Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Manufacture of Leather The manufacture of leather is now a chemical industry, and in this volume it has been the author's aim to treat it as such. The book is written for the general student of this branch of chemical technology, and an attempt has therefore been made on the one hand to keep the phraseology from being too scientific, in order that it may be intelligible to the intelligent workman, and on the other hand to keep it from being too technical in order that it may be of use to the pure chemist who wishes to apply his knowledge in the leather industry. On the technical side the author has endeavoured in his descriptions of practical methods to give prominence to those processes which are at present most widely used, but as the details of these processes vary so very much in different parts of the country and change so rapidly under the march of modern progress, it has been considered useless to enter into a minute description of them. At the most they may be taken as to some extent typical of what is employed in this country, and in no case is it claimed that the methods described will pro duce the best possible results. This is particularly true with regard to the finishing processes that are given. The reader who scans the later chapters of this book in the hope of dis covering new and wonderful recipes for seasons, finishes, etc., will search in vain. For the most part the recipes mentioned in the text are old and well known, and have been selected by the author merely from the standpoint of what was typical. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Leather Manufacture In the eighteen years which have elapsed since the publication of the first edition, not only have great advances been made in the chemical knowledge on which the manufacture is based, but new points of view have been gained, involving an acquaintance with physical and colloidal chemistry which is not yet universal among leather-trade chemists, and I have felt compelled to enter into elementary details of these branches of science which, no doubt, in a few years will be among the commonplaces of chemical knowledge. I must therefore repeat the apology of the first preface, that to some of my readers much will necessarily seem too elementary, while to others it may prove too difficult, though I have endeavoured, as much as possible, to confine mathematical treatment to notes and appendices. It may be pointed out, however, that the advance of the future will necessarily tend to exact and mathematical methods, and that many theories which seem plausible enough when stated qualitatively and in general terms will break down when submitted to the rigorous examination of mathematics. The third volume on the Methods of Leather Manufacture, which was suggested in the former preface, yet remains to be written, but advancing age renders such a work impossible to the present writer, and its execution must be left to some of the young and well-trained chemists who are now devoting themselves to the trade. It is my pleasant duty to acknowledge much indebtedness to Mr F. C. Thompson, my Assistant in the Procter International Research Laboratory, not only for re-writing the chapters on the Chemistry of Hide and on that of the Tannins, with which he has made himself specially familiar, but for much general assistance both in the preparation of the work and in the reading of proofs; to Mr W. R. Atkin for his permission to insert the paper on hydrion measurement which appears in Appendix D, and also for help in proof-reading; and to the various gentlemen who have given information and allowed me to use their blocks and drawings in illustration; and especially to Mr A. Seymour-Jones, Professor McCandlish, Mr J. T. Wood, and Mr M. C. Lamb. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manufacture of Leather: Manufacture of Leather, Parts 1-3 1. Definition and Classification. -The term leather is applied to the product obtained by the treatment of hides or skins of animals with certain reagents that convert the animal tissues into a tough, opaque, pliable, and fibrous substance which is not subject to putrefaction. 2. The pelts of animals come to the tanner in four conditions: green or market (fresh from the animal); green salted (when salt has been rubbed on the flesh and the skins placed in piles to cure); dry salted (same as green salted but afterwards allowed to dry); flint, or dry, hides (usually stretched and allowed to dry in the sun). According to their size, these pelts are divided into three general classes, namely, hides, kips, and skins. Hides comprise the coverings of larger animals such as the cow, horse, camel, and walrus. These are used for heavy leather manufacture such as shoe soles, machinery belting, harness, and other purposes where stiffness and strength are required. They are also often split for the purpose of producing shoe leather, bag, case, strap, automobile, and furniture leather. Kips are the undersized animals of the same species. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Leather Manufacture in the United States: A Dissertation on the Methods and Economics of Tanning The proprietor of the Shoe and Leather Reporter proposes to meet a very general demand for information in regard to the manufacture of bark tanned leather by grouping together in permanent form a series of articles on the subject, written for the paper by Mr. Jackson S. Schultz. To make the work acceptable to the tanners, not only of America but of foreign countries, it will be appropriately illustrated, presenting in outline, and in some instances in working drawings, the principal mechanical inventions employed in the business, so that the machines may be duplicated and the methods of their use easily comprehended. It was found inconvenient to illustrate the work during its publication in serial numbers, but now that it is to appear in book form that feature will be supplied, and will add to its appearance and usefulness. If the undertaking should be adequately encouraged by the tanners and finishers of bark leather, it will be followed at an early day by essays treating of "Sumac Tanning," and such other departments of leather and its fabrics as may be deemed worthy of consideration. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hides Skins and the Manufacture of Leather: A Layman's View of the Industry The remarkable feature of the industry, even now, remains the fact that it rests primarily on an empirical basis, far more so than any other of our primary industries. While it is probably true that medi cinal herbs constituted the first chemical discovery of man, it may well be claimed that industrial chemistry, to which our present civilization owes so many of its material adjuncts, originated in the preservation of animal Skins. Besides the usage of leather for boot soles and uppers, there are an infinite number of purposes to which it has been adapted, some of which it will be impossible to treat here in even a cursory manner. It is not intended by these omissions in any way to belittle the im portance Of the subjects which the author has felt to lie beyond the scope of this pamphlet. Furthermore, in order to avoid duplication, the arbitrary expedient has been adopted of discussing in Part Two only the vegetable tannage of sole leather, and in Part Three only the chrome process for making upper boot leather. In this manner each method of tanning is taken up in detail in the field where it finds its greatest application, but it must not be inferred by the lay reader that sole leather is never chromed, or that no upper leather is made by the vegetable processes. While this fact is brought out later on, it cannot be too strongly emphasized at the outset. To attempt a discussion of the entire industry within SO brief a space is at best a precarious undertaking. For purposes of simplification the subject has been divided into four groups: 1. The Raw Material; that is, hides and skins, what they are, where they come from, how they are Obtained, and their imperfections; also the materials by means of which they are made into leather. 2. The Manufacture of Sole and other Heavy Leather. 3. The Manufacture of Boot Upper, Glove, Book, and other Light Leather. 4. The Economic Distribution of the Industry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Manufacture of Leather: Being a Description of All of the Processes for the Tanning and Tawing With Bark, Extracts, Chrome and All Modern Tannages in General Use We are ever traveling onward, and while it may by some be considered that the duty of I 5 per cent. On hides and calf-skins might be an impediment, it can readily be overcome by our superior machinery and skill, and thus will we be able still to hold our foreign trade. While this industry has progressed from the simplest and most primitive to its present state, it is not yet perfect. The author would therefore admonish every manufacturer of leather to be on the lookout for all new improvements, and when found to be practicable to adopt them, as only in this way can he keep up-to-date, and thus be saved from being relegated to the rear. It is much easier to go backward than to go forward. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Leather Manufacture: A Practical Handbook of Tanning, Currying, and Chrome Leather Dressing Respecting the early history of tanning, some very interesting facts are given in the Gerber Courier of Vienna, from which we extract the following The oldest method of tanning is red or bark tanning, or that in which, in addition to the wooden and iron scraping and rubbing instrument used in the preparation or improve ment of the hide or skin, limewater and astringent extracts from oak and other kinds of bark, or from other vegetable substances, are employed. It is called red tanning because the tanning substances always contain more or less colouring matter, which dye the leather through and through of a more or less reddish colour. The ancient Orientals understood the art of preparing not only common leather, but even good and often finely coloured varieties, similar to our Morocco and Cordovan. Persian and Babylonian leather has been celebrated time out of mind. Many centuries back such leather was brought from Asia into Europe - first into Turkey, Prussia, and Hungary, and thence, later, into Germany, Holland, England, France, Spain, &c., and these countries subse quently learned to manufacture leather themselves. In the first centuries of Christianity, the Turks, Russians, and Hungarians were the most celebrated tanners; subse quently England, the Netherlands, and Spain endeavoured to equal them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Technologic Papers of the Bureau of Standards, Vol. 153: Area Measurement of Leather The literature of this subject is very meager. The best mate rial available up to the time of the investigation by the Bureau is to be found in The Manufacture of Leather, by Davis.1 The first edition of this book devotes a chapter of 1 2 pages to the subject of leather-measuring machines, including 13 figures and a list of United States patents issued in the interval 1 790 - 1883, inclusive. The material of this chapter is almost entirely descriptive, cover ing both obsolete and existing types of leather-measuring machines. No information is given as to the performance possibilities or comparative Operating accuracies of the different types. In the 1897 edition of-the above-named work the space devoted to leather - measuring machines is reduced to four and one-half pages by the elimination of a considerable amount of material descriptive of obsolete or undeveloped types of leather-measuring machines. In this edition, only two illustrations are given, one of a typical wheel machine and one of a pin machine. On account of the scarcity of satisfactory illustrations of leather-measuring machines, both of these are reproduced in the present 'paper. Like the chapter in the earlier edition, the later treatment by Davis gives no information beyond descriptions of the machines and the manufacturers' claims for them. No adequate data of the sort required by the designer nor any indication of the sources and types of error to be expected are given. We do, however, repair the vast majority of imperfections successfully; any imperfections that remain are intentionally left to preserve the state of such historical works.
