Book excerpt: This study aimed to investigate and further the understanding of how women heal after experienceing intimate partner violence. This resarch explored the use of an art-based intervention called Body and Emotional Mapping to provide insight into how feelings and bodily sensations might help to gauge where participants were in their personal journey of healing, and empower them in the healing process. Research questions included asking where emotional and physical pain is felt and asking for participants to depict one image representing the narrative of their past and another of their hopes for the future. Intepretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) was used to provide the appropriate framework for the research, while tenets of Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), art, and narrative therapy were used as a theoretical basis for the study. Significant findings highlighted by the study were the differences in healing for women who had experienced different forms of abuse and trauma, a finding supported by previous research. The differences in healing for women who expereinced physical, psychological (verbal, emotional, etc.) abuse or a combination of the two was noticed, and this was chosen as a theme to be further explored. The results showed that Body and Emotional Mapping is an impactful experience for women who have experienced intimate partner violence. Each participant became conscious of insightful information that shed light on where she was on her journey in healing from intimate partner violence.
