Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crystallization is an important separation and purification process used in industries ranging from bulk commodity chemicals to specialty chemicals and pharmaceuticals. In recent years, a number of environmental applications have also come to rely on crystallization in waste treatment and recycling processes. The authors provide an introduction to the field of newcomers and a reference to those involved in the various aspects of industrial crystallization. It is a complete volume covering all aspects of industrial crystallization, including material related to both fundamentals and applications. This new edition presents detailed material on crystallization of biomolecules, precipitation, impurity-crystal interactions, solubility, and design. Provides an ideal introduction for industrial crystallization newcomers Serves as a worthwhile reference to anyone involved in the fieldCovers all aspects of industrial crystallization in a single, complete volume
Book Synopsis Shaped Crystal Growth by : V.A. Tatarchenko
Download or read book Shaped Crystal Growth written by V.A. Tatarchenko and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1993-08-31 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The monograph "Shaped Crystal Growth" by V. A. Tatarchenko is the first systematic of the macroscopic crystallization theory. The theory is based on the stable statement growth conception, which means that self-stabilization is present in the system, with growth parameter deviations occurring under the action of external perturbations attenuating with time. The crystallization rate is one of the parameters responsible for crystal defect formation. Steady-state crystal growth means that crystallization rate internal stabilization is present, thus allowing more perfect crystals to grow. Most important is the fact that the crystal shape (an easily observed parameter) is one of the stable-growth characteristics when growing crystals without any contact with the crucible walls. This means that constant-cross-section crystal growth is to a certain extent evidence of crystallization process stability. The principles of the stable crystal growth theory were developed by the author of the monograph in the early 1970s. Due to the efforts over the past 20 years of V. A. Tatarchenko, his disciples (V. A. Borodin, S. K. Brantov, E. A. Brener, G. I. Romanova, G. A. Satunkin et al) and his followers (B. L. Timan, 0. V. Kolotiy et al) the theory has been completed, which is demonstrated by this monograph. The characteristic feature of the theory is its trend towards solving practical problems that occur in the process of crystal growth.

Book Synopsis Physical surfaces by : J.J. Bikerman
Download or read book Physical surfaces written by J.J. Bikerman and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical Surfaces deals with the basic concepts of the physics of surfaces, including the nature of the surface pressure of unimolecular films and the equilibrium pressure of these films. The effect of particle size on capillary pressure, the surface energy and the cuticular energy of solids, and the fundamentals of wetting are also examined. This book is comprised of nine chapters and begins with a discussion on the mechanics and physical chemistry of liquid surfaces, with emphasis on capillarity and surface tension. The following chapters focus on liquid-liquid interfaces, foams and emulsions, and solid surfaces. Interfacial tension is analyzed in relation to miscibility and surface tension, along with contact angles in gas-liquid-liquid systems. The chapter on wetting looks at theories of contact angle, its measurement, and hysteresis. Adsorption and electric surface phenomena are also explored, together with adhesion and friction. This monograph will be a valuable resource for physical chemists and physicists.

Book Synopsis Determination of Contact Angles and Surface Tensions with the Quartz Crystal Microbalance by :
Download or read book Determination of Contact Angles and Surface Tensions with the Quartz Crystal Microbalance written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method based on the quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) for measuring the sessile contact angles and surface energies of liquid air and liquid liquid interfaces is described. The method involves measurement of the frequency change accompanying the introduction of a small liquid droplet to the center of a vibrating quartz resonator, which comprises an AT-cut quartz crystal sandwiched between two gold electrodes. If the density and viscosity of the liquid are known, the contact angle between the droplet and the gold substrate surface can be determined directly. QCM measurements of contact angles formed between aqueous droplets and gold surfaces modified with various organosulfur monolayers having different surface energies agree with sessile contact angles determined by optical goniometry. Furthermore, the QCM method can be used to measure the contact angle formed between an aqueous droplet and the QCM surface when both are submerged under an immiscible solvent such as hexadecane. In this case the frequency change relies on the differences in the densities and viscosities of the water droplet and the fluid displaced by the droplet at the surface. The dependence of the contact angle on the concentration of surfactant in the aqueous droplet provides for determination of the critical micelle concentration (CMC) for aqueous phases in contact with air or an immiscible organic fluid. These measurements can be performed under conditions where contact angles cannot be measured readily, such as in the presence of opaque media or in the case of two liquids having similar refractive indices.
