Book excerpt: Excerpt from School History of South Carolina In preparing this little School History of South Carolina the Author has enjoyed the usual assistance of those who have previously written on the same subject; and has suffered the usual perplexities of confused and conflicting authorities and inaccuracies. The usual authorities are Rivers, Ramsay, Simms, Hewit, Logan, Carroll, Johnson, Moultrie, Glenn, Drayton, Archdale, Laudonniere, Hilton, Adair, Lawson, De Laet, Grahame, Oldmixon, Holmes, Weems, Bancroft, and Tarleton; besides a score of others. The State-Paper Office in London, too, is full of materials not yet thoroughly digested. Besides this the Author has little to say. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historic Houses of South Carolina If South Carolina is to be judged by the aphorism that A State is the product of its people, then this little section of land, which has stood for so much that is admirable, is indeed a great State. Little as it is known, South Carolina, geographically isolated in her early days, left to work out her own destiny in the following days of the development until the Revolutionary days surrounded by enemies on all sides (except to the Northward), has not only held its own but has led the Southeast in many agricultural, manufacturing and mining pursuits, led the Union in the yield per acre of corn, oats and cotton, and stands second in cotton manufacturing in the entire Union. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of South Carolina Since William Gilmore Simms gave his history of the State to the public, the researches of historians have brought to light many new facts about South Carolina's stirring past. In consequence, the editor has been obliged to make numer ous changes in many places in the original text to bring it into accord with views accepted comparatively recently but of unquestioned soundness. Other changes have seemed desirable and have been made in the interests of clarity of style and simplicity of diction: The editor trusts that these deviations from the text have not marred its graphic force nor sacrificed its virile interest. These observations were printed in the early part of 1903. Since that publication, 'five years ago, there have been momentous changes in the industrial and social world. The cotton mills of South Carolina have prospered as have the people of this great State. Again The News and Courier has asked me to visit and report upon the conditions of the cotton mills. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Charleston, South Carolina Let us see What this annual increase would 'do for one City on the seaboard, should it get the whole of it. It would give it ten trains of. Forty cars, each car carrying ten tons of freight, every day, for three hundred days, or tons each day, and would require four vessels of one thousand tons every day to remove it. Is not this a prize worth striving for? Shall Charleston remain inactive while every other City and port on the Atlantic and Gulf is making the most strenuous efforts to obtain it? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Charlotte: North Carolina Charlotte. N. C., the county seat of Mecklenburg, is not the largest town in the United States, and it has not reached that-- point where it cannot grow and show improvement in many lines. But there are so many features of excellence and superiority, that to those who are seeking a home, a place of business for an established enterprise, or a place in which to organize a new industrial undertaking, Charlotte offers unusual opportunities. This city is not a place where a man with no means can make an independent fortune without effort, nor is it a place where capital can make such returns as are offered and never realized in sections more widely advertised. Within the past three years, the growth of Charlotte has kept pace with that of other cities of this section of the United States, and at this time the population is about 50,000. This figure is under the average estimate of those who are in a position to know the facts, but it is the intention of this publication to be ultra-conservative rather than to stretch a single point a hairsbreadth. At the taking of the last United States Census, the population was a little less than 35,000, and since that time the growth has been about the same as for several years before. While the city has grown in point of numbers, her development along business lines has been greater, if possible, and within the past five years the commerce of Charlotte has shown a greater increase than any city in the Southeast. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jones South Caroliniana: Out of Interest in the History of South Carolina The South Carolina Society has heretofore made no use of this easy method of telling its story, and with the ex ception of a brief sketch of the society in the last edition of its rules, and the account of its Centennial celebration, of which only one copy seems to be in existence, there has been no such source of information at the use of its mem bers. Now we all full well know that it is easier to listen to the result of the research of others that to search and gather for ourselves, and thus for every hundred of the mem bers of other societies who hear of the past of their associa tions, probably not ten of our own good comrades are even aware of the contents of our records. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of North Carolina IN the year 1700, when people ocked from all parts of the christian world, to see the solemnity Of the grand jubilee at Rome, my intention at that time being to travel, I accidentally met with a gentleman, who had been abroad, and was very well acquainted with the ways of living in both Indies; of whom having made inquiry concern ing them, he assured me that Carolina was the best country I could go to; and, that there then lay a ship in the Thames in which I might have my passage. I laid hold on this Opportunity, and was not long on board, before we fell down the river and sailed to Cowes; where, having taken in some passengers, we proceeded on our voyage, 'till we sprung a leak, and were forced into the Islands of Scilly. Here we spent about ten days in refitting. In which time we had a great deal of diversion in fishing and shooting on those rocky islands. The inhabitants were very courteous and civil, especially the governor, to whose good company and favor, we were very much obliged. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of North Carolina I have the usual to offer for the publication of this little volume. It will sufficiently appear, by both the matter and the style, that it was not originally intended to assume this shape. When my friend Mr. Hope first solicited me to write something for his journal, I consented only on condition that he would accept such papers as I might be able to prepare in the midst of the wearisome and unending duties which devolve upon a country lawyer. He was pleased to say that he preferred such spontaneous productions to more studied and elaborate essays, as being better adapted to the columns of a daily newspaper. Thus encouraged I began the task, selecting, naturally and almost instinctively, North Carolina as my theme. The sketches were written under most unfavorable circumstances; many were penciled off at night after a fatiguing day of labor in the court-house, and others whilst on the circuit, without books of reference, and sent immediately off to the editor. My professional brethren, at least, will appreciate the tread-mill existence from which they sprang. After a few numbers were published, Mr. Hope surprised me very much by copyrighting the series, and informing me of his wish to publish in book form. To this I yielded reluctantly. I was conscious of their defects, of their careless manner of preparation, of their scattered and disconnected order; and yet worse, I did not have leisure to rewrite, correct, or add to them. Still I yielded to Mr. Hopes wish, and although the success of the enterprise is of course entirely problematical, I do not, and shall not regret the attempt.
