Book excerpt: Gorgeous, feel-good debut of one woman's journey from rags to bitches... When Jo Hill lands a job as a PA at GLOSS magazine, she thinks it's the job of her dreams. But it soon turns into a nightmare. As a mousy secretary with a penchant for giant bags of Maltesers and comfy shoes, Jo doesn't exactly fit in at the uber-chic office. Her boss humiliates her; her colleagues bitch about her; even the receptionist ignores her. At first, Jo's not sure why - is it her hair, her figure, her clothes? Then she realises it's pretty much all of the above and that she'll never be like the sleek, glamorous girls flitting round the office in their Sass & Bide jeans and Gucci mules. Or will she? Jo might be overweight and overlooked, but she's different in other ways too. She's bright, ambitious and smart, and what's more, she has a plan. Reduced to tears for the umpteenth time by her boss - the gorgeous but vicious magazine publisher Joshua Garnet - Jo knows it's time for drastic action. She's had it with magazines and knows that 'discovering a whole new you' takes more than a manicure and a new MAC blusher. Jo's going to give herself the ultimate makeover and by the time she's finished, the magazine world - and Joshua - won't know what's hit them. Goodbye Jo, hello Mia - magazine diva extraordinaire.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost two decades after the Vietnam War, most Americans remain convinced that U.S. prisoners are still being held captive in Southeast Asia, and many even accuse the government of concealing their existence. But as H. Bruce Franklin demonstrates in his startling investigation, there is no plausible basis for the belief in live POWs. Through scrupulous research, he shows for the first time how this illusion was fabricated and then converted into a powerful myth. Franklin reveals that in 1969 the Nixon administration, aided by militant pro-war forces, manufactured the POW/MIA issue to deflect attention from American atrocities in Vietnam, to undermine the burgeoning anti-war movement, and to stymie the Paris peace talks, resulting in the prolongation of the Vietnam War for another four years. Successive administrations, in an effort to mobilize public support for their continued economic and political warfare against Vietnam, asserted the possibility of live POWs at great emotional cost to both family members of the missing and countless Americans distressed about the fate of those supposedly left behind in Indochina. Born of political expediency, the POW/MIA issue was transformed in the 1980s into a potent myth. American culture was transfigured as movies and novels designed to reimage the Vietnam War turned the imagined post-war POWs into crucial symbols of betrayed American manhood and honor. Finally the myth began to turn against its creators when many Americans became convinced that the government itself was conspiring to betray the missing men. As he traces the evolution of the POW/MIA myth, Franklin not only exposes it as an elaborate hoax at the highest levels of government, butalso explains why the myth has penetrated to the heart of American life. By confronting the "true tragedy of the missing in Vietnam", Franklin helps us to understand how to heal the terrible psychological and spiritual wounds of the Vietnam War.

Book excerpt: A groundbreaking and always controversial musician, M.I.A. is an influential artist and an important cultural figure of the last decade. Here is a documentation of her entire visual output and a telling of her story in collages, photos, and prints from her early years in art school at Central Saint Martins London through to her hugely successful three albums, mixtapes, and live performances at PS1 MoMA, Coachella, various exhibitions, installations, and music video shoots. The artwork is comprised of a wide variety of materials and media: video stills turned to stencils pieced back together to make animated installations; spray-painted canvasses scanned then made into digital collages; photographs videotaped, then run through bad computer connections to create graphic prints; artwork on nails, walls, prints for T-shirts, handmade stage costumes—anything she could find while she was touring. Also included are assorted lyrics and portions of an exclusive interview in which she discusses candidly the personal events and themes which informed her art and music at the time of each campaign. Includes foreword by Steve Loveridge, friend since her art school days and frequent creative collaborator with M.I.A.

Then a terrifying reality sets in: her daughter is missing. Days earlier, Estelle discovered her baby’s crib empty in their Brooklyn apartment. Frustrated and unable to explain her daughter’s disappearance, Estelle begins a desperate search. But when the lack of evidence casts doubt on her story, Estelle becomes the number one suspect in the eyes of the police and the media. As hope of reuniting with Mia becomes all she has left, Estelle will do anything to find answers: What has she done to her baby? And what has someone else done to her?

Book excerpt: A heart-expanding novel about four Latinx teens who make New Year’s resolutions for one another—and the whirlwind of a year that follows. Fans of Erika L. Sánchez and Emery Lord will fall for this story of friendship, identity, and the struggle of finding yourself when all you want is to start over. From hiking trips to four-person birthday parties to never-ending group texts, Jess, Lee, Ryan, and Nora have always been inseparable. But now with senior year on the horizon, they’ve been growing apart. And so, as always, Jess makes a plan. Reinstating their usual tradition of making resolutions together on New Year’s Eve, Jess adds a new twist: instead of making their own resolutions, the four friends assign them to one another—dares like kiss someone you know is wrong for you, find your calling outside your mom’s Puerto Rican restaurant, finally learn Spanish, and say yes to everything. But as the year unfolds, Jess, Lee, Ryan, and Nora each test the bonds that hold them together. And amid first loves, heartbreaks, and life-changing decisions, beginning again is never as simple as it seems.

Book excerpt: In 2014, Mia Love made history by becoming the first black Republican woman elected to Congress, and she accomplished this feat in Utah. The story of how she did it begins in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, during the reign of "Papa Doc" Duvalier, one of the world's most reviled dictators. It continues in suburban Connecticut, where she reveled in musical theater. And after her conversion to Mormonism it shifts to Utah, where a political awakening led her first to the city council in Saratoga Springs and then the halls of Congress. In this political biography, Salt Lake Tribune reporters Matt Canham, Robert Gehrke and Thomas Burr explore the defining moments in her life, illuminated through dozens of interviews with Mia, her family, those closest to her and those critical of her. She's dynamic, comfortable in the spotlight, and if you're interested in politics, you're likely to see a lot of her in the years to come. But Mia's political success wasn't preordained.During her first congressional campaign, she was forced to replace key staff members, spent too much time campaigning for GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney, and her polls were flawed. Still, she lost to a well-known Democratic incumbent by three tenths of one percent. In less than two months, she returned to the campaign trail and marched to victory. She'll take the oath of office in January 2015, joining a House Republican caucus that wants to increase its appeal to minorities and women. Mia Love says she aims to be front and center in Washington, representing her state and her party, as the next GOP star.

Book excerpt: Nineteen and Mia begins where the story in The GREEN HOUSE near Loveville ends and carries it forward with the main characters Morgan, Christy, Catherine, Ray, Jamison and Robot 19. Excitement builds when Robot 19 gets captured on the California Coast by North Korean commandos. Concern increases when he is sent to North Korea for interrogation and exploratory disassembly. While detained Nineteen unintentionally kills a guard, escapes, and finds his way onto an old cargo ship bound for the Mediterranean Sea. Once his ship gets through the Suez Canal and ties up for major repairs and maintenance at a shipyard in Port Said, Nineteen gets off and finds employment with a circus and becomes its star performer earning enough money to build a "superaEUR"charged" hot air balloon and sets sail for North America hoping to warn Jamison at Robot Headquarters in Loveville of a Doomsday attack by the North Koreans. In route to North America, Nineteen receives communion from the Pope, meets Mia on a small island populated exclusively by women, commandeers a small jet in Gambino (formerly known as Cuba) to shorten the time needed to get to Robot Headquarters. Shortening the time didn't matter, however, because thirty ballistic missiles armed with nuclear warheads had already left their silos.
