Book excerpt: The Secret War Council, Germany’s spy organization in New York, received orders from Berlin to stop the flow of munitions through terrorism in January 1915. German agents in the U.S. firebombed freighters on the high seas, incited labor unrest, fomented troubles along the Mexican-American border, and damaged or destroyed dozens of American factories and logistics installations. The German secret war against the United States in 1915, its discovery and publication, combined with the disastrous sinking of the Lusitania in May of that year, did much to prepare the American public to finally accept joining the Entente powers against Germany in 1917. This is the story of a group of German agents in the United States, who executed this mission.

Book excerpt: Winner of the Ray Allen Billington Prize and the Phillis Wheatley Book Award "An American 'Odyssey,' the larger-than-life story of a man who travels far in the wake of war and gets by on his adaptability and gift for gab." —Wall Street Journal A black child born on the US-Mexico border in the twilight of slavery, William Ellis inhabited a world divided along ambiguous racial lines. Adopting the name Guillermo Eliseo, he passed as Mexican, transcending racial lines to become fabulously wealthy as a Wall Street banker, diplomat, and owner of scores of mines and haciendas south of the border. In The Strange Career of William Ellis, prize-winning historian Karl Jacoby weaves an astonishing tale of cunning and scandal, offering fresh insights on the history of the Reconstruction era, the US-Mexico border, and the abiding riddle of race in America.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Massey-Gilbert Blue Book of Mexico: A Directory in English of the City of Mexico The Blue Book of Mexico, in its completed form, has four parts. Of these tthe first two, in addition to the customary incidental directory information, contain social and club features particularly of value to the Anglo-American colony of Mexico City, but of general interest as well to Americans and Englishmen at home, on whose account the matter is made somewhat extended and explanatory. English-Speaking Residents. The third part is the directory of English-speaking residents of the Federal District. The unusual demand for the Blue Book, and the sustained friendly interest it has excited in Mexico, render unnecessary further explanation of this feature. All the colony knows of the house-to-house canvass which secured these names, and of their verification by means of 5, 000 return postal cards. For the ready response to these cards, for the heavy advance subscription, and for the continued cordial comment of the press and the people, the publishers are warmly grateful. They endeavor to show their gratitude in the presentation of a book which shall exceed every promise. The Classified Directory. The classified business directory of all Mexico City business firms, which composes the fourth part, is the most important part of all. Its double index makes it serviceable equally to English-and Spanish-speaking residents of the Capital and the Republic, while its distinctly American method of classification will prove readily comprehensible to business men in the United States and England. This classified list was carefully compiled, under the direction of the representative of a prominent mercantile agency, from the official list of firms furnished by the Mexican Treasury Department, and was verified by return postal cards sent, with their particular classification, to each firm. The response to these cards was general, and practically every business man in the city is an advance subscriber. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of The Fingerprint Sourcebook originated during a meeting in April 2002. Individuals representing the fingerprint, academic, and scientific communities met in Chicago, Illinois, for a day and a half to discuss the state of fingerprint identification with a view toward the challenges raised by Daubert issues. The meeting was a joint project between the International Association for Identification (IAI) and West Virginia University (WVU). One recommendation that came out of that meeting was a suggestion to create a sourcebook for friction ridge examiners, that is, a single source of researched information regarding the subject. This sourcebook would provide educational, training, and research information for the international scientific community.

Download or read book Mexicanos written by Manuel G. Gonzales and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2009-08-20 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Newly revised and updated, Mexicanos tells the rich and vibrant story of Mexicans in the United States. Emerging from the ruins of Aztec civilization and from centuries of Spanish contact with indigenous people, Mexican culture followed the Spanish colonial frontier northward and put its distinctive mark on what became the southwestern United States. Shaped by their Indian and Spanish ancestors, deeply influenced by Catholicism, and tempered by an often difficult existence, Mexicans continue to play an important role in U.S. society, even as the dominant Anglo culture strives to assimilate them. Thorough and balanced, Mexicanos makes a valuable contribution to the understanding of the Mexican population of the United States—a growing minority who are a vital presence in 21st-century America.
