Book excerpt: Lovable rogue and sleuth extraordinaire Sam Levitt is back in another beguiling, as-only-Peter-Mayle-can-write-it romp through the South of France. At the end of The Vintage Caper, Sam had just carried off a staggering feat of derring-do in the heart of Bordeaux, infiltrating the ranks of the French elite to rescue a stolen, priceless wine collection. With the questionable legality of the adventure—and the threat of some very powerful enemies!—Sam thought it’d be a while before he returned to France, especially with the charms of the beautiful Elena Morales to keep him in Los Angeles. But when the immensely wealthy Francis Reboul—the victim of Sam’s last heist but someone who knows talent when he sees it—asks our hero to take a job in Marseille, it’s impossible for Sam and Elena to resist the possibility of further excitement . . . to say nothing of the pleasures of the region. Soon the two are enjoying the coastal sunshine and the delectable food and wine for which Marseille is known. Yet as a competition over Marseille’s valuable waterfront grows more hotly disputed, Sam, representing Reboul, finds himself in the middle of an increasingly intrigue-ridden and dangerous real-estate grab, with thuggish gangsters on one side and sharklike developers on the other. Will Sam survive this caper unscathed? Will he live to enjoy another bowl of bouillabaisse? All will be revealed—with luck, savvy, and a lot of help from Sam’s friends—in the novel’s wonderfully satisfying climax.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The complete Hugo and Nebula Award–nominated cyberpunk trilogy by an author whose work is “wry and black and savage” (George R. R. Martin). Praised as “a perfect example of how exciting the subgenre can and should be,” George Alec Effinger’s Budayeen Cycle is a towering and timeless science fiction achievement that continues to amaze, shock, and captivate readers (SF Signal). When Gravity Fails: Set in a high-tech near future featuring an ascendant Muslim world and divided Western superpowers, this cult classic takes readers into a world with mind- or mood-altering drugs for any purpose, brains enhanced by electronic hardware, and surgically altered bodies. Street hustler Marîd Audran has always prided himself on his independence, free from commitments, connections, and even cybernetic modifications. But when a string of brutal murders lands him on the radar of Friedlander Bey, the most powerful and dangerous man in the decadent Arab ghetto, the Budayeen, Audran is forced to change his loner ways, or risk losing his life . . . A Fire in the Sun: Once a small-time smuggler, Marîd Audran has, to his chagrin, moved up in the ranks of the criminal underworld to become a lieutenant in Friedlander Bey’s shadowy empire. Tasked with being Bey’s eyes and ears inside local law enforcement, Audran finds himself tracking yet another serial killer through the streets of the Budayeen. And the closer he gets to his target, the more embroiled he becomes in the deadly political machinations hidden behind the city’s façade. The Exile Kiss: Marîd Audran is finally learning to appreciate the wealth and benefits that come from being on Friedlander Bey’s payroll when a powerful enemy does the unthinkable, and gets both Audran and Bey exiled from the Budayeen. Abandoned in the lifeless and lethal Arabian Desert, Audran and Bey have only one option: survive long enough to exact revenge on the man responsible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive history of crime and corruption in Cuba, The Cuban Connection challenges the common view that widespread poverty and geographic proximity to the United States were the prime reasons for soaring rates of drug trafficking, smuggling, gambling, and prostitution in the tumultuous decades preceding the Cuban revolution. Eduardo Saenz Rovner argues that Cuba's historically well-established integration into international migration, commerce, and transportation networks combined with political instability and rampant official corruption to help lay the foundation for the development of organized crime structures powerful enough to affect Cuba's domestic and foreign politics and its very identity as a nation. Saenz traces the routes taken around the world by traffickers and smugglers. After Cuba, the most important player in this story is the United States. The involvement of gangsters and corrupt U.S. officials and businessmen enabled prohibited substances to reach a strong market in the United States, from rum running during Prohibition to increased demand for narcotics during the Cold War. Originally published in Colombia in 2005, this first English-language edition has been revised and updated by the author.

Book excerpt: Other than a delicious root beer float and access to proper pizza, all Garth ‘Nickels’ N’Chalez wants is to see the creation of reality 2.0 happen. He already knows it's going to be bloody, rough and extremely trying, but when you sign up to be the Engineer of that new birth, you have very few choices regarding how it goes down. And when you've got the ancient, venerable and godlike Kith Antal leading an army of unstoppable Harmony soldiers coming at you with the express purposes of being the Victor.... You just can't help but feel it's gonna be even worse. But before Garth can even think about dealing with dear old dad, he's got to get inside Arcade City and deal with the so-called mad Goth king Blake. No one really knows what's under the gigantic clockwork dome that's lasted for thirty thousand years and Garth -not for a lack of trying to get proper Intel- finds himself doing what he does best. Which is basically charging in without thinking to see what happens next; forced to kill an innocent man in order to be sentenced to Arcade City for crimes against a King’s Son, Garth’s only information concerning the Domed, ancient city is that it is thirty thousand years old and filled to the brim with madness and chaos. The moment our hero steps through the Geared Doors leading into the fabled and storied Arcade City, Garth finds himself in –as usual- so far in over his head that his only choice is to push forward, ever forward. Inflicted with a terrible case of nanotech derived-Kingsblood poisoning, assaulted by fear, hunted by Gearmen, surrounded by hideously mutated gearheads and wardogs, saddled with an itinerant –and crankier than thou- blacksmith named Barnabas and balked at every turn, Garth begins the trek to Arcadia, wherein the Dark Iron King waits. Along the way, he and his reluctant companion seek to find a cure for Garth’s maladies, all while skirting dark resurgences of that thing the Engineer fears more than anything: Specter. Outside The Dome, the war for Trinity and It’s Armies does not go well; led by SpecSer Commander Aleksander Politoyov, his forces cannot get through the systemic shield created by Huey, and so he turns his attentions outwards. Employing the resourceful –and uncannily insightful- Tendreel Salingh to discover Garth N’Chalez’ true plans, Aleksander unwittingly sets into motion a series of events that will spiral wildly out of control. Herrig, now Chairman of the renamed Latelyspace Commonwealth, is assaulted on all sides. When Garth escaped the confines of Hospitalis aboard Bravo, the shield protecting Latelyspace from invasion dropped just long enough for him to escape, but also for a handful of Trinity’s forces to sneak in. His system is plagued by Heavy Elites, Specter Techs, and regular Army, and the original Horsemen are chomping at the bit to rain wrack and ruin upon everyone and everything that stands in their way. All this and more awaits. The Unreal Universe gears up for the end and everything is quite literally going to Hell in a hand basket. Will Garth survive Arcade City? Against the mighty Dark Iron King and his even mightier King’s Will … well. Garth will need to bring his ‘A’ Game… Won’t he just?

Book excerpt: Simon Kitson's Police and Politics in Marseille, 1936-1945 offers a ’history from below’ analysis of the attitude of the Marseille Police between the Popular Front and the Liberation of France. Kitson highlights the specificities of policing France’s largest port: clientelism, corruption, a floating population and high levels of criminality, including organised crime. But he also demonstrates why many of his conclusions about Police attitude can be generalised to other parts of France and, in so doing, challenges many of the assumptions of the existing historiography. Although they zealously hunted down Jews and communists, the Police were not as reliable for the Vichy government as is commonly assumed and were, undoubtedly, far more involved in Resistance than most sectors of society.

Martin). Set in a high-tech near future featuring an ascendant Muslim world and divided Western superpowers, this cult classic takes us into a world with mind- or mood-altering drugs for any purpose, brains enhanced by electronic hardware with plug-in memory additions and modules offering the wearer new personalities, and bodies shaped to perfection by surgery. Marid Audran, an unmodified and fairly honest street hustler, lives in a decadent Arab ghetto, the Budayeen, and holds on tight to his cherished independence. Then, against his best instincts, he becomes involved in a series of inexplicable murders. Some seem like routine assassinations, carried out with an old-fashioned handgun by a man wearing a plug-in James Bond persona; others, involving whores, feature prolonged torture and horrible mutilations. Soon the problem comes to the attention of Budayeen godfather Friedlander Bey—who makes Audran an offer he can’t refuse. Nominated for the Nebula and Hugo awards, the highest honors in the genre, When Gravity Fails, which introduced the cyberpunk Budayeen Cycle, is a pioneering work the Denver Post called “superior science fiction” and Harlan Ellison described as “crazy as a spider on ice skates . . . plain old terrific.”

Book excerpt: Heroin, Organized Crime, and the Making of Modern Turkey explores the history of organized crime in Turkey and the roles which gangs and gangsters have played in the making of the Turkish state and Turkish politics. Turkey's underworld, which has been at the heart of several devastating scandals over the last several decades, is strongly tied to the country's long history of opium production and heroin trafficking. As an industry at the centre of the Ottoman Empire's long transition into the modern Turkish Republic, as important as the silk road had been in earlier centuries, the modern rise of the opium and heroin trade helped to solidify and complicate long-standing relationships between state officials and criminal syndicates. Such relationships produced not only ongoing patterns of corruption, but helped fuel and enable repeated acts of state violence. Drawing upon new archival sources from the United States and Turkey, including declassified documents from the Prime Minister's Archives of the Republic of Turkey and the Central Intelligence Agency, Heroin, Organized Crime, and the Making of Modern Turkey provides a critical window into how a handful of criminal syndicates played supporting roles in the making of national security politics in the contemporary Turkey. The rise of the 'Turkish mafia', from its origins in the late Ottoman period to its role in the 'deep state' revealed by the so-called Susurluk and Ergenekon scandals, is a story that mirrors troubling elements in the republic's establishment and emphasizes the transnational and comparative significance of narcotics and gangs in the country's past.

Ari Moreau’s agreement to help her people nearly cost her everything. Her past is gone, stolen by the magical procedures of the Judiciary that rules her people. Her body is no longer her own, twisted into a poisonous sea creature unlike anything the world has ever seen. If not for a last-minute rescue by the Beast, nothing of her would remain. The Judiciary won’t let her go easily, however. Ari is their experiment and the key to all their plans. In the brewing war against the mermaids, the Judiciary will stop at nothing to turn her into their weapon. On the run and outnumbered, Ari and her allies must find a way to restore her memory and reverse what the Judiciary has done. With enemies closing in and time running out, the stakes couldn’t be higher, because if they fail, no one above the sea or below will be safe from the monster the Judiciary intends for Ari to become. Defiance Captured by the merciless Judiciary, Ari Moreau is a prisoner in her own body. She cannot move. Cannot speak. Immediate death awaits if she reveals that even a trace of her true identity still exists. Her only hope is that her family remains safe and that somehow the wizard resistance does too. But when she learns the Judiciary is pursuing a mysterious new target beneath the waves, her situation becomes even more dire. If the Judiciary finds what they seek, they will crush the wizard resistance and the mermaids alike—and they intend for Ari to lead them straight to their goal. To fight back could mean death. To remain hidden will mean the loss of everyone she loves. With the fate of the world at stake and no one to fight by her side, can Ari break free in time to save her family and her people from annihilation? Destiny After narrowly escaping death at the hands of the Judiciary, Ari found unexpected allies in the depths of the sea. With the mermaids and the Beast beside her, she chased her enemies through the ocean, only to discover a deadlier threat than she could have imagined waiting in the sunken ruins of a place that had been lost a thousand years before. And in one moment, everything changed. Now, the Beast is gone. The mermaid world is in tatters. Ancient magic has turned Ari’s worst enemy into a force unrivaled on land and sea, a monster more terrible than the Beast had ever been. Ari’s friends and family are in mortal danger, and Chloe and the mermaids are the only hope to save the wizards from total annihilation. In the war against the Judiciary, the mermaids and wizards must join together or else the entire world will fall.
