Book excerpt: Altered by the things she's seen and done, the same old Blastborn isn't the same anymore. Arabeth is home again, but never has she felt this alone. Sam and Melanie are in Vensay, and no one in Blastborn knows the truth about how their unique little city was started or the changes headed their way. In her frustration, she let slip that Blastborn citizens were unwitting captives, by order of their own government when the wrong reporter was listening. Soon after that, the protests started. She's got more than bad press to worry about. An elderly gentleman asks her to use her abilities with lyars to free people held inhumanly in buried prison and she agrees on the condition they be moved to the prison in Blastborn. When the prison turns out to be a stasis chamber and the criminals escape in an attempt to gather support and restart the war, you would think recapturing them is the hard part. Now her only hope is a strange, thin man in a mechanized suit of over-sized armour and electrical technology that makes her skin crawl. ---------- This is book three in the Arabeth Barnes series.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The act of martyrdom in the worldview of the Apocalypse has been considered to be an exemplification of non-violent resistance. Paul Middleton argues here, however, that it is in fact a representation of direct participation by Christians, through their martyrdom, in divine violence against those the author of Revelation portrays as God's enemies. Middleton shows that acceptance of martyrdom is to grasp the invitation to participate in the Revelation's divine violence. Martyrs follow the model laid down by the Lamb, who was not only slain, but resurrected, glorified, and who executes judgement. The world created by the Apocalypse encourages readers to conquer the Beast through martyrdom, but also through the experience of resurrection and being appointed judges. In this role, martyrs participate in the judgement of the wicked by sharing the Lamb's power to judge. Different from eschewing violence, the conceptual world of the Apocalypse portrays God, the Lamb, and the martyrs as possessing more power, might, and violent potential than the Emperor and his armies. Middleton believes that martyrdom and violence are necessary components of the worldview of Revelation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-deception occurs because we often see the world the way we would like it to be, rather than the way it is. Our brains so long for things the way we want them, we might not even be aware we are fooling ourselves, explains author Harry Triandis, a widely known Professor Emeritus of Psychology. Across cultures and around the world, self-deception is a phenomenon that has subtle and profound effects on everyday life, explains Triandis, also former president of the International Association of Cross-Cultural Psychology. In this work, he not only explains how and why self-deceptions occur in three areas - politics, religion, and terrorism - but also how to recognize and reduce the frequency of fooling ourselves. Insights here include consideration of personal and societal self-deceptions, as well as extensive understanding of how politics, ideologies, and religions can frame reality for each of us in such a way that it is, in our minds, warped so the stage is well-set for self-deception. This text will be of special interest to general readers drawn to politics and religion, as well as scholars of psychology, anthropology, and sociology.

Book excerpt: Christian churches today have misinterpreted Malachi 3:8–12 to mean that God wants each Christian to give 10 percent of his or her gross pay to the church on His behalf. The promise that God will "open the windows of heaven and pour out so much blessing that they will not have room to receive" has caused poor Christians to gave sacrificially as they hope for this windfall. This book is the result of a comprehensive study that reveals that God never asked for money for the tithes. God told us exactly what He wanted us to bring for the tithes, and it was not money. The book reveals why God would never have asked for money, and it could be very liberating to learn that you do not have to pay this 10 percent "church tax."

Book excerpt: "In The Martyr's Oath, Stewart Bell, Canada's most respected journalist covering terrorism, tells how Mohammed Mansour Jabarah, a teenaged Canadian, was selected by the Al Qaeda leadership to coordinate a powerful attack in Southeast Asia that would have led to more destruction than 9/11. There is no better way to understand how Western youth are being drawn to terrorism than to read this story of the rise of a new generation of terrorist." — Rohan Gunaratna, Author of Inside Al Qaeda: Global Network of Terror (Columbia University Press) "The Martyr's Oath provides a unique vignette into the recruitment, training and operational deployment of young Canadian Muslims by Al Qaeda terrorists. it couples a biographical account of their personal and family experiences, culminating in capture, interrogation, and death, with some extraordinarily detailed accounts of counter-terrorism operations across the Middle East, Southeast Asia and North America. This will be a must-read for anyone and everyone interested in the challenges of international terrorism in our times." — Dr. Martin Rudner, Director, Canadian Centre of Intelligence and Security Studies, The Norman Paterson School of International Affairs, Ottawa, ON Acclaim for Stewart Bell's first book, Cold Terror: How Canada Nurtures and Exports Terrorism Around the World "an arresting look at the reality of terrorism" —The Gazette (Montreal) Every responsible citizen of Canada, the US, the UK and other Western Countries should read this book." — Christopher Ondaatje, Times Higher Education Supplement "Cold Terror will shock the conscience of the nation... Book excerpt: The "noble people" was the name given the Aryans who lived south of the Medes and east of Elam. The Greeks called them PERSIANS. To lie, cheat or steal was forbidden among them. More than 2,500 YEARS AGO their great king prayed that his country be protected from war, famine and THE LIE. Wars and famine came and went, still the Persian place in history was maintained. Only THROUGH LIES is that HISTORY BEING IGNORED AND DESTROYED by the Islamic Republic. Persian Horses, Arabian Gulf (?), the TALES of the Persian Nights; all points of Persian Pride are in danger. Since lying for the sake of Islam has been justified, even praised as "clever," the Islamic Republic of Iran is being maintained by LIES. They want all things Persian to go away forever and be replaced by Arabian radicalism. DECEIVED is a story of change and regression, honor and deceit. It is the tale of a modern-day "noble Persian" who lived in Iran from the early 1900's until the Islamic Revolution in 1979, and the American patriot who befriended him. One was reared to be a sheik, ride horses, and lead caravans across the desert. The other was born in Tenessee, served in the Korean War and eliminated threats to American interests; without question. Fate intervened to change both their lives forever and lead to the beginning of the end for Persia. Although it is historical FICTION, some of the events were actual happenings told to the author by those who were there. Pat Hale has a Master's degree in Divinity from Vanderbilt University in Nashville and is, currently, working on a History Master's at American Public University online. Pat resides in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume makes a contribution to interpretation of this Gospel focusing attention on the Gospel itself as a series of conversations between the early Christian prophet and his immediate audience, the charismatic leaders and their followers in the churches of Judea and Jerusalem before the war with Rome, A.D. 66-70. The context of these conversations is one of great danger, often of martyrdom, which impelled the spirit-guided prophet to address to his charismatic colleagues these messages from the risen Lord. The book analyzes the central thrust of these messages, provoking fresh encounters between modern readers and the ancient author.
