An essential book for administrators, staff, and faculty at Catholic institutions of higher learning.

Book excerpt: In this short biography, Father Stefanelli highlights key moments in the life of William Joseph Chaminade. The reader enjoys glimpses along his faith-filled (and at times rocky) path as the Marianist Founder traveled from his life as a young child in Mussidan, France; his exile in Saragossa, Spain; to his beatification 150 years after his death. Chaminade's inspired mission to rechristianize France is as viable today as it was at his first Sodality meeting on December 8th, 1800.

Book excerpt: In True Stories: Memories, Musings, Odds and Ends, C.J. Ott tells of the first seven years of his childhood in New York City and the next seven years in the Saugerties area, a hundred miles north of the city. He recounts his experiences as a postulant, novice and scholastic in the Marianist religious order; four years of military service in the U.S. Air Force, and a twenty-five year career as a teacher and principal in Trotwood-Madison City Schools, by Dayton, Ohio. Along the way he recalls the Great Depression, World War II, the Korean and Viet Nam Wars, and the tumultuous '60s. The author is a lifelong student and, by his own admission, addicted to reading. The musings cover a broad range of topics from philosophy, economics, politics and religion, to the good life, the golden years, and death and dying. True Stories looks back over more than seventy-five years of living. It was written for family, friends and progeny, but others will find it a pleasure to read.

Book excerpt: Heresy in the Heartland is a narrative case study of the 'Heresy' Affair at the University of Dayton, a series of events predominantly in the philosophy department that occurred when tensions between the Thomists and proponents of new philosophies reached crisis stage in fall 1966. The controversy culminated in a letter written by a lay assistant professor to the Cincinnati archbishop, Karl J. Alter. In the letter, the professor cited a number of instances where “erroneous teachings” were “endorsed” or “openly advocated” by four lay faculty members. Concerned about the pastoral impact on the University of Dayton community, the professor asked the archbishop to conduct an investigation. How the University weathered this controversy, the second of three major controversies to hit Catholic higher education within three years (St. John’s University, University of Dayton and the Curran affair at Catholic University of America), is of interest to faculty and administrators in Catholic higher education who continue to struggle with defining what it means to be a “Catholic” university, with the relationship of Catholic universities to the Church at large and the hierarchy in particular, and with Church teachings that conflict with the culture we live in such as immigration, the environment and sexual ethics. The story is told in chronological order by the participants in the controversy - faculty, administrators, students and clergy - using the words of those involved. Heresy in the Heartland concludes with a synopsis of what happened at the University of Dayton and draws some lessons for the future of Catholic higher education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offers illuminating essays by passionate and well-recognized American Catholic intellectuals on the interaction between faith and work. By envisioning Catholicism as a cultural force that shapes morality, the arts, creativity, cultural conversation, social justice, spirituality and vocation, the authors invite educational leaders and intellectuals to take seriously their holy work -- of teaching others how to understand and engage the world from a Catholic perspective. Stemming from nearly a decade of conferences sponsored by Collegium, a consortium of sixty Catholic colleges and universities, this book offers new ways of connecting the content and concerns of Catholic faith to intellectual life across academic disciplines. This book helps form a community of inquiry around the issues central to Catholic intellectual enterprise.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking book explores the inherent interconnectedness of sustainability and spirituality, acknowledging the dependency of one upon the other. John E. Carroll contends that true ecological sustainability, in contrast to the cosmetic attempts at sustainability we see around us, questions our society's fundamental values and is so countercultural that it is resisted by anyone without a spiritual belief in something deeper than efficiency, technology, or economics. Carroll draws on the work of cultural historian and "geologian" Thomas Berry, whose eco-spiritual thought underlies many of the sustainability efforts of communities described in this book, including particular branches of Catholic religious orders and the loosely organized Sisters of the Earth. The writings of Native Americans on spirituality and ecology are also highlighted. These models for sustainability not only represent the tangible link between ecology and spirituality, but also, more importantly, a vision of what could be.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While building a strong program in Critical Care on foundations of excellence and compassion, Dr. Wood used two methods of inquiry and knowing: Science looked outward with objective, accurate, reproducible measurements to falsify erroneous explanations. Belief looked inward for purpose and meaning, analyzing personal subjective issues, like God, which cannot be falsified for lack of a Godometer. But when verified by the still small voice or intuition, belief creates a spiritual source of knowing akin to the scientific method. Recent books like War of the Worldviews assume science and spirituality are antagonistic; debating which is better is like bringing a knife to a gunfight, for both sides are vulnerable to critique. Science, Belief, Intuition shows how the strengths of one fill the gaps of the other, providing more comprehensive understanding together than either alone.
