Book excerpt: The Tasman Map is an icon of early Dutch cartography and shows the first European discoveries of Australia. Based on sixteen separate discoveries, the first map of Australia took shape over a period of only forty years, from 1606 to 1644. It shows a recognisable outline of the north, west, and south coasts of Australia that was not to change for another 125 years until the arrival of the British explorer James Cook. The version of the map held by the Mitchell Library in Sydney, Australia, is hand-drawn on delicate Japanese paper and is thought to have been specially prepared for presentation to the Amsterdam Chamber of the Dutch East India Company. Every visitor who passes through the vestibule of the Mitchell Library stops to admire the magnificent marble mosaic of the Tasman Map, which fills the entire vestibule floor and shows Abel Tasman's voyages of exploration around Australia in 1642/43 and 1644.

Book Synopsis A Draught of the South Land by : Paul Moon
Download or read book A Draught of the South Land written by Paul Moon and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2024-01-01 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of how the map of New Zealand emerged is a fascinating one. The first full map of the islands was published in London in 1773, which might seem the natural starting point, but over the preceding 150 years, fragments of charts and intelligence about New Zealand ricocheted around various parts of the world. In A Draught of the South Land, Paul Moon provides the first comprehensive account of this piecemeal process. Moon’s investigation covers several continents over more than a century, and reveals the personalities, blunders, strategic miscalculations, scientific brilliance, and imperial power-plays that were involved. Above all, he examines the roles played by explorers and traders, Māori and European rulers, scientific societies and military groups, as well as specialist cartographers and publishers. At a time when maps as colonial tools, enablers of trade and objects of curiosity are being studied anew, his careful analysis and engaging narrative will be of interest to scholars everywhere.

Download or read book Sea People written by Christina Thompson and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2019-03-12 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A blend of Jared Diamond’s Guns, Germs, and Steel and Simon Winchester’s Pacific, a thrilling intellectual detective story that looks deep into the past to uncover who first settled the islands of the remote Pacific, where they came from, how they got there, and how we know. For more than a millennium, Polynesians have occupied the remotest islands in the Pacific Ocean, a vast triangle stretching from Hawaii to New Zealand to Easter Island. Until the arrival of European explorers they were the only people to have ever lived there. Both the most closely related and the most widely dispersed people in the world before the era of mass migration, Polynesians can trace their roots to a group of epic voyagers who ventured out into the unknown in one of the greatest adventures in human history. How did the earliest Polynesians find and colonize these far-flung islands? How did a people without writing or metal tools conquer the largest ocean in the world? This conundrum, which came to be known as the Problem of Polynesian Origins, emerged in the eighteenth century as one of the great geographical mysteries of mankind. For Christina Thompson, this mystery is personal: her Maori husband and their sons descend directly from these ancient navigators. In Sea People, Thompson explores the fascinating story of these ancestors, as well as those of the many sailors, linguists, archaeologists, folklorists, biologists, and geographers who have puzzled over this history for three hundred years. A masterful mix of history, geography, anthropology, and the science of navigation, Sea People combines the thrill of exploration with the drama of discovery in a vivid tour of one of the most captivating regions in the world. Sea People includes an 8-page photo insert, illustrations throughout, and 2 endpaper maps.
Book Synopsis The Tasman Map: the Biography of a Map by : Ian Burnet
Download or read book The Tasman Map: the Biography of a Map written by Ian Burnet and published by Rosenberg Publishing. This book was released on 2019-11 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is the Tasman Map important? This story of the first Dutch voyages to discover Australia is set against the background of the struggle of the newly formed Dutch Republic to gain its independence from the Kingdom of Spain and the struggle of the Dutch East India Company for trade supremacy in the East Indies against its Portuguese, Spanish, and English rivals. Over a period of only forty years (from 1606 to 1644) and based on sixteen separate discoveries, the first map of Australia took shape. The Tasman Map shows a recognizable outline of the north, west, and south coasts of Australia that was not to change for another 125 years, until the British explorer James Cook charted the east coast in 1770. It was in 1925 and 1933 that the Mitchell Library in Sydney, Australia acquired both the Tasman Huydecoper Journal and the Tasman Bonaparte Map. The story of how the library managed to acquire these treasures of Dutch exploration and cartography will bring new recognition to these icons of both Dutch and Australian history.
