Download or read book The Poorhouse written by David Wagner and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2005-01-17 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of us grew up hearing our parents exclaim 'you are driving me to the poorhouse!' or remember the card in the 'Monopoly' game which says 'Go to the Poorhouse! Lose a Turn!' Yet most Americans know little or nothing of this institution that existed under a variety of names for approximately three hundred years of American history. Surprisingly these institutions variously named poorhouses, poor farms, sometimes almshouses or workhouses, have received rather scant academic treatment, as well, though tens of millions of poor people were confined there, while often their neighbors talked in hushed tones and in fear of their own fate at the 'specter of the poorhouse.' Based on the author's study of six New England poorhouses/poor farms, a hidden story in America's history is presented which will be of popular interest as well as useful as a text in social welfare and social history. While the poorhouse's mission was character reform and 'repressing pauperism,' these goals were gradually undermined by poor people themselves, who often learned to use the poorhouse for their own benefit, as well as by staff and officials of the houses, who had agendas sometimes at odds with the purposes for which the poorhouse was invented.

Download or read book Homelessness in America written by Michele Wakin and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2022-02-18 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title provides a one-stop resource for understanding the crisis of homelessness in the United States. It covers risk factors for homelessness, societal attitudes about the homeless, and public and private resources designed to prevent homelessness and help those in need. There are a number of questions to be answered when addressing the subject of homelessness in the United States. What are the primary causes of homelessness? What are the economic and socioeconomic factors that have an impact on homeless people? What demographic trends can be identified in homeless populations? Is the U.S. addressing the needs and concerns of homeless people adequately? Where are the areas with the highest homeless populations? What can be done to help homeless people who live with mental illness and/or addiction problems? Homelessness in America: A Reference Handbook answers all of these questions and more. It thoroughly examines the history of homelessness in the U.S., shining a light on the key issues, events, policies, and attitudes that contribute to homelessness and shape the experience of being homeless. It places special emphasis on exploring the myriad problems that force people into homelessness, such as inadequate levels of affordable housing, struggles with substance abuse, and gaps in the U.S.' social welfare system. In addition, it explains why some demographic groups are at heightened risk of homelessness.

Book excerpt: Meet Henry Henry: a bumbling recluse on a quest to gather mementos from the abandoned national parks of what used to be the United States of America. The year is 2034, and state secessions, the return of reservation lands to indigenous tribes, and frequent natural disasters make movement complicated. White nationalists and rogue vigilantes make it dangerous. But in Oxford, Mississippi, Henry Henry will meet a young man named Billy Faulkner who is on his own quest to find purpose in this mid-apocalyptic landscape... A WALK IN THE WOODS meets STATION ELEVEN, AFTER COUNTRY explores the America we just might become if we aren’t careful, along with the curiosity, empathy, and courage we will need to recover if we want to survive it.
