Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I want to turn up one of those seasonal roads which lead off of M-119 fronted by rectangular white signs warning that the roads are not plowed in winter. I could drive far enough off the main road that no one would see us when we stop. You might not even ask why I am doing it. In The Mackinac Bridge Wrote Me a Letter Hills glimpses into life vary from humorous to poignant to fanciful to observational. Topics include a drive on M-119 through the Tunnel of Trees, a hawks posture, mouse coffee, the last swim of the year, and the opening of deer season. Hill also reminisces about watching Johnny Green and the Michigan State Spartans play the Indiana Hoosiers at the old IU Fieldhouse. Hill recalls wondering if he would meet another Frank Hill and he revisits canoeing across the Straits of Mackinac to impress a girlfriend his first summer on Mackinac Island. Hill even admits to some of his nighttime dreams, thereby lending credence to his wifes claim that he may not be as normal as pumpkin pie.

Designed to provoke thought and discussion about Michigan’s past, the documents in this reader are expressions of past ideas, markers of change, and windows into the lives of the people who lived during well-known events in Michigan history.

Book Synopsis Deconstructing Dr. Strangelove by : Sean M. Maloney
Download or read book Deconstructing Dr. Strangelove written by Sean M. Maloney and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2020-07-01 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: King of the Cold War crisis film, Dr. Strangelove became a cultural touchstone from the moment of its release in 1964. The duck-and-cover generation saw it as a satire on nuclear issues and Cold War thinking. Subsequent generations, removed from the film’s historical moment, came to view it as a quasi-documentary about an unfathomable secret world. Sean M. Maloney uses Dr. Strangelove and other genre classics like Fail Safe and The Bedford Incident to investigate a curious pop cultural contradiction. Nuclear crisis films repeatedly portrayed the failures of the Cold War’s deterrent system. Yet the system worked. What does this inconsistency tell us about the genre? What does it tell us about the deterrent system, for that matter? Blending film analysis with Cold War history, Maloney looks at how the celluloid crises stack up against reality—or at least as much of reality as we can reconstruct from these films with confidence. The result is a daring intellectual foray that casts new light on Dr. Strangelove, one of the Cold War era’s defining films.

Book Synopsis History of the Ottawa and Chippewa Indians of Michigan by : Andrew J. Blackbird
Download or read book History of the Ottawa and Chippewa Indians of Michigan written by Andrew J. Blackbird and published by Ypsilanti, Mich. : Ypsilantian Job Printing House. This book was released on 1887 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blackbird (Mack-e-te-be-nessy) was an Ottawa chief's son who served as an official interpreter for the U.S. government and later as a postmaster while remaining active in Native American affairs as a teacher, advisor on diplomatic issues, lecturer and temperance advocate. In this work he describes how he became knowledgeable about both Native American and white cultural traditions and chronicles his struggles to achieve two years of higher education at the Ypsilanti State Normal School. He also deals with the history of many native peoples throughout the Michigan region (especially the Mackinac Straits), combining information on political, military, and diplomatic matters with legends, personal reminiscences, and a discussion of comparative beliefs and values, and offering insights into the ways that increasing contact between Indians and whites were changing native lifeways. He especially emphasizes traditional hunting, fishing, sugaring, and trapping practices and the seasonal tasks of daily living. Ottawa traditions, according to the author, recall their earlier home on Canada's Ottawa River and how they were deliberately infected by smallpox by the English Canadians after allying themselves with the French. Blackbird finds Biblical parallels with Ottawa and Chippewa accounts of a great flood and a fish which ingests and expels a celebrated prophet. He includes his own oratorical "Lamentation" on white treatment of the Ottawas, twenty-one moral commandments of the Ottawa and Chippewa, the Ten Commandments and other religious material in the Ottawa and Chippewa language, and a grammar of that language. Henry Rowe Schoolcraft appears in the narrative in his role as an Indian agent.
