Book excerpt: Is it possible that I was once a woman who lived first in New Orleans, then in New York City in the 1800s? The next nine chapters chronicle the life and times of a woman by the name of Sarah Anne Wells, who was later in her lifetime known as Sunflower. Most of the information within this biography has been given to me through messages in the form of synchronistic coincidence and spiritual readings, private prayer and meditation, hypnotic past-life regression session, spirit photographs, and through meeting many people in this life whom I am sure were a part of my past lifetime. Ive had many dreams later come true. Ive also been given little physical gifts that are difficult to explain as just coincidence. These gifts were given to me from someone on the other side of the looking glass. Once I accepted the possibility that it was possible to communicate with those on the other side of this reality, the memories of Sarahs life came to me quite easily. They continue to this day. As I wrote each chapter of her life, she began to feel very real to me. I began to hear her voice, feel how her clothing felt next to her skin, and see her image in my minds mirror. Born into slavery then sold into prostitution, I learned through many messages how difficult it was for her to just survive. My reason for putting all of these messages from Spirit into words is simple. If by reading my book, it provides some comfort and hope, then all the efforts by not only me but all those on the other side of reality, has meaning. WE ARE ONE

To us and to thousands of others in the Motherland he was a teacher, father, mother, friend and more than all that, he was life and light – a ray of the Spiritual Sun that shone at Dakshineswar.Bhagavan Sri Ramakrishna was the perfect embodiment of the Sanatana Dharma, the Religion Eternal. Each one of His direct disciples, while giving to the world His great message of the Harmony of all Religions, embodied in himself, a part of the highest ideal of the Master's All-sided Perfection.Sri Swami Nirmalanandaji embodied the ideal of purity, and he naturally represented the strength and fearlessness resulting' from that purity. The Gospel of Strength is what the world in general, and India in particular, needs most at this present epoch. "His Life and Teachings" have therefore a special value now, and the publishers feel confident that the readers will get the needed inspiration from the soul-stirring example and the life-giving words of this Spiritual Hero.

Book excerpt: The story of men who become rich is not uncommon. But it is rare to find the story of a man who rose from the very lowest rank in society, a member of a despised caste known as the chattel slave, to a position among the greatest, as a renowned missionary and lecturer. BORN THREE TIMES is a truly inspiring narrative of human potential and capacity. Thomas Johnson depicts his life under slavery and his life as a free man. The great change in condition, from prisoner to world traveller, from an insignificant "nobody" to celebrated evangelist and speaker - all this seems to be fiction, but it is absolutely true. He describes his slow steps in education. Tasks which other people conquer in childhood, such as learning the alphabet, he must deal with as an adult. Scenes of life which are taken for granted by the free-born, are challenging and unnerving to those who had lived in bondage. Further, Johnson reveals the many complex feelings he had about people and places. In something that is rare in books of this kind, he even discloses the secret opinions he and other slaves held of different cultures. England was considered by them to be the greatest nation in the world, because Queen Victoria had done so much to liberate the oppressed. Although he acknowledged that as a black man his racial homeland was in Africa, he appears to have felt surprisingly limited resonance with the culture he encountered during his missionary work there. Johnson made what was at the time a very audacious decision, to move his family overseas to Europe. He felt his real place was in England, a land with which he had absolutely no racial, ethnic or cultural affiliations. He makes clear his reason: the widespread prejudice in America, North and South, that existed against former slaves made his life intolerable. However, he noted that this prejudice was not as evident against those blacks visiting from other nations-an interesting comment on the peculiar nature of racism. Johnson believed that there would be less racism amongst people who had never tolerated slavery in their own country. One indeed detects in his writing a genuine warmth towards the people of his new home, an intangible feeling he cannot explain.

Book excerpt: Making ingenious use of a wide variety of sources, and old as well as modern technical resources, Kenneth Dean and Zheng Zhenman here set a new standard for an histoire totale for a coherently well-defined cultural region in China. At the same time it deals in-depth with the ongoing negotiation of modernity in Chinese village rituals. Over the past thirty years, local popular religion has been revived and re-invented in the villages of the irrigated alluvial plain of Putian, Fujian, China. Volume 1 provides a historical introduction to the formation of 153 regional ritual alliances made up of 724 villages. Early popular cults, Ming lineages, Qing multi-village alliances, late Qing spirit-medium associations, 20th century state attacks on local religion, and the role of Overseas Chinese and local communities in rebuilding the temple networks are discussed. Volume 2 surveys the current population, lineages, temples, gods, and annual rituals of these villages. Maps of each ritual alliance, the distribution of major cults and lineages, are included. Book excerpt: On the hypothesis that we are all born to be hunters and that life is one big hunting trip, then my first book, Planting Seeds: the Early Years could be equated to Hunting for Dummies. In Book 2, Laying Down Roots: the Intermediate Years my hunts unfold as I alternate from pursuing big game such as a life partner, a career, self-esteem and meaningfulness, to small game like rest areas, a runners high, vacations or fun, while in search of my ultimate prey - self-actualization. In my quest I will be periodically called upon to pull into a service station to rebalance and realign myself and then gas up before proceeding. There will be times when I push myself to exhaustion, on the brink of a complete breakdown, only to find a saving fork in the road. When faced with adversity will I choose flight, fight, freeze or something else? Youll need to read to find out.
