Book Synopsis The Man Sitting in the Corridor by : Marguerite Duras
Download or read book The Man Sitting in the Corridor written by Marguerite Duras and published by Foxrock Books. This book was released on 1991 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By one of the world1s most acclaimed writers and author of The Lover One of France1s leading literary figures, Marguerite Duras casts a brooding, elegant spell over her readers with her acute portrayals of love: its aphrodisiacal powers and its sweet, inevitable pain. This novella is haunting, erotic, and tragic, with the distinctive evocation that is Duras1 own. 3Ms. Duras1 1980 novella, The Man Sitting in the Corridor, whose superb translation by Barbara Bray is only now appearing, was Š an exercise in the author1s progressive distillation of her prose. Thus unencumbered, the rare bits of writing gain resonance, like a lone voice echoing through a tunnel. Moreover, by writing less‹and thereby suggesting more‹Ms. Duras invests her information with a power unavailable to more copious, if still evocative, forms of literary expression.2 - from The New York Times Book Review

If you haven't discovered her, please do give her books a try. You won't be disappointed, except for not having found her sooner!” “I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I couldn't put it down. Book Synopsis Literature, Ethics, and Decolonization in Postwar France by : Daniel Just
Download or read book Literature, Ethics, and Decolonization in Postwar France written by Daniel Just and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-02-09 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Against the background of intellectual and political debates in France during the 1950s and 1960s, Daniel Just examines literary narratives and works of literary criticism arguing that these texts are more politically engaged than they may initially appear. As writings by Roland Barthes, Maurice Blanchot, Albert Camus, and Marguerite Duras show, seemingly disengaged literary principles - such as blankness, minimalism, silence, and indeterminateness - can be deployed to a number of potent political and ethical ends. At the time the main focus of this activism was the escalation of violence in colonial Algeria. The poetics formulated by these writers suggests that blankness, weakness, and withdrawal from action are not symptoms of impotence and political escapism in the face of historical events, but deliberate literary strategies aimed to neutralize the drive to dominate others that characterized the colonial project.

Book excerpt: A gripping literary thriller from an exciting new voice in fiction Hailed as 'one to watch' by the UK's Telegraph, Sam Taylor is one of the most imaginative and innovative young writers at work today. With The Amnesiac, his United States debut, he incorporates a murder mystery and a forgotten manuscript into an exhilarating and intelligent novel. When twenty-nine-year-old James Purdew returns to England from his home in Amsterdam, it is to discover what happened during three earlier years of his life that he cannot recall. What he finds, in an old house with a tragic history, is a nineteenth-century manuscript that begins to seem less and less like a work of fiction-and more like the key to his own lost past. Memory and amnesia, fiction and reality, destiny and randomness, heaven and hell-all converge to form an engrossing gothic story that is sure to appeal to fans of Carlos Ruiz Zafon's The Shadow of the Wind.

Book Synopsis Violence on Television by : Barrie Gunter
Download or read book Violence on Television written by Barrie Gunter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Television is often accused of showing too much violence. However, it is rare that anyone stops to ask what this statement means. Violence on Television provides an objective analysis of the violence on television, how much there is and what form it takes. It presents findings from the largest ever sudy of the depiction of violence on television carried out in Britain, funded by the British Broadcasting Corporation and the Independent Television Commission. As well as presenting a quantitative analysis of the amount of violence on television, this research places great emphasis on investigating the character of violent portrayals and the contexts in which they occur. Barrie Gunter and Jackie Harrison present a detailed literature review, which examines previous research from around the world. They then explain the methodology and look at the problems of measuring and quantifying violence on television. They examine the specific attributes of violence, including the form it takes, its physical setting, its motives and consequences, and the nature of the characters involved as either aggressors or victims. They also examine the amount and nature of violent portrayals in different programme genres, such as films and drama, entertainment programming, news and factual programmes, and children's programmes. The book will be of interest to students and researchers in psychology, communication studies and media studies.
