Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Making of the American Nation: A Book for American Boys and Girls To the works of original research that'the author men tioned in the former'volumes are to be added others which give fresh studies of particular portions of the period here under discussion. In wading through the record of the war of parties and the bloody stories of civil strife, the author has endeavored to free his mind from all party bias, his only wish being to keep himself true to that idea of an American Nation which filled the mind of the Father of his Country. If our sons and daughters can be educated to have a proper appreciation of their country without arrogance, and a regard for other nations without cringing obsequiousness, we may feel that we are in a fair way to bring up a nation that will be strong and respected. Book excerpt: Long respected for its lush narrative and balanced coverage, A Short History of The American Nation uses political history as the framework for an engaging discussion of social, economic, and cultural developments in this country. Numerous anecdotes, new biographical portraits (new American Lives essays), and extensive quotations help give students a closer view of the major figures and events on the American historical stage. Mark Carnes joins John Garraty in preparing the Eighth Edition of A Short History of The American Nation. Selected by Garraty, Mark Carnes' scholarly specialization in cultural and social issues, especially gender, complements Garraty's specialty in politics and the economy. In the new edition of this bestseller, every chapter has been reviewed and updated with a substantially rewritten Chapter 1, a new, final Chapter 33, "Crimes and Misdemeanors," and reorganized Chapters 29 - 32. New material on women has been added throughout the book. The new, four-color format of the Eighth Edition enhances the value of the map program. Many more photographs have been added, making the book more visually compelling and accessible. New captions emphasize how illustrations interpret the past.

Stella has been there before and knows all the sea's secrets, but Sam has many questions. "Does a catfish purr? Does a sea horse gallop?" Stella has an answer for them all. The only thing she isn’t sure of, and neither are we, is whether Sam will ever come into the water. Exquisite watercolors bring a day at the beach alive in this perfect summer story. Gently humorous, Stella, Star of the Sea also captures the special relationship between a young girl and her baby brother — a responsibility that can be both lots of fun and very trying.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Discovery and Exploration of America: A Book for American Boys and Girls No branch of the work of education seems to the author of greater importance than this of giving the young their first impressions of the history of their own land. With a deep sense of this truth, the latest authorities have been made tributary to this volume, and the author has spared no pains to have it correct in every statement of facts, and in the difficult matter of dates. The work is a study of authorities, under the lead of such writers as those who have contributed to Mr. Winsor's invaluable Narrative and Critical History of America, and of those whose works are mentioned in the very extensive notes appended to its different chapters. For other author ities the Library of Harvard College has furnished ample resources, and they have been extensively used. Among the works especially valuable for the period covered by this volume are the narratives of the early navigators, found in the publications of the Hakluyt Society and else where. The young are not qualified to investigate these books, but they contain much that is of great interest to them. The more difficult words are explained at the close of the volume. The author limits the list in the hope that the young reader may not be discouraged by it, and he trusts that teachers will cultivate in them the habit of consulting dictionaries and other works of reference. Such a habit is of great importance, for no book contains all that may be well said on any subject. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
