Book excerpt: The Master List Uncovered is based upon Michael Dewar's pastoral preaching and teachings over the years; it is an encouragement to believers, to be steadfast in their faith. But it is primarily a trumpet call to people everywhere─Christians, Gentiles, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists and especially those without a religious faith─ to urgently contemplate their end-of-life destination, and make the necessary change now by accepting God's redemptive offer of eternal life. The compelling message of the book is that every human being will spend his or her eternity in one of two destinations and that destination choice must be made before physical death occurs or it will be made by default. The default choice guarantees eternal death but the conscious, deliberate choice of redemption guarantees eternal life in a hilariously happy place. A person without a chosen end-of life destination is a candidate for the eternal Lake of Burning Sulfur by default. You are listed in one of God's two record books: the book of life or the book of wrath. Your listing determines your eternal destination. The good news is, you can change your listing and destination but the time to act is now.

Book excerpt: Parallel Virtual Machine (PVM) and Message Passing Interface (MPI) are the most frequently used tools for programming according to the message passing paradigm, which is considered one of the best ways to develop parallel applications. This volume comprises 67 revised contributions presented at the Sixth European PVM/MPI Users' Group Meeting, which was held in Barcelona, Spain, 26-29 September 1999. The conference was organized by the Computer Science Department of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. This conference has been previously held in Liverpool, UK (1998) and Cracow, Poland (1997). The first three conferences were devoted to PVM and were held at the TU Munich, Germany (1996), ENS Lyon, France (1995), and University of Rome (1994). This conference has become a forum for users and developers of PVM, MPI, and other message passing environments. Interaction between those groups has proved to be very useful for developing new ideas in parallel computing and for applying some of those already existent to new practical fields.

Book excerpt: The HAZOP Leader’s Handbook is designed specifically to help HAZOP leaders plan and execute successful HAZOP studies, based on the author’s many years of experience of participating in, observing and facilitating HAZOP studies, as well as observing, training, mentoring and assessing HAZOP leaders. The book assumes that the reader understands the methodology and has experienced HAZOP meetings and does not seek to explain the methodology itself. Rather, it focuses on the application of the methodology and the responsibilities and skills of the HAZOP leader in the preparation, execution and reporting of the study. Although the principal subject is HAZOP, much of the content equally applies to other facilitated hazard identification techniques such as Hazard Identification (HAZID) or Failure Modes Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA). The prime purpose of this book is to provide guidance specific to HAZOP leaders to help them to maximise the effectiveness of their HAZOP studies, thereby getting the most benefit from the methodology, promoting consistency and rigour in its application and sustaining its well-earned reputation. Includes HAZOP leader’s responsibilities and competence requirements and how to plan, prepare and manage a HAZOP study from its conception through to delivery of the final report Describes current best practice in the application of the HAZOP technique Explains the role of the HAZOP leader as a facilitator of study meetings using examples of facilitation techniques Discusses ways in which the leader can maximize the effectiveness of HAZOP technique in identifying and analyzing process hazards

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Actor Uncovered is certainly not a set of rigid rules advocating one "method" or one singular "truth." Departing from the common guidebook format, Michael Howard uses a unique approach to teaching acting, reflecting on his own history and sharing his own experiences as an actor, director, and teacher. How he writes about the process and craft of acting is at once intensely personal and relatable by others. Readers are invited to participate as though present in this master teacher's classes. Each human being, and thus each actor, is unique. Howard encourages actors to uncover their own ways of working, using their particular abilities and personality traits. Going beyond the craft and into human psychology and the importance of acting as a life force, readers will see new and deeper ways to study and practice, to be introspective, and to arrive at places of revelation about their craft. The Actor Uncovered will have much to say to beginners, to those who are advanced, and to professional and working actors. Howard discusses such topics as: Techniques, styles, and methods in a changing society Relaxation, concentration, and the breath The relationships among actor, director, and writer Memory On camera versus on stage Obstacles After more than seventy years as a professional actor, director, and teacher, Howard shows how living creatively and invoking one's own personality can lead to a successful career as an actor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: University faculty members describe their collaborative projects with other faculty members, rsearchers, graduate students, professional educators, and other stakeholders in the educational enterprise. Through descriptions of several collaborative projects, the chapters explore some of the less explicitly articulated aspects of collaborative ventures. The authors use a variety of conceptual frameworks, derived from a number of disciplines including education and business, to deconstruct collaboration and to further undernstand its elements, issues, dynamics, and problematics. By confronting the challenges of building genuine and effective collaborative partnerships across institutions and cultures and by examining how the personal and the professional intertwine within the process, the book extends and deepens the dialogue about such partnerships. Collaboration is presented as a deeply personal and professionally challenging enterprise that offers satisfaction and enrichment when it is undertaken with eyes and minds wide open.

Book excerpt: For more than three decades race relations have been at the forefront of historical research in America. These new essays on race and slavery—some by highly regarded, award-winning veterans in the field and others by talented newcomers—point in fresh directions. They address specific areas of contention even as together they survey important questions across four centuries of social, cultural, and political history. Looking at the institution itself, Robert McColley reconsiders the origins of black slavery in America, while William W. Freehling presents a striking interpretation of the Denmark Vesey slave conspiracy of 1822. In the political arena, William E. Gienapp and Stephen E. Maizlish assess the power of race and slave issues in, respectively, the Republican and Democratic parties of the 1850s. For the Civil War and Reconstruction eras, Reid Mitchell profiles the consciousness of the average Confederate soldier, while Leon F. Litwack explores the tasks facing freed slaves. Arthur Zilversmit switches the perspective to Washington with a reevaluation of Grant's commitments to the freedmen. Essays on the twentieth century focus on the South. James Oakes traces the rising fortunes of the supposedly vanquished planter class as it entered this century. Moving to more recent times, John G. Sproat looks at the role of South Carolina's white moderates during the struggle over segregation in the late 1950s and early 1960s and their failure at Orangeburg in 1968. Finally, Joel Williamson assesses what the loss of slavery has meant to southern culture in the 120 years since the end of the Civil War. A wide-ranging yet cohesive exploration, New Perspectives on Race and Slavery in America takes on added significance as a volume that honors Kenneth M. Stampp, the mentor of all the authors and long considered one of the great modern pioneers in the history of slavery and the Civil War.

Book excerpt: Henry Ford and Charles Lindbergh have long been exalted as two of the greatest American icons of the twentieth century. From award-winning journalist Max Wallace comes groundbreaking and astonishing revelations about the poisonous effect these two so-called American heroes had on Western democracy. In his wide ranging investigation, Wallace goes further than any other historian to expose how Ford and Lindbergh-acting in league with the Nazis-almost brought democratic Europe to the verge of extinction. With unprecedented access to declassified FBI and military intelligence files, Wallace reveals how the close friendship and ideological bond between automotive pioneer Ford and aviator Lindbergh culminated in an abuse of power that helped strengthen Hitler's regime and undermined the Allied war effort. Wallace traces Henry Ford's ties to Nazi Germany back as far as the 1920s, presenting compelling evidence of a financial paper trail proving that Ford subsidized the rise to power of Adolph Hitler, who described Ford as "my inspiration." For the first time, the genesis of Ford's notorious Anti-Semitism is uncovered: The American Axis proves that Ford's private secretary and life-long confidante was a German spy, who channeled his employer's Jew-baiting crusades to further the cause of the Third Reich. Lindbergh's own anti-Semitism and white-Supremacist views captured the attention of the Nazis, who soon manipulated him in their clandestine Fifth Column efforts. As the first unauthorized biographer to gain access to the Lindbergh archives, Wallace paints a substantially more chilling portrait of Lindbergh's pre-war activities than any previous historian and produces new evidence that the Nazis secretly plotted to install Lindbergh as the leader of the movement to keep America out of World War Two. The most controversial corporate investigation since IBM and the Holocaust, the book reveals that the Ford Motor Company's military and political complicity in the Third Reich war effort was considerably stronger than the company has acknowledged and that a US Army post-war investigation concluded that the company had become "an arsenal of Nazism." Wallace disputes a recent internal investigation into the use of slave labor at Ford's German plant during World War II - which company officials claimed as a vindication of its wartime activities - and reveals that corporate President Edsel Ford was about to be indicted by the US government for "Trading With the Enemy" at the time of his 1943 death. The American Axis is not only a mesmerizing, cautionary tale, but a compelling historical exposé.
