Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the third component in the ROAL model; it suggests a relation between language and mathematical models of totality relying on verifiability and observability/objectivity models of the linguistic text. In addition of the biomathematical hypothesis, rules of observability and objectivity have been extended to both objective and non-objective models toward a manifolded dimension of the structure within a field dimension of consciousness in which dwells the paradigm of the text as a meta-observability domain for language and natural/individual languages.

Book Synopsis An Introduction to Manifolds by : Loring W. Tu
Download or read book An Introduction to Manifolds written by Loring W. Tu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-10-05 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manifolds, the higher-dimensional analogs of smooth curves and surfaces, are fundamental objects in modern mathematics. Combining aspects of algebra, topology, and analysis, manifolds have also been applied to classical mechanics, general relativity, and quantum field theory. In this streamlined introduction to the subject, the theory of manifolds is presented with the aim of helping the reader achieve a rapid mastery of the essential topics. By the end of the book the reader should be able to compute, at least for simple spaces, one of the most basic topological invariants of a manifold, its de Rham cohomology. Along the way, the reader acquires the knowledge and skills necessary for further study of geometry and topology. The requisite point-set topology is included in an appendix of twenty pages; other appendices review facts from real analysis and linear algebra. Hints and solutions are provided to many of the exercises and problems. This work may be used as the text for a one-semester graduate or advanced undergraduate course, as well as by students engaged in self-study. Requiring only minimal undergraduate prerequisites, 'Introduction to Manifolds' is also an excellent foundation for Springer's GTM 82, 'Differential Forms in Algebraic Topology'.

Download or read book Theory of Language written by Karl Bühler and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2011-04-27 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Karl Bühler (1879–1963) was one of the leading theoreticians of language of the twentieth century. Although primarily a psychologist, Bühler devoted much of his attention to the study of language and language theory. His masterwork Sprachtheorie (1934) quickly gained recognition in the fields of linguistics, semiotics, the philosophy of language and the psychology of language. This new edition of the English translation of Bühler’s theory begins with a survey on ‘Bühler’s legacy’ for modern linguistics (Werner Abraham), followed by the Theory of Language, and finally with a special ‘Postscript: Twenty-five Years Later ...’ (Achim Eschbach). Bühler’s theory is divided into four parts. Part I discusses the four axioms or principles of language research, the most famous of which is the first, the organon model, the base of Bühler's instrumental view of language. Part II treats the role of indexicality in language and discusses deixis as one determinant of speech. Part III examines the symbolic field, dealing with context, onomatopoeia and the function of case. Part IV deals with the elements of language and their organization (syllabification, the definition of the word, metaphor, anaphora, etc). The text is accompanied by an Introduction (Achim Eschbach); Translator's preface (Donald Fraser Goodwin); Glossary of terms; and a Bibliography of cited works.
Book Synopsis On the Subject of English by : Henry Widdowson
Download or read book On the Subject of English written by Henry Widdowson and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2019-11-18 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The globalized use of language calls into question conventional ways of thinking in linguistics, applied linguistics and language pedagogy. This book critically examines this thinking from an historical, at times satirical, perspective and proposes an alternative conceptualization. The first section defines a number of key concepts about communication which are taken up in subsequent sections and shown to be relevant to the different but related areas of language study. Issues about the relationship between linguistics and applied linguistics set the scene for a discussion of the nature of discourse, and then how this bears on the understanding of the globalised use of English as a lingua franca. The final section considers the implications of this perspective on communication for how the subject of English language teaching might be redefined. The book is relevant for anyone who sees the need for a critical consideration of established concepts in linguistics and language pedagogy.
Book Synopsis Logic and Philosophy of Mathematics in the Early Husserl by : Stefania Centrone
Download or read book Logic and Philosophy of Mathematics in the Early Husserl written by Stefania Centrone and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-12-01 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Logic and Philosophy of Mathematics in the Early Husserl focuses on the first ten years of Edmund Husserl’s work, from the publication of his Philosophy of Arithmetic (1891) to that of his Logical Investigations (1900/01), and aims to precisely locate his early work in the fields of logic, philosophy of logic and philosophy of mathematics. Unlike most phenomenologists, the author refrains from reading Husserl’s early work as a more or less immature sketch of claims consolidated only in his later phenomenology, and unlike the majority of historians of logic she emphasizes the systematic strength and the originality of Husserl’s logico-mathematical work. The book attempts to reconstruct the discussion between Husserl and those philosophers and mathematicians who contributed to new developments in logic, such as Leibniz, Bolzano, the logical algebraists (especially Boole and Schröder), Frege, and Hilbert and his school. It presents both a comprehensive critical examination of some of the major works produced by Husserl and his antagonists in the last decade of the 19th century and a formal reconstruction of many texts from Husserl’s Nachlaß that have not yet been the object of systematical scrutiny. This volume will be of particular interest to researchers working in the history, and in the philosophy, of logic and mathematics, and more generally, to analytical philosophers and phenomenologists with a background in standard logic.

To what extent are the philosophies and worldviews developed in North and Latin America diverse? These and other questions prompted by the recent upsurge of relativism are tackled in original essays by philosophers and social scientists from North and Latin America.

Book Synopsis Realism, Rationalism and Scientific Method: Volume 1 by : Paul K. Feyerabend
Download or read book Realism, Rationalism and Scientific Method: Volume 1 written by Paul K. Feyerabend and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1981 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past thirty years Paul Feyerabend has developed an extremely distinctive and influentical approach to problems in the philosophy of science. The most important and seminal of his published essays are collected here in two volumes, with new introductions to provide an overview and historical perspective on the discussions of each part. Volume 1 presents papers on the interpretation of scientific theories, together with papers applying the views developed to particular problems in philosophy and physics. The essays in volume 2 examine the origin and history of an abstract rationalism, as well as its consequences for the philosophy of science and methods of scientific research. Professor Feyerabend argues with great force and imagination for a comprehensive and opportunistic pluralism. In doing so he draws on extensive knowledge of scientific history and practice, and he is alert always to the wider philosophical, practical and political implications of conflicting views. These two volumes fully display the variety of his ideas, and confirm the originality and significance of his work.
Book Synopsis Words in the World: The Bakhtin Circle by : David Schalkwyk
Download or read book Words in the World: The Bakhtin Circle written by David Schalkwyk and published by Skenè. Texts and Studies. This book was released on 2016-01-11 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the ways in which members the Bakhtin School (Michail Bakhtin, Valentin Voloshinov, and Pavel Medvedev) conceive of the relationship between language and literary fiction and the “world beyond language”. Beginning with the Russian Formalist definition of the literary as that which defamiliarizes our familiar perception of the world, it uses Jacques Derrida’s deconstruction of phenomenological perception and Ludwig Wittgenstein’s analysis of aspect perception to illuminate the Bakhtin School’s arguments that the world and language make contact through shared or contested evaluative intonation in the situated context of the utterance rather than the abstract, purely linguistic notion of the sentence. Saussurean linguistics and Russian Formalism, which treat language as the product of a disembodied system or as mere material, have excluded this aspect from their purview. The Bakhtin Circle’s trans- or metalinguistics seeks to restore our perception of the embodiment of language in the world of human social being: it seeks to show the way in which even fictional utterances are intonationally “intertwined by a thousand threads into the non-verbal real-life context”, and are dialogically related to other utterances as a matter of their internal constitution rather than by mere empirical contingency.
Download or read book Feminist Amnesia written by Jean Curthoys and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-05-20 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Feminist Amnesia is an important challenge to contemporary academic feminism. Jean Curthoys argues that the intellectual decline of university arts education and the loss of a deep moral commitment in feminism are related phenomena. The contradiction set up by the radical ideas of the 1960s, and institutionalised life of many of its protagonists in the academy has produced a special kind of intellectual distortion. This book criticises current trends in feminist theory from the perspective of forgotten and allegedly outdated feminist ideas. Jean Curthroys show that much contemporary feminist theory, like much of today's radical thought, is muddled. The 'forgotten' theory of Women's Liberation was, she argues, deeply oppositional and moral. The repression of this theory has led to distortions, most notabley in the preoccupation with binary oppositions. Jean Curthoys argues that where Women's Liberation was once radical, much of contemporary feminist thought hides behind obscurantism, and has become conservative and orthodox. These controversial ideas will be keenly debated by all those involved in womens's studies, feminist theory and moral philosophy.
