelfth century commercial renaissance. Employing the classic analytic techniques of economics, Gene Heck determines that medieval Europe’s feudal interregnum was largely caused by indigenous governmental business regulation and not by shifts in international trade patterns. He then proceeds by demonstrating how Islamic economic precepts provided the ideological rationales that empowered medieval Europe to escape its three-centuries-long experiment in “Dark Age economics” ― in the process, providing the West with its archetypic tools of capitalism. While treatises such as Maxime Rodinson’s excellent book, Islam and Capitalism, document the capitalistic nature of the Islamic economic system, in applying modern economic method to medieval orientalist historiography, this work is unique in capturing both the evolution and the impact of the system’s role in forging medieval history.

Book Synopsis Building Prosperity by : Gene W. Heck
Download or read book Building Prosperity written by Gene W. Heck and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2007 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout history, civilized advance has been propelled by man's pursuit of profit motive and financed by "surplus capital" won in that pursuit. Success or failure in amassing such capital, in turn, has invariably been a function of the economic and legal frameworks within which that quest has taken place. In Building Prosperity, Heck explains the vital lessons learned from that history and explores what they posit for 21st century economic governance--producing a cogent message of relevance to public officials, entrepreneurs, and scholars alike.
Book Synopsis AIDS, Fear and Society by : Kenneth J. Doka
Download or read book AIDS, Fear and Society written by Kenneth J. Doka and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2014-05-01 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historically, AIDS is just one of a series of dreaded diseases that have aroused both great fear and irrational actions. The previous diseases, including bubonic plague, syphilis, tuberculosis, leprosy and cancer, have evoked such a sense of dread that rational moves to halt the disease have become compromised.; This text examines the deep sense of fear that AIDS evokes, stigmatizing those who suffer from the disease, as well as their families and caregivers. Until AIDS can be seen for what it actually is - a life-threatening disease - policies providing for humane treatment will not evolve. The book also emphasizes that diseases are more than biological phenomena or individual catastrophes - they are profoundly social events. The ways in which diseases are spread and treated are strongly influenced by larger sociological considerations, and they may have the capacity to change social institutions or society Itself. Rooting Aids In The History Of Diseases, The First Part Of The book reviews the nature, history and responses of earlier dreaded diseases. The next section examines AIDS itself, proposed as the archetypal dreaded disease. Already creating a sense of panic, AIDS is also shown to be a social disease, likely to have significant effects on the social order. Thus, only by containing the epidemic of fear and controlling the resulting irrationality, can the AIDS epidemic be halted.
Book Synopsis Women and Islam by : Ibtissam Bouachrine
Download or read book Women and Islam written by Ibtissam Bouachrine and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2014-05-21 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Muslim women of all ages, economic status, educational backgrounds, sexual orientations, and from different parts of historically Muslim countries suffer the kinds of atrocities that violate common understandings of human rights and are normally denounced as criminal or pathological, yet these actions are sustained because they uphold some religious doctrine or some custom blessed by local traditions. Ironically, while instances of abuse meted out to women and even female children are routine, scholarship about Muslim women in the post 9/11 era has rarely focused attention on them, preferring to speak of women’s agency and resistance. Too few scholars are willing to tell the complicated, and at times harrowing, stories of Muslim women's lives. Women and Islam: Myths, Apologies, and the Limits of Feminist Critique radically rethinks the celebratory discourse constructed around Muslim women’s resistance. It shows instead the limits of such resistance and the restricted agency given women within Islamic societies. The book does not center on a single historical period. Rather, it is organized as a response to five questions that have been central to upholding the 'resistance discourse': What is the impact of the myth of al-Andalus on a feminist critique? What is the feminist utility of Edward Said’s theory of Orientalism? Is Islam compatible with a feminist agenda? To what extent can Islamic institutions, such as the veil, be liberating for women? Will the current Arab uprisings yield significant change for Muslim women? Through examination of these core questions, Bouachrine calls for a shift in the paradigm of discourse about feminism in the Muslim world.
