Book excerpt: The 1814 Campaign in France saw Napoleon desperately struggling for survival as the Allies closed in following his defeat at the Battle of the Nations in 1813. Many historians avow that Napoleon's fight to retain his throne and his Empire during the early months of 1814 remain his greatest hour, despite ultimate failure. Along with Napoleon on his lightning campaign were his staff, including Baron Fain, who was Napoleon’s secretary. Napoleon would often dictate to his secretaries his musings, correspondence and insights, always at extreme speed and sometimes into the small hours of the night: in short they were privy to his innermost thoughts. After Napoleon’s final fall, Fain was given the task of preparing a book to record his experiences and the French point of view of the Campaign. His eyewitness account is an interesting narrative on the battles and military and political events leading to the Emperor's defeat and abdication in 1814. Author — Baron Fain, Agathon-Jean-François, 1778-1837. Translator — Anon Text taken, whole and complete, from the edition published in London, H. Colburn and co., 1823. Book excerpt: This study examines how debates about history during the French Revolution informed and changed the nature of the British novel between 1790 and 1814. During these years, intersections between history, political ideology, and fiction, as well as the various meanings of the term "history" itself, were multiple and far reaching. Morgan Rooney elucidates these subtleties clearly and convincingly. While political writers of the 1790s--Burke, Price, Mackintosh, Paine, Godwin, Wollstonecraft, and others--debate the historical meaning of the Glorious Revolution as a prelude to broader ideological arguments about the significance of the past for the present and future, novelists engage with this discourse by representing moments of the past or otherwise vying to enlist the authority of history to further a reformist or loyalist agenda. Anti-Jacobin novelists such as Charles Walker, Robert Bisset, and Jane West draw on Burkean historical discourse to characterize the reform movement as ignorant of the complex operations of historical accretion. For their part, reform-minded novelists such as Charlotte Smith, William Godwin, and Maria Edgeworth travesty Burke's tropes and arguments so as to undermine and then redefine the category of history. As the Revolution crisis recedes, new novel forms such as Edgeworth's regional novel, Lady Morgan's national tale, and Jane Porter's early historical fiction emerge, but historical representation--largely the legacy of the 1790s' novel--remains an increasingly pronounced feature of the genre. Whereas the representation of history in the novel, Rooney argues, is initially used strategically by novelists involved in the Revolution debate, it is appropriated in the early nineteenth century by authors such as Edgeworth, Morgan, and Porter for other, often related ideological purposes before ultimately developing into a stable, nonpartisan, aestheticized feature of the form as practiced by Walter Scott. The French Revolution Debate and the British Novel, 1790-1814 demonstrates that the transformation of the novel at this fascinating juncture of British political and literary history contributes to the emergence of the historical novel as it was first realized in Scott's Waverley (1814).

Book excerpt: Was it inevitable that France should become a republic? In this fascinating account of the period 1814-48, Munro Price attempts to answer this most difficult of questions. Using substantial unpublished research as he did in his celebrated The Fall of the French Monarchy, Price focuses on the amazing political machinations of Madame Adelaide, sister of King Louis Philippe. Though only mentioned rarely in other histories of the time, The French Revolutions shows how her intelligence and behind the scenes wrangling secured her brother the throne, thereby creating France's only long lasting experiment with a constitutional monarchy. Munro Price vividly brings the period alive with all its instability and political intrigue, while at the same time illuminating our understanding of a difficult and tumultuous time. The French Revolutions is an ambitious, exciting and masterful work of history that is sure to delight and inform for many years to come.

This book was released on 2010-03 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a rare document of unusual historical interest. It is an account of the events leading up to Napoleon's first abdication at the Palace of Fontainebleau near Paris in 1814. The account was written at the fallen Emperor's express command by Baron Fain, his Cabinet secretary. The book contains a facsimile of Napoleon's own handwriting in his (unreadable) instrument of abdication. The first part of the book chronicles Napoleon's movements and manoeuvres between November 1813 and January 1814 as he strove to avoid abdicating and drive wedges between the countries of the coalition which had overwhelmed him - Britain, Prussia, Russia, Austria and Sweden. The second, larger, portion of the narrative contains a journal of Napoleon's only campaign fought on French soil - the 1814 'campaign of France' - rated by many as his most brilliant when sometimes fighting an engagement every two days, he desperately fought off the advancing Prussians under Marshal Blucher for two months. Finally, the third part of the book, describes the scene of the abdication at Fontainebleau, and an appendix lists the terms of Napoleon's surrender, which saw him exiled to a 'mini-kingdom' on the island of Elba - an exile which would detain him for just eleven months until his final hurrah in the 100 days ending at Waterloo.
