Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2015 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Genres, grade: 1,3, Free University of Berlin (Institut für englische Philologie), course: Ekphrasis: Theory and Practice, language: English, abstract: This essay examines the confrontation of the male gaze with female self-determination in ekphrastic poetry, using the poem Standing Female Nude by Carol Ann Duffy as an example. The main aim of the essay is to show how ekphrasis and its specific features serve as a space in which gender conflicts are debated in the realm of aesthetics and how the emergence of a “distinctive female ekphrastic mode” (Kennedy 2012: 90) led to a shift from masculine dominance towards female power in the genre. In a first step, a definition of ekphrasis will be given and we will argue the case for why certain characteristics make ekphrasis particularly suitable for exhibiting the male gaze. Subsequently, in a second step, we will demonstrate to what extent female writers have modified the conventions of ekphrasis and challenged its traditional gender relations to suit their own need for self-determination. Carol Ann Duffy’s poem Standing Female Nude (1985) will serve as an example for feminist ekphrasis.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The process of shaping cultural identity in colonial Spanish America has occurred as much through the medium of pictures as through the medium of writing. Focused on writing that references visual texts (ekphrasis), Visions of Empire in Colonial Spanish American Ekphrastic Writing examined the way words about pictures in the writing of three Spanish American Creoles negotiate the challenges that confronted the ruling elite in Spanish America during the contentious period between the Conquest and Independence.
Book Synopsis Getting the Picture by : Margaret Helen Persin
Download or read book Getting the Picture written by Margaret Helen Persin and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes a probing look at how Spanish poets of the twentieth century read objects of visual art, write poems that utilize the discursive strategy known as ekphrasis, and how, in turn, they are read by those texts. As a result of their reading practices, the artistic works "read" by the poets are inscribed in the poets' own texts, and in a variety of ways. This analysis sheds light on the poets' own distinctive stance toward many primary issues, such as textuality, representation, language, power, ideology, literature, and art.

Within it are also some of her best-known poems, including 'Education for Leisure', as well as, of course, the poem from which the collection takes its title. First published in 1985 to widespread critical acclaim, Standing Female Nude is a work of startling originality and the starting point of the Poet Laureate's dazzling poetic career.
Book Synopsis The female/male gaze and its cultural consumption by : Anke Werckmeister
Download or read book The female/male gaze and its cultural consumption written by Anke Werckmeister and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2012-10-15 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject American Studies - Miscellaneous, grade: 2,0, Free University of Berlin (John F. Kennedy Institut für Nordamerikastudien), course: Framing Reality, language: English, abstract: The study of film has been going on for several decades. During this time, the focus has been, especially in the 1970s, on looking (the gaze) and the spectator in general. Here in this paper I would like to look at the female also a bit on male gaze in connection with the movies Network and Blow Up. This means I will also consider film theory of the 1970s and 1980s but I want to focus my insight on contemporary spectatorship. To do this, I will also give a short overview of historical findings and important authors and their theses and how their theses would work in this day and age. However, my intention is to argue that Laura Mulvey’s thesis that the male gaze focuses on female objects only is partly outdated and that she left the female as a passive spectator, which is not true, because nowadays females are more active than males in terms of identification with their favourite stars on the screen. That identification can take on different levels starting with admiration because of looks, talent or taking them as role models which will furthermore end in consumption; may it be fashion, cosmetics or hairstyles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What precisely, W. J. T. Mitchell asks, are pictures (and theories of pictures) doing now, in the late twentieth century, when the power of the visual is said to be greater than ever before, and the "pictorial turn" supplants the "linguistic turn" in the study of culture? This book by one of America's leading theorists of visual representation offers a rich account of the interplay between the visible and the readable across culture, from literature to visual art to the mass media.
Download or read book In the Frame written by Jane Hedley and published by University of Delaware Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of In the Frame is poetic ekphrasis: poems whose starting point or source of inspiration is a work of visual art. The authors of these sixteen essays, several of whom are poets as well as critics, have a twofold purpose: calling attention to the contribution women poets have made to this important genre of poetic writing and re-thinking ekphrastic poetry's motives and purposes. From Marianne Moore and Elizabeth Bishop to Mary Jo Salter, C. D. Wright, and Susan Wheeler, many of our best women poets have done important work in this genre, and when they describe, confront, or speak for an image that is itself wordless, their motives are not only formal but aesthetic. Their poems also raise important questions, from a perspective that is often, but not always, gender-inflected about how art is made and displayed, experienced and valued, celebrated and commodified. Jane Hedley is K. Laurence Stapleton Professor of English at Bryn Mawr College. Willard Spiegelman is the Hughes Professor of English at Southern Methodist University, and editor-in-chief of the Southwest Review. Nick Halpem is an associate professor in the English Department at North Carolina State University.
Book Synopsis Museum of Words by : James A. W. Heffernan
Download or read book Museum of Words written by James A. W. Heffernan and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2004-04 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ekphrasis is the art of describing works of art, the verbal representation of visual representation. Profoundly ambivalent, ekphrastic poetry celebrates the power of the silent image even as it tries to circumscribe that power with the authority of the word. Over the ages its practitioners have created a museum of words about real and imaginary paintings and sculptures. In the first book ever to explore this museum, James Heffernan argues that ekphrasis stages a battle for mastery between the image and the word. Moving from the epics of Homer, Virgil, and Dante to contemporary American poetry, this book treats the history of struggle between rival systems of representation. Readable and well illustrated, this study of how poets have represented painting and sculpture is a major contribution to our understanding of the relation between the arts.
Book Synopsis Gertrude Stein and Cubist Poetry - Her Response to a Male Tradition by : Manü Mohr
Download or read book Gertrude Stein and Cubist Poetry - Her Response to a Male Tradition written by Manü Mohr and published by . This book was released on 2013-08 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2011 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,5, University of Stuttgart, language: English, abstract: You will write if you will write without thinking of the result in terms of a result, but think of the writing in terms of discovery, which is to say that creation must take place between the pen and the paper, not before in a thought or afterwards in a recasting... It will come if it is there and if you will let it come. (Gertrude Stein) Gertrude Stein has been an extraordinary person in many respects: it is not only her biographical background that is impressing and which shows what a strong and self-confident woman she was, such as her foundation of the American Fund for French Wounded during the First World War. Also by her work Tender Buttons, written in 1914, she has successfully created an entirely new kind of literature. Yet her playful, but at the same time not immediately understandable way of writing is considered as hermetic, being pretty difficult to read. This is why Sprigge writes that "[b]oth as artist and as woman Gertrude Stein has always been a subject of controversy. Ridiculed on the one hand she is acclaimed on the other as the creator of a literary style that has set its mark in twentiethcentury prose and poetry..." (xiii). This style has largely been influenced by cubist painting and her friendship with Pablo Picasso. Tender Buttons is thus of course an homage to him, and there are many similarities between cubism and Stein's writing. However, it is the aim of this essay to point out both in what way the art movement contributed to her work, and how she is at the same time able to overcome this male tradition by stepping away and changing it.
Book Synopsis The Concept of a Female Genius by : Renate Enderlin
Download or read book The Concept of a Female Genius written by Renate Enderlin and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2010-12 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject Philosophy - Practical (Ethics, Aesthetics, Culture, Nature, Right, ...), grade: 1,0, University of Vienna (Philosophie), course: Feministische sthetik, language: English, abstract: In the following paper I am going to present Christine Battersby's text Gender and Genius, her methodes and goals, occuring critics and problems. The main problem is the question: Do we need the concept of a female genius? After Battersby's historical research about the concept of the male genius in history (especially in the history of art and literature) she points out, that she wants to invent a new concept of genius. After her demonstration that genius had definitly a clear male connotation, she doest't want to skip the notion genius but she wants to redefine it. She wants to invent the concept of a female genius. In paragraphe 2 I am going to point out some results of Battersby's work, that show why women were excluded for such a long time from any form of art production. In paragraphe 3 I try to explain with Battersby how and why women accepted this exclusion sometimes and how they tried to resist and to fight back this kind of misogyny. Paragraphe 4 should answer the question why Battersby's new concept of genius is called a female genius, while paragraphe 5 wants to bring in some arguments against the separation and categorization into female/feminine and male/masculine concept. The last paragraphe contains also a very short conclusion and my own point of view.
Book Synopsis A Sunless Heart by : Edith Johnstone
Download or read book A Sunless Heart written by Edith Johnstone and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2008-06-12 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In A Sunless Heart, Edith Johnstone establishes a feverish atmosphere for her novel’s story of emotional and physical hardship and the power of bonds between women. Its first third focuses on Gasparine O’Neill, who shares an intense connection with her sickly twin brother, Gaspar. Living in poverty, the two struggle to live decently until Gaspar dies. Here gritty naturalism gives way to fantasy, as Gasparine is rescued from despair by the brilliant Lotus Grace, a much-admired teacher at the local Ladies’ College. Sexually exploited from the age of twelve by her sister’s fiancé, Lotus cannot love anyone, not even her illegitimate child. Gasparine devotes herself to Lotus, but Lotus finds her final brief happiness with a woman student, Mona Lefcadio, a passionate Trinidadian heiress. Exploring issues of race, sexuality, and class in compelling prose, A Sunless Heart is a startling re-discovery from the late-Victorian era. The appendices to this Broadview edition provide contemporary documents that illuminate the tension between romantic friendship and lesbian consciousness in the novel and address other debates in which the novel participates: the nature of Creole identity, the education of women, and the dangers of childhood sexual exploitation.

Book Synopsis Visualizing the Poetry of Statius by : Christopher Chinn
Download or read book Visualizing the Poetry of Statius written by Christopher Chinn and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-01 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholars have long noted the strikingly visual aspects of Statius’ poetry. This book advances our understanding of how these visual aspects work through intertextual analysis. In the Thebaid, for instance, Statius repeatedly presents “visual narratives” in the form of linked descriptive (or ekphrastic) passages. These narratives are subject to multiple forms visual interpretation inflected by the intertextual background. Similarly, the Achilleid activates particularly Roman conceptions of masculinity through repeated evocations of Achilles’ blush. The Silvae offer a diversity of modes of viewing that evoke Roman conceptions of gender and class.
Book Synopsis The Paradox of Being Female – Is there a Feeling of Belonging Together? by : Christina Gieseler

This book was released on 2010-04-12 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2007 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, Hawai'i Pacific University, course: 20th Century Women Writers of Color, language: English, abstract: Being female constitutes a kind of paradox. On the one hand, women constitute one group, one category because of their sex. On the other hand, the belonging to this group does not always mean that women have anything more in common than their sex. Genny Lim’s poem “Wonder Woman” shows how the category of being female is divided in itself by other master statuses that not all women share, and it reveals that one’s sex is not an issue which make humans necessarily stick together. On the basis of Rosenblum’s and Travis’ work The Meaning of Difference: American Constructions of Race, Sex and Gender, Social Class and Sexual Orientation, this paper will focus on the way in which Genny Lim’s poem illustrates the construction of the “category of women”, and how concepts such as “Dichotomization”, “Othering”, “Aggregation”and “Double Consciousness” come into play when the poem’s lyrical speaker ponders about and also criticizes the differences and similarities that she finds in women.

This book was released on 2010-10 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2003 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, University of Potsdam, course: Genre and Gender, language: English, abstract: History has always been a space of male deeds, male achievements, male gain or loss. Or so one is made to believe in retrospection. Of course women were not absent from history but they certainly are to a great extent from historical representations. Patriarchy dominated Western culture for more than two thousand years and supplied the framework for what is to be known and how, i.e. in which contexts, it is to be known. Historical material has always been scarce but in regard to women it is almost non-existent. So women rightfully started to ask where their part in history was or why they have been consequently written out of history instead of being included. A necessity arose to deconstruct certain historical "truths" and to make women visible in and show their relevance to our past to build up strength and to obtain a voice or rather voices in order to question the present and the past systems. In this paper I examine Carol Ann Duffy's The World's Wife, whose poetry runs very much in above line. I will concentrate on the gender constructions established within The World's Wife. Even though Duffy questions traditional conceptions of men and women and their relationships with each other, she maintains a binary gender structure. The first chapter therefore deals with a general overview of gender conceptions constructed in and through the poems. The second and third chapter will take a closer look at certain poems. I think the poems weave their own web of femininity. In a circular movement they refer to past and future thus describing a female/feminist tradition. Accordingly the first and the last poem, Little Red Cap and Demeter, form the outline of the circle, not only in regard to their position but also by implicitly refering to each other. My third chapter will extend the
