When rigidly defended, they limit us; yet as they become more flexible, they can reveal sources of animation, renewal and authenticity. The Matrix and Meaning of Character guides the reader into an awareness of the archetypal depths that underlie character structures, presenting an original developmental model in which current analytic theories are synthesised. The authors examine nine character structures, animating them with fairy tales, mythic images and case material, creating a bridge between the traditional language of psychopathology and the universal realm of image and symbol. This book will appeal to all analytical psychologists, psychoanalysts and psychotherapists who want to strengthen their clinical expertise. It will help clinicians to extend their clinical insights beyond a strictly behavioural, medical or cognitive approach, revealing the potential of the human spirit.

Book excerpt: Character, being the quality of one's personality, has a considerable influence on a person's day-to-day living. Unfortunately, few people can define the term character, and fewer still are conscious of their own characters and the impact they have on their social, professional or occupational interactions. This book of about 20,000 words is designed to help the reader clearly understand the meaning of the term character, grasp how character is acquired or formed, how it is developed, and how it is improved or reformed, if necessary. Good and bad characters are sampled, and the advantages of a good character plus the risks of a bad one are discussed. It has a section where the author narrates some illustrative short stories which enhance the reader's understanding of the book's content. One Amazon reviewer described the book as "Fantastic." She added, "...This book goes into detail about how a person's character can affect every aspect of their personal and professional life, and it then describes how a person can alter or improve their character, and when they might need to do so. It really helped me begin to understand things about my life that I had never given a second thought to, and I think it offers valuable information about becoming a better person and paying more attention to our actions (and the consequences thereof)."The author hopes it will be a valuable resource to the reader as they seek their place in the world.Happy reading.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, Dresden Technical University (Institut Amerikanistik), course: American Noir, language: English, abstract: When the movie The Matrix commences, the audience has the impression to have stepped back into the late 1930s or 1940s. With its very conventional beginning of a noir narrative, The Matrix, which was directed by the brothers Andy and Larry Wachowski in 1999, provides the viewer with all the characteristics of a typical film noir: the setting of this first sequence is shot at night; it is dark and gloomy. We see a group of police officers in uniforms storming a building in order to arrest one woman. Not until that very ‘fugitive on the run’ fights back and escapes by implementing some rather incredulous astonishing fighting, we realize that this movie is not going to be in the past but in the future. The Matrix is often referred to as a futuristic, film noir, utopian science-fiction movie – a movie, which is innovative in its design and its special digital techniques. Containing plenty of characteristics of the classical film noir, which I am going to describe in the course of this seminar paper, the recipients witness in The Matrix a revival of the themes of the classical film noir. For that reason, it will be of interest in which way elements and motifs of film noir have changed to neo film noir, and to what extend we will find old and new noirish features in The Matrix. Additionally, I am going to analyze the plot as well as the character development of the main protagonists, their relationship to each other and their meaning for the film’s progress. Not only do I want to examine the film’s plot points in terms of their significance for the movie’s development, but also will I focus on misé-en-scene and the technical devices, which definitely set milestones in the history of film making.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Should we feel inadequate for failing to be healthy, balanced, and well-adjusted? Is such an existential equilibrium realistic or even desirable? Condemning our cultural obsession with cheerfulness and “positive thinking,” Mari Ruti calls for a resurrection of character that honors our more eccentric frequencies, arguing that sometimes the most tormented and anxiety-ridden life can also be the most rewarding. Ruti critiques our current search for personal meaning and the pragmatic attempt to normalize human beings’ unruly and idiosyncratic natures. Exposing the tragic banality of a happy life commonly lived, she instead emphasizes the advantages of a lopsided life rich in passion and fortitude. Ruti shows what counts is not our ability to evade existential uncertainty but to meet adversity in such a way that we do not become irrevocably broken. We are in danger of losing the capacity to cope with complexity, ambiguity, melancholia, disorientation, and disappointment, leaving us feeling less “real,” less connected, and unable to metabolize a full range of emotions. Heeding the call of our character may mean acknowledging the marginalized, chaotic aspects of our being, for they carry a great deal of creative energy. Ruti shows it is precisely this energy that makes us inimitable and irreplaceable.

Book excerpt: Politicians, preachers, and ordinary people speak often of character; psychologists study 'personality', used as a term of art with meanings close to `character'. Most ethical philosophers in the last 200 years, however, have said little about it. This book attempts to understand it and to refocus ethical philosophy so that character is central.

Book excerpt: "Character" is a self-help book written by Samuel Smiles, a Scottish author and reformer, and first published in 1871. Samuel Smiles was a proponent of the philosophy of self-help and believed in the power of individual effort and character development as a means to achieve personal success and contribute to the betterment of society. In "Character," Smiles explores the significance of personal character in shaping one's destiny. The book is a collection of biographical sketches and anecdotes featuring individuals who, through their strong moral character, perseverance, and industriousness, achieved success and made positive contributions to their communities. Key themes and ideas in "Character" include: Self-Reliance: Smiles emphasizes the importance of self-reliance and individual initiative. He argues that relying on one's own abilities and taking responsibility for one's actions are crucial elements of building a strong character. Perseverance and Hard Work: The book underscores the value of hard work and perseverance in the face of challenges. Smiles presents examples of individuals who overcame adversity through determination and a strong work ethic. Integrity and Morality: "Character" promotes the idea that personal integrity and moral values are foundational to building a strong character. Smiles advocates for honesty, integrity, and ethical behavior as essential components of a successful and fulfilling life. Role Models: The book features biographical sketches of various historical figures, scientists, inventors, and social reformers whose exemplary characters serve as role models for readers. These stories are intended to inspire and provide practical insights into the development of good character. Social Responsibility: While emphasizing individual effort, Smiles also discusses the idea that individuals with strong characters have a responsibility to contribute positively to society. He highlights the idea that personal success should be accompanied by a sense of duty toward others. "Character" is part of Samuel Smiles's larger body of work in the genre of self-help literature, which gained popularity during the Victorian era. The book reflects the prevailing Victorian values of hard work, self-discipline, and moral rectitude. While some aspects of Smiles's philosophy may be seen as reflective of the values of his time, "Character" remains a historical and influential work in the self-help genre, offering insights into the principles of personal development and success.
