Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on East Germany’s capacity to innovate and diffuse technology, this book sheds light on the technological gap that has developed between the two Germanies. Dr. Bentley compares the sophistication of GDR and FRG technology in different industrial branches, evaluates the strengths and weaknesses of the GDR’s research and development system, compares the R&D effort of the two Germanies, and discusses the government policies that affected technological change in GDR industry from 1945 to 1975. He identifies and analyzes hindrances to research, innovation, and diffusion in the fields of planning, organization, economic stimulation, and ideology, and looks at the formation of interest groups. He also compares evidence from the GDR with data from other countries, including the USSR.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Counting on Computers: New Information Technologies and Curricular Change in East Germany, 1960s to 1990 is a compelling exploration of socialist ambitions for a computerised future and how computer technology was imagined to reshape education and socialist society in the German Democratic Republic (GDR). It delves into the positive visions of a computerised future embraced by the country's one-party leadership, and examines how these visions influenced educational policy and curricula as computers were introduced into workplaces and schools. The book provides readers with a comprehensive perspective on the historical development of computer education in the GDR, highlighting the crucial links between the integration of computers in different sectors of the educational system, as well as in society and the socialist economy at large. By uncovering this lesser-known aspect of East German history, the book sheds light on the intricate and multifaceted relationship between technology, ideology, and education.

Book excerpt: The transition process of the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, which started more than a decade ago, has been the focus of much attention for both practitioners and scholars. Few studies however, address management issues involved in the transition process and no study has, until now, assessed the strategies and tactics which individual companies have pursued over the past decade as part of their adaptation process. This book fills this gap and will leave the reader with a better understanding of the adaptation process at single firm level.

Book Synopsis A Reversal of Fortunes? by : Rachel Alsop
Download or read book A Reversal of Fortunes? written by Rachel Alsop and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2000 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: German unification brought fundamental, often traumatic changes for the people in eastern Germany. Women as a group were arguably more deeply affected by the changes than any other, and in one area in particular: that of work, which had far-reaching effects on them and their families' economic situation. Rachel Alsop critically examines the processes behind women's changing relationship to the labor market in eastern Germany following the collapse of state socialism and the transition to a market economy. By the 1980s women made up virtually half of the East German work force. The collapse of the GDR transformed the field of work, drastically diminishing the general demand for labor. Yet while economic and political restructuring reduced the volume of both male and female employment, it was women who bore the brunt of unemployment. In the immediate transitional period a re-masculinization of the workforce was evident, with women constituting the large part of the unemployed. Using an extensive range of both quantitative and qualitative data, the author explores the gender dynamics of the social, economic, and political restructuring of eastern Germany, thereby producing an important new context in which to examine contemporary debates on gender and work.

This book was released on 2002-01-22 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the findings of the extensive research progrannne funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Council) and entitled 'Technological Change and Regional Development in Europe'. The goal of this programme was to carry out research by means of empirical surveys into the relationship between technological change and regional development. Over a period of six years, a total of 50 research projects have been undertaken in three phases, each lasting two years. This research programme has succeeded in actively involving leading German regional scientists from many universities as well as non-university research institutions. In addition, numerous research projects were carried out in close co-operation with internationally renowned partners. We should like to express our gratitude for the support provided by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. Without their financial backing of the research programme, it would not have been possible to undertake such an ambitious project. Thanks also go to the contributors of this volume for their willingness to participate in our joint project. We wish in addition to acknowledge the contribution of Prof. Dr. Philip Cooke whose refereeing of the chapters has enhanced the quality of the work presented here. Finally, our thanks go to Angela Spence for her expert editorial assistance, linguistic editing and the preparation of the Index, and also Franco Vaio for taking care of the technical aspects and production of the final copy. Their combined efforts have been crucial for successfully bringing together contributions from so many different authors in a single volume.

Book Synopsis Network Dynamics in Emerging Regions of Europe by : David A. Dyker
Download or read book Network Dynamics in Emerging Regions of Europe written by David A. Dyker and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2010 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important book focuses on post-Lisbon Agenda issues of alignment and misalignment on different dimensions of European society and the European economy, including industrial systems, R&D systems, educational systems and job markets. It also looks in particular at the peripheral regions of Europe ? the less developed parts of ?old? Europe, the parts of old Europe that are outside or only half-inside the EU, the new member-states of the EU, and Turkey as the most important EU candidate country. It takes as its methodological starting point the theory of network alignment as developed in SPRU, notably by Nick von Tunzelmann, and builds on this to produce an incisive assessment of the institutions, individual actors and markets that drive the knowledge economy. In all of this, it sets the European picture firmly in the context of global developments in investment, labour and intellectual property flows. Key authors include the editor himself, von Tunzelmann, Andrea Salavetz of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and Matija Rojec of the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia.
