Book excerpt: Jon Wells, a baseball writer who has covered the Seattle Mariners for more than 15 years, asserts that poor management and shortsighted ownership combined to keep a team with three first-ballot Hall of Fame players, each in the prime of his career, from reaching the World Series. Wells details every misstep by the Mariners during the team's 35-year history. But wait, there's hope! Can General Manager Jack Zduriencik bring in enough young talent to make this club a contender again, as he did for the Milwaukee Brewers? Shipwrecked includes 45 color photos, most of which have not been published elsewhere.
Download or read book The Wedding written by Scott Burgess and published by TEACH Services, Inc.. This book was released on 2020-10-11 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scott Burgess's entirely new commentary on the book of Revelation inspires courage and faithfulness in the reader as it reveals, page after page, how the end-time judgment is the most joyous event in history: Jesus' marriage to His bride. Readers will treasure The Wedding: Jesus Stands for His Bride in the Book of Revelation for both its educational and devotional value. The author upholds the traditional Adventist methodology of allowing Scripture to interpret itself, and looking to history to confirm fulfilled prophecy. With that said, he also introduces a number of fresh insights. He highlights fascinating linguistic and conceptual connections with other portions of Scripture that many of us have not identified before. Those who pore over this tome will find a number of areas they readily agree with, and other areas that will require prayer and reflection before forming a decision, but nearly all will acknowledge Burgess' skillful manner of provoking prayerful thought and contemplation. What makes this book truly worthwhile is the presence of Christ. Burgess stresses the ubiquity of His manifestation throughout the book—as the One who stands seven times on behalf of His bride, empowering her to withstand the fiercest opposition for the sake of faithfulness to Him and His commandments. For those of us who are living in the judgment hour, Jesus offers us the enormous privilege of issuing the final wedding invitation to the world, sitting with Him upon His throne, and living with Him for eternity.

Book Synopsis The Jamestown Brides by : Jennifer Potter
Download or read book The Jamestown Brides written by Jennifer Potter and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2019 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In 1621, nearly fifteen years after the establishment of the Jamestown colony, the Virginia Company funded another voyage of colonists to the New World. This time, however, their ships carried fifty-six young women. Their ages ranged from sixteen to twenty-eight, they were of good character and proven skills, and each had a bride price of 150lbs of tobacco set by the Company. Though the women had all agreed to journey to Jamestown of their own free will, they were also unquestionably there to be sold into marriage, thereby generating a profit for investors and increasing the colony's long-term viability. These were the aims of the Virginia Company at least; the aims of the women themselves are less clear. Without letters or journals (young women from middling classes had not generally been taught to write), Jennifer Potter's research has turned to the Virginia Company's merchant lists, which were used as a kind of sales catalog for prospective husbands, as well as censuses, court records, the minutes of Virginia's General Assemblies, letters to England from their male counterparts, and other such accounts of the everyday life of the early colonists. The first part of her book explores the women's lives before their departure, but the true heft of the work lies in the second part, which documents the women's lives in Jamestown. In telling the story of these "Maids for Virginia," Potter at once sheds light on life for women in early modern England and in the New World."--Provided by poublsher.
