This book was released on 2006-05-11 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A good understanding of turbulent compressible flows is essential to the design and operation of high-speed vehicles. Such flows occur, for example, in the external flow over the surfaces of supersonic aircraft, and in the internal flow through the engines. Our ability to predict the aerodynamic lift, drag, propulsion and maneuverability of high-speed vehicles is crucially dependent on our knowledge of turbulent shear layers, and our understanding of their behavior in the presence of shock waves and regions of changing pressure. Turbulent Shear Layers in Supersonic Flow provides a comprehensive introduction to the field, and helps provide a basis for future work in this area. Wherever possible we use the available experimental work, and the results from numerical simulations to illustrate and develop a physical understanding of turbulent compressible flows.

Book excerpt: Since the inaugural symposium at the Pennsylvania State University in 1977, the venues for the series of biennial symposia on turbulent shear flows have alternated between the USA and Europe. For the Sixth Symposium, the first to be held in France, the city of Toulouse proved a natura] choice, being a centre for the aerospace industry, meteorological research and higher education. The meeting was hosted by the Paul Sabatier University on the southern perimeter of the city, and there nearly 300 workers in the field of turbulence converged to pronounce upon, debate and absorb the current issues in turbulent shear flows and to enjoy the unfailing September sunshine. The meeting had attracted more than 200 offers of papers from which just over 100 full papers and about 20 shorter communications in open forums could be accommodated. The present volume contains 28 of the original symposium presentations selected by the editors. Each contribution has been revised by its authors - sometimes quite extensively -in the light of the oral presentation. It is our hope that the selection provides a substantial statement of permanent interest on current research in the five areas covered by this book, i.e. fundamentals and closures, scalar transport and geophysical flows, aerodynamic flows, complex flows, and numerical simulations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last 25 years, one of the most striking advances in Fluid Mecha nics was certainly the discovery of coherent structures in turbulence: lab oratory experiments and numerical simulations have shown that most turbulent flows exhibit both spatially-organized large-scale structures and disorganized motions, generally at smaller scales. The develop ment of new measurement and visualization techniques have allowed a more precise characterization and investigation of these structures in the laboratory. Thanks to the unprecedented increase of computer power and to the development of efficient interactive three-dimensional colour graphics, computational fluid dynamicists can explore the still myste rious world of turbulence. However, many problems remain unsolved concerning the origin of these structures, their dynamics, and their in teraction with the disorganized motions. In this book will be found the latest results of experimentalists, theoreticians and numerical modellers interested in these topics. These coherent structures may appear on airplane wings or slender bodies, mixing layers, jets, wakes or boundary-layers. In free-shear flows and in boundary layers, the results presented here highlight the intense three-dimensional character of the vortices. The two-dimensional large scale eddies are very sensitive to three-dimensional perturbations, whose amplification leads to the formation of three-dimensional coherent vorti cal structures, such as streamwise, hairpin or horseshoe vortex filaments. This book focuses on modern aspects of turbulence study. Relations between turbulence theory and optimal control theory in mathematics are discussed. This may have important applications with regard to, e. g. , numerical weather forecasting.
Book Synopsis Propagation of Waves in Shear Flows by : Anatoli? L?vovich Fabrikant
Download or read book Propagation of Waves in Shear Flows written by Anatoli? L?vovich Fabrikant and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1998 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A number of well-known theorems of the hydrodynamic theory of stability are interpreted in terms of the interaction of the waves having different energy signs. Attention is drawn to the plasma-hydrodynamic analogy, which is a powerful tool for physical analyses of general mechanisms of wave amplification and absorption in flows. Various wave-flow interaction problems are considered, for instance, sound generation in whistlers, wave scattering and amplification by vortices, methods of wave remote sounding, and some nonlinear dynamical and chaotic phenomena.

Book excerpt: The present book contains papers that have been selected from contributions to the First International Symposium on Turbulent Shear Flows which was held from the 18th to 20th April 1977 at The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania, USA. Attend ees from close to 20 countries presented over 100 contributions at this meeting in which many aspects of the current activities in turbulence research were covered. Five topics received particular attention at the Symposium: Free Flows Wall Flows Recirculating Flows Developments in Reynolds Stress Closures New Directions in Modeling This is also reflected in the five chapters of this book with contributions from research workers from different countries. Each chapter covers the most valuable contributions of the conference to the particular chapter topic. Of course, there were many additional good con tributions to each subject at the meeting but the limitation imposed on the length of this volume required that a selection be made. The realization of the First International Symposium on Turbulent Shear Flows was p- sible by the general support of: U. S. Army Research Office U. S. Navy Research Office Continuing Education Center of The Pennsylvania State University The conference organization was carried out by the organizing committee consisting of: F. Book Synopsis Singular Perturbation and Turbulent Shear Flow Near Walls by : Francis E. Fendell
Download or read book Singular Perturbation and Turbulent Shear Flow Near Walls written by Francis E. Fendell and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The method of matched asymptotic expansions is applied to fully turbulent shear flow near walls in the limit of an appropriately defined Reynolds number tending to infinity. In particular, turbulent pipe/channel flow and boundary-layer flow on a flat plate with an external pressure gradient upstream of any separation is examined. The relevant Reynolds number is the ratio of the turbulent stress to the Newtonian stress. For the postulated expansions, the logarithmic profile, wall friction law, and classical similarity results are deduced without an explicit closure condition relating theturbulent stress to the Newtonian stress. Continuation to higher order is shown to be in general indeterminate without additional physical input to the formulation. (Author).

Download or read book Instability, Transition, and Turbulence written by M.Y. Hussaini and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Workshop on In stability, Transition and Turbulence, sponsored by the Institute for Computer Applications in Science and Engineering (ICASE) and the NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC), during July 8 to August 2, 1991. This is the second workshop in the series on the subject. The first was held in 1989, and its proceedings were published by Springer-Verlag under the title "Instability and Transition" edited by M. Y. Hussaini and R. G. Voigt. The objectives of these work shops are to i) expose the academic community to current technologically im portant issues of transition and turbulence in shear flows over the entire speed range, ii) acquaint the academic community with the unique combination of theoretical, computational and experimental capabilities at LaRC and foster interaction with these capabilities, and iii) accelerate progress in elucidating the fundamental phenomena of transition and turbulence, leading to improved transition and turbulence modeling in design methodologies. The research areas covered in these proceedings include receptiv ity and roughness, nonlinear theories of transition, numerical simu lation of spatially evolving flows, modelling of transitional and fully turbulent flows as well as some experiments on instability and tran sition. In addition a one-day mini-symposium was held to discuss 1 recent and planned experiments on turbulent flow over a backward facing step.

Download or read book Turbulent Shear Flows 8 written by Franz Durst and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains a selection of the papers presented at the Eighth Symposium on Turbulent Shear Flows held at the Technical University of Munich, 9-11 September 1991. The first of these biennial international symposia was held at the Pennsylvania State Uni versity, USA, in 1977; subsequent symposia have been held at Imperial College, London, England; the University of California, Davis, USA; the University of Karlsruhe, Ger many; Cornell University, Ithaca, USA; the Paul Sabatier University, Toulouse, France; and Stanford University, California, USA. The purpose of this series of symposia is to provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of new developments in the field of turbulence, especially as related to shear flows of importance in engineering and geo physics. From the 330 extended abstracts submitted for this symposium, 145 papers were presented orally and 60 as posters. Out of these, we have selected twenty-four papers for inclusion in this volume, each of which has been revised and extended in accordance with the editors' recommendations. The following four theme areas were selected after consideration of the quality of the contributions, the importance of the area, and the selection made in earlier volumes: - wall flows, - separated flows, - compressibility effects, - buoyancy, rotation, and curvature effects. As in the past, each section corresponding to the above areas begins with an introduction by an authority in the field that places the individual contributions in context with one another and with related research.
