Millard. Among the books, all published between the end of the fifteenth and the middle of the nineteenth centuries, are numerous first or early editions. The almost one hundred titles catalogued in British Books trace the origins and development of architectural illustration in Britain. The collection is particularly rich in the eighteenth century, and includes almost all of the great folio albums recording the archaeological investigations of antiquity and most of the volumes documenting the architecture of Britain. These books, intended for the gentleman-amateur's library rather than the architect's office or builder's workshop, reveal the British sensitivity concerning properly architectural representation of buildings. Here, too, are practical treatises for construction, ornament patterns, surveys of monuments, views of buildings in situ, and topographical surveys. Drawing on travel books, guidebooks, and dozens of tourists' diaries and letters, it explores what it meant to tour country houses such as Blenheim Palace, Chatsworth, Wilton, Kedleston and Burghley in the tumultuous 1700s. It also questions the legacies of these early tourists: both as a critical cultural practice in the 18th century and an extraordinary and controversial influence in British culture today, country-house tourism is a phenomenon that demands investigation.

Elegantly and wittily he dissects the British connoisseurs whose expeditions, collections, and publications laid the groundwork for the Neoclassical revival and for the scholarly study of Graeco-Roman antiquity. After the foundation of the society in 1732, the Dilettani commissioned portraits of the members. Including a striking group of mock-classical and mock-religious representations, these portraits were painted by George Knapton, Sir Joshua Reynolds, and Sir Thomas Lawrence. During the second half of the century, the society’s expeditions to the Levant yielded a series of pioneering architectural folios, beginning with the first volume The Antiquities of Athens in 1762. These monumental volumes aspired to empirical exactitude in text and image alike. They prepared the way for Specimens of Antient Sculpture (1809), which combines the didactic (detailed investigations into technique, condition, restoration, and provenance) with the connoisseurial (plates that bring the illustration of ancient sculpture to new artistic heights). The Society of Dilettanti’s projects and publications exemplify the Enlightenment ideal of the gentleman amateur, which is linked in turn to a culture of wide-ranging curiosity.
