Here at last is a book by two professional editors to teach writers the techniques of the editing trade that turn promising manuscripts into published novels and short stories. In this completely revised and updated second edition, Renni Browne and Dave King teach you, the writer, how to apply the editing techniques they have developed to your own work. Chapters on dialogue, exposition, point of view, interior monologue, and other techniques take you through the same processes an expert editor would go through to perfect your manuscript. Each point is illustrated with examples, many drawn from the hundreds of books Browne and King have edited.

The desirability of mechanical accuracy is seen in composition--the only effective composition is accurate composition. The outward manifestation of accuracy in composition is accuracy in the mechanics of writing. The writer who is precise about the form of his thinking is particular about the form of his composition. Book Synopsis The Mechanics of Writing (Classic Reprint) by : Edwin Campbell Woolley
Download or read book The Mechanics of Writing (Classic Reprint) written by Edwin Campbell Woolley and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mechanics of Writing In order to write English in a way that befits an educated person, one must know a certain body of rules. The term rules is here used in a wide sense, including not only general precepts, such as the dictum that in a sentence "every part should be subservient to one principal affirmation," but also those numerous particular precepts which refuse to merge themselves into convenient generalizations - for instance, those to the effect that it is bad English to say "I devote my evenings in study" for "I devote my evenings to study," that the verb except should not be used in the sense of accept, nor the noun principle in the sense of the adjective principal, and that all right should be written as two words, the first spelled with two l's. When I say that one must know these rules, I mean that one must not merely be acquainted with them, but habitually observe them. Some of these rules are known and followed by nearly every person who has grown up in an English-speaking community. Nearly every such person knows, for example, the correct meaning of several hundred English words (that is to say, he knows several hundred rules directing how these words should be used); knows how to spell certain words, fewer than those which he knows how to use; and knows that the pronoun I and such nouns as John, Mary, Smith, and Jones should be capitalized. But ignorance of many other rules - which might easily be enumerated if there were any need - is shared by children in the grammar school, boys and girls in high school, high-school graduates of recent and of long standing, college freshmen, college seniors, bachelors and masters of arts, and members of the learned professions. Book Synopsis Schools for All Kinds of Minds by : Mary-Dean Barringer
Download or read book Schools for All Kinds of Minds written by Mary-Dean Barringer and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-03-29 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows how schools can--and must--develop expertise in "learning variation" (understanding how different kinds of minds learn) and apply this knowledge to classroom instruction in order to address the chronic learning challenges and achievement gap faced by millions of students. Barringer shows how using what we know about learning variation with a focus on discovering learning strengths, not just deficits, can help schools create plans for success for those students who often find it elusive. The book specifically addresses how school leaders can incorporate this knowledge into instructional practice and school-level policy through various professional development strategies. Schools for All Kinds of Minds: Provides a readable synthesis of the latest research from neuroscience, cognitive science, and child and adolescent development as it relates to understanding learning and its many variations. Links this information to strategies for understanding struggling learners and adapting school practices to accommodate a wider array of learning differences in a classroom. Demonstrates how this understanding of learning variation can change the way teachers and others help students succeed in various academic and content areas and acquire necessary 21st century skills. Includes discussion questions and facilitator guidelines for staff developers and teacher education programs; downloadable forms that accompany exercises from within the book; an action plan for schools to implement the ideas found in the book; and more.
Book Synopsis The Mechanics of Creative Writing by : Ben Bennetts
Download or read book The Mechanics of Creative Writing written by Ben Bennetts and published by . This book was released on 2018-05-02 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you fancy yourself as a creative writer? Do you enjoy composing great works of literary art-meticulous texts, elegant e-mails, scathing or amusing letters to an editor, scintillating blogs, entertaining short stories, erudite reference books, unputdownable novels? Is there even such a word as unputdownable? (There is now!)Is your grammar up to scratch? Do you copy edit your own compositions? Did you know there are no officially-sanctioned rules for English grammar? There is, however, a multitude of opinions on what constitutes correct usage, incorrect usage, and usage that will attract attention-to boldly go springs to mind.I use what I call the bish-bash-bosh style of creative writing: bish the words down into a Word file, bash them around, and bosh them to perfection. If this is your writing style, do you know how to manipulate your embryonic text into its final magnificent form using the hidden powers of Microsoft Word (Styles, Paragraph Marker, Find and Replace, Spellcheck and Autocorrect)? How about graphics? Do you understand the copyright infringement perils of copying and using images, and text, from websites for use in your scholarly production? Finally, when you've finished creating, do you know how to self-publish as an e-book, or even as a something-to-be-proud-of paperback or hardback book?So many questions; so little time. Read this book and gain a head start into the heady world of creative writing and self-publishing.
