Download or read book Making of Luke-Acts, The written by Henry J. Cadbury and published by Baker Academic. This book was released on 1999-03-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hailed as groundbreaking when it was published in 1927, this classic volume remains a significant contribution to the study of Luke-Acts. Cadbury's examination of authorial intent based on linguistic and stylistic considerations; form-critical perspective; and comparison between Luke and other ancient writers offers scholars and laypeople alike a unique view of Luke's literary style and method. Henry J. Cadbury's analysis of the making of Luke-Acts is organized around four principal factors that affected that final form: the materials that were accessible to the author; the language and genre in which the author was writing; the author's own individual personality, often expressed unconsciously; and the author's conscious purpose in composition. The Making of Luke-Acts was first published in 1927 and has remained a mainstay in Lucan studies ever since. This edition includes a new introduction by Paul Anderson, George Fox University "The following pages aim to recover some features of [the character of the third evangelist], to visualize the other factors which went into his noteworthy undertaking, to illustrate from his contemporaries the methods of composition that he employed, and so to give as clear, comprehensive and realistic a picture as possible of the whole literary process that produced Luke and Acts."--from the preface

Book Synopsis John the Baptist as a Rewritten Figure in Luke-Acts by : Christina Michelsen Chauchot
Download or read book John the Baptist as a Rewritten Figure in Luke-Acts written by Christina Michelsen Chauchot and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-03-14 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John the Baptist as a Rewritten Figure in Luke-Acts compares the Gospel of Luke’s account of John’s ministry with those of Matthew, Mark, and John to make the case for the hypertextual relationship between the synoptic gospels. The book is divided into three parts. Part I situates the Gospel of Luke within the broader context of biblical rewritings and makes the general case that a rewriting strategy can be detected in Luke, while Parts II and III combined offer a more detailed and specific argument for Luke’s refiguring of the public ministry of John the Baptist through the use of omitted, new, adapted, and reserved material. While the "two source hypothesis" typically presupposes the independence of Luke and Matthew in their rewritings of Mark and Q, Chauchot argues that Luke was heavily reliant on Matthew as suggested by the "L/M hypothesis". Approaching the Baptist figure in the synoptic gospels from a literary-critical perspective, Chauchot examines "test cases" of detailed comparative analysis between them to argue that the Gospel of Luke makes thematic changes upon John the Baptist and is best characterized as a highly creative reshaping of Matthew and Mark. Making a contribution to current research in the field of New Testament exegesis, the book is key reading for students, scholars, and clergy interested in New Testament hermeneutics and Gospel writing.

Book Synopsis Actualité de la pensée médiévale. Recueil d’articles. by : Joseph Verheyden
Download or read book Actualité de la pensée médiévale. Recueil d’articles. written by Joseph Verheyden and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 1999 with total page 876 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the papers presented at the 47th Colloquium Biblicum Lovaniense (Leuven, 1998). The general theme of the meeting was the unity of the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles. Main papers on this topic were read by R.L. Brawley, J. Delobel, A. Denaux, J.A. Fitzmeyer, F.W. Horn, J. Kremer, A. Lindemann, O. Mainville, D. Marguerat, F. Neirynck, W. Radl, M. Rese, J. Taylor, C.M. Tuckett, and J. Verheyden. While a large majority of scholars agree that Luke intended his work to cover both the past and the continuing history of Jesus (Gospel and Acts), the essays also illustrate the complexities of this view on the unity of Luke-Acts when it comes to interpret the various aspects of Lukan theology, christology, pneumatology, and ecclesiology, the expansion of the Church in light of its Jewish origins, the genre of Luke-Acts, and the literary and stylistic means Luke used to make his work a unity. In total the volume includes some 40 papers, of which 24 are offered papers: L. Alexander, H. Baarlink, M. Bachmann, D. Bechard, T.L. Brodie, G.P. Carras, A. del Agua, C. Focant, G. Geiger, B.J. Koet, V. Koperski, D.P. Moessner, G. Oegema, J. Pichler, E. Plumacher, A. Puig i Tarrech, U. Schmid, B. Schwank, N. Taylor, P.J. Tomson, S. Van den Eynde, S. Walton, G. Wasserberg, F. Wilk. This collection is an invaluable contribution to current discussions in Lukan study and to a nuanced understanding of the relationship between Luke's two volumes.
Book Synopsis The Book of Acts in History by : Henry J. Cadbury

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With this book a foremost New Testament scholar makes a signal contribution to the literature about the times of the first apostles. This period, when the memory of Jesus was fresh yet no written literature about him existed, lends itself well to the descriptive treatment Dr. Cadbury employs. The purpose of these pages, he writes, is to establish not so much the accuracy of the book of Acts as the reality of the scenes and customs and mentality which it reflects.... We can walk where the Apostle Paul walked, see what he saw, and become increasingly at home in his world.Five chapters deal with each of the five cultural strands then existing: Roman, Greek, Jewish, Christian, and cosmopolitan. The sixth attempts to reconstruct the earliest history of the book of Acts.

Download or read book Luke-Acts written by Donald Juel and published by Epworth Press. This book was released on 2012-10-16 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new study is intended as a first introduction to the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles, those two New Testament books which are so closely connected. Rather than getting caught up in the vast and complex discussions which have produced a vast scholarly literature, the author concentrates on interpretative questions which are connected with Luke-Acts as a whole. Why did the author of the Gospel, unlike other evangelists, choose to create a larger framework within which to interpret Jesus' ministry? What difference does it make to our interpretation of the Gospel and Acts that one follows the other? What themes distinguish and/or unite the two parts of Luke's history? Is the unified work of a different genre from either taken individuaily? Ore of the strong points of the book is the way in which it sees Luke-Acts against the general cultural background of its time and conveniently quotes passages from secular authors which illustrate Luke's approach and way of working.

Book Synopsis Prophetic Jesus, Prophetic Church by : Luke Timothy Johnson
Download or read book Prophetic Jesus, Prophetic Church written by Luke Timothy Johnson and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2011-09-12 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christians chronically and desperately need prophecy, says award winning biblical scholar Luke Timothy Johnson. In this and every age, the church needs the bold proclamation of God's transforming vision to challenge its very human tendency toward expediency and self interest -- to jolt it into new insight and energy. For Johnson, the New Testament books Luke and Acts provide that much-needed jolt to conventional wisdom. To read Luke-Acts as a literary unit, he says, is to uncover a startling prophetic vision of Jesus and the church -- one that imagines a reality very different from the one humans would construct on their own. Johnson identifies in Luke's writings an ongoing call for today's church, grounded in the prophetic ministry of Jesus Christ, to embody and enact God's vision for the world--from publisher's website.
Book Synopsis The Reception of Luke and Acts in the Period Before Irenaeus by : Andrew F. Gregory
Download or read book The Reception of Luke and Acts in the Period Before Irenaeus written by Andrew F. Gregory and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2003 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "When and how may Christians first be shown to have used the Gospel of Luke and its companion volume, The Acts of the Apostles? Andrew Gregory offers the first book-length discussion of the reception of Luke and of Acts in the period before Irenaeus. The research project which was the basis of this monograph was originally conceived as a comparison of the pneumatology of Luke-Acts with the pneumatologies presented in Christian literature of the second century. Recent scholarship on Lukan pneumatology is agreed that Luke has a particular interest in the Spirit, but it is divided as to whether his pneumatology is part of a homogenous early Christian understanding or a distinctive presentation that is to be sharply differentiated from that of Matthew and Mark, of John, and of Paul. Noting a lacuna identified by Turner, the author set out to originally ask two questions. First, whether it might be possible to identify in second century pneumatologies any characteristics that New Testament scholars might label as distinctively Lukan. Second, whether such characteristics might be sufficient to indicate not only the influence of Lukan pneumatology but also a conscious appropriation of distinctively Lukan theology by other early Christians. Contents include: Introduction and methodology, Previous research, The evidence of the earliest manuscripts and notices, Do narrative outlines of episodes in the life of Jesus presuppose Luke?, Collections of the sayings of Jesus, Marcion, Justin Martyr, The reception of Luke in the Second Century, The reception of Acts in the Second Century, Early and Ambiguous Evidence, Justin Martyr, Narrative accounts explicitly concerning the Post-resurrection teaching of Jesus and the activity of Apostles and other prominent figures, The reception of Acts in the Period before Irenaeus, The reception of Luke and Acts in the Period before Irenaeus."
